Margaret has made her 1st appearance, and David has proposed marriage to Christy. Chapter One Sissel's thoughts With a tinge of sadness, yet with a new revelation in her heart, Sissel boarded the El Pano train en route to Boston. What all happened in these last few days, she reflected, looking ut the window. Thoughts formed and swirled in her mind as the train departed the station. The run-down barn that now served as a postal station was now disappearing from view. I thought I knew who I wanted to spend my life with, thought I knew what life expected of me. I thought, I thought, I thought!, she wearily reasoned within herself. Always a well-favored and sought after girl, she had travelled that well-worn road of tea parties, and social gatherings that were often required to get her in places and situations that she could not hope to enter herself. In the last few days, she had met an inspiring young woman who seemed to veer from that path and off into appealing, yet unknown territory. She was going to make a difference! Sissel had never lacked assistance of any kind, and had come to accept it as normal. The fair-haired young Cecily never lacked for the creature comforts due to her parents' station in life. She had been called "sissy", being the youngest of four sisters. Eventually, as she matured into a young lady, that name graduated to "Sissel". "A catch for any man", her mother crowed to her friends, as she noted that her daughter was of marrying age. Her ash-blond tresses that framed her oval face, her blue-green eyes, her taste in fashion, and her medium height made it difficult for men, yes everyone else, not to notice her. Her mind reverted back to that young teacher. David had told her in no uncertain terms that "one day soon" they would announce their engagement! Sissel was perplexed, as she saw the futility of where a permanent attachment to David would eventually come to mean. Life in Cutter Gap?! Her? She shuddered at the thought. One part of her told her NO , and another part showed her that her feelings for David had been stronger than she previously shared with any man. Still, those feelings proved to be on shaky ground. What happened to him these last 3 years after seminary school? She sensed that David found Christy's independence from family appealing , since he could never break away from his . His escape from domineering parents propelled him into a field that was not his first choice, but that forced David to maybe "grow up some more". Sissel's mind came on another vision-the piano in the mission house on that sunny, summer afternoon. "You remind me of home", Christy told her with feeling. She cared enough to leave a necessary chore to help Sissel verbalize her realizations. Although the cove was beautiful, she could not envision life there. If home was so appealing, why be here? How could she call this place home? What am I lacking now? Sissel could not help but compare herself, which was a weakness on her part. She so wanted to measure to everyone's expectations ! She knew one thing for certain: she WOULD go to the conservatory of music in Boston. Maybe she would find herself there. She could sing. As much as she wanted to be taken care of , and be spared the difficult things in life, she yearned for more. Singing? She thought so......She turned her thoughts towards the lovely summer scene played before her, as her locks blew in the welcome summer breeze. A relaxed expression replaced the troubled one as the train rolled northeast towards Boston. Note: What a lovely troubled young lady!! Stay tuned to the Christy channel nearest you. ************************************************************ Chapter 2 She was gone. David had eqgerly anticipated her visit, although it was short notice. Both of them understood that what they enjoyed was friendship, almost a sibling affection throughout the years. His mind, however, was decided about Christy. Where was she? As his mind drifted toward the lovely young woman, he realized how anxious he was to be alone with her. Out of his reverie, and glancing at his timepiece, he knew that dinner was imminent. He made his way from the pond upwards towards the mission house, hoping to connect with her there. To his chagrin, he noticed that she was nowhere in sight! "Is Christy running late? I didn't see her in the schoolhouse earlier", he asked, peering around the dining area. Ruby Mae emerged from tending some pans over the wood stove. The heat generated, in addition to the summer heat, made the kitchen air stifling to breathe. Not one lonely breeze in sight to cool things down! "Oh, Preacher, she be at the McHones' on count of Iris' very first birthday, just a supposin it be today, since they don't knowed for sure. It be all the same, don't ya think?" Ruby Mae chattered, eager to share this exciting news. She bustled noisely around the kitchen. "Oh", David acknowledged, a hint of disappointment in his voice. Dinner passed quietly, no doubt, since things became back to "normal" since Sissel's departure. Alice and Ruby Mae seemed very tired. Possum! Again! David sighed, but was grateful for the plentiful apple slices with it. Ida used to fix frequent apple offerings, such as pies, pancakes, applesauce with lots of cinnamon! David suddenly missed her. She and Clarence had somehow managed to form