In the episode "Green Apples." (Poetry inspired, Neil and Christy’s scene on the school steps where Neil says, "Because it wasn't me.") A FULL HEART The night was still and quiet Soft music could be heard They sat there in the darkness But neither said a word. Both felt quite exhausted From the sickness they had seen But all that Neil could think of Was how foolish he had been. His heart had leapt when she had come To visit him that day He’d wondered what her reason was For smiling in that way. For she had looked so beautiful And he had been impressed By her enchanting presence And her charming friendliness. He’d had the pleasure of a dance They’d waltzed there in the sun She’d said he needed someone And he knew she was the one But Christy, he discovered Wasn’t thinking of romance But hoped she could convince him To give Dan Scott a chance. He’d felt so angry at himself To think that he had dared To hope at last she’d come to see How much he truly cared. And so he had lashed out at her When Scarlet Fever came Accusing her of carelessness As if she were to blame. He knew that he had hurt her And he wished that he had not But he resented her compassion And concern for Daniel Scott. He wanted to explain himself To share with her his heart But the fact he was a married man Was tearing him apart. Then she spoke first and told him Of the fear she held inside And the guilt which would engulf her If any children died. At once he reassured her That she’d done nothing wrong He’d only been upset because His feelings were so strong. And then he shared his soul with her So she at last would see “I was angry that you cared for him Because it wasn’t me.” But Christy, though her heart was full Knew not what she should say And so, she sat there silently As he just walked away.