a happy union and life in the California valley tending their fruit orchards. Clarence would have found Ida wherever she lived,he thought. Love found a way, seeping into two lonely souls, quickening and deepening their lives. These mountains! With Ida gone, and Christy's increased involvement with the cove's people, he felt like a fish out of water. At least someone in my family is married! If Ida was here, she would be here to serve...me, and help...me. Funny, that you don't regard your sisters as grown women with needs of their own! David's thoughts were darting here and there, and he knew it, but didn't care. He rose and headed for the door, running a hand through his dark hair. "I'm going to reinspect the new planks in the schoolhouse to make sure they're nailed properly", he announced to no one in particular. He really had no need to observe the platform and steps. Since Christy was occupied for the evening, he felt a need to fill his time. Where was she??!! He impatiently asked himself. I thought she would want to be alone with me like I want to be with her right now! I thought she would be home by now, at least she could have told me. He sulked, leaning against one of the beams, observing the starry sky. Reluctantly, he pulled his thoughts away from Christy and turned them almost obligingly towards Sissel. Sissel. He could not remember a time where she had not been an important ally in his life! In the 3 years he had been assigned to Cutter Gap, she wholeheartedly supported him in his ideals to relocate to the remote mountain community. She had known all along that idea was not entirely his own. In her sweet, perfumed letters, she fondly addressed him as "Dearest David". FLASHBACK "Bring her with you...Boston would love Miss Christy!", Sissel enthused. end of FLASHBACK Yes, he thought, Christy would be loved anywhere. And why not in Boston with me?!I have vacation time coming. It's true that Christy had taken a short trip to Asheville when school was over. But for something as important as our FUTURE together, surely she could take another trip! At least, HE wouldn't be around to confuse her! he reasoned. He pondered his earlier proposal to her. She said that she was not ready to marry. He did not interpret her answer as a denial, although her hesitation caught him off guard. As he looked upward, he prayed, "God, help me do the right things so I can win Christy's love. I need her to be my wife! With her by my side, I can be an effective minister here, or in Boston. People would come to me through her. She would be the perfect wife, as we could serve you together. Amen" He grew uneasy as he knew his tolerance for the residents was limited. These are the people you serve!, he rationalized. Yet, after a few false starts, Chrisy had slowly been embraced and loved by them. A slow, yet complete acceptance was evident. It bothered him that she regarded them as "family". He thought surely the mission was her "family"! "Recognize the need, meet the need", he been taught at seminary. There are servers and recipients of that service. The cove consisted of people that David thought he served, although there were times he questioned God's approval of his decision-making. Gazing into the night, he heard the drone of cicadas in the summer night as he meandered towards his bunkhouse. Sissel reminded him of home. Note: It seems one of the cove's local heroes is having some doubts and false hopes! Stay tuned for scenes from an all-new Christy episode. That's what we'd REALLY like to hear, huh! Chapter 3 David and Christy have an "engaging" conversation "You look flushed, Christy", Alice observed. "Is thee well?" "I'll be fine once I have something to eat," she managed to reply. Christy had so enjoyed her visit that she had no dinner. The McHones' barely had enough for themselves these days, and she knew she could wait. Christy welcomed the food brought before her. It was suprisingly good! Alice had assisted Ruby Mae with a fine meal of fried chicken, sweet potatoes, some root vegetables, and berry cobbler. A meal fit for royalty! "Miss Alice, that was the best cobbler I ever et!" Ruby Mae was not shy when it came to eating. "Thee gets half the credit, child, since we worked together" Alice smiled at her. "As time allows, I will be happy to help to broaden thy skills". Christy helped herself to another helping of chicken. "Sounds wonderful, maybe I can help, however I can. I know my cooking can also be broadened a few ranges!" she admitted. "Oh Miss Christy, you always tryin to do good to everbody! I'd surely like that!" Ruby Mae glowed. "It always make me feel good to hear powerful nice things. Makes me want to holp even more, ya just see if I don't! Ruby Mae basked in the glow of well-earned praise. Alice and Ruby Mae carried Christy's dishes to the kitchen. "Need anymore help?" Christy called . "I think we have everything in order. Thank thee regardless" was Alice's reply. Christy started to leave, but David met her at the door. "Meet me by the pond in 10 minutes? I want to talk to you about something". David spoke in earnest, his brown eyes never leaving her face. "I'm really tired tonight, David", Christy yawned, trying in vain to escape from being alone with him. He grew insistent, and turned her so she faced him. "We won't be long, I promise". The sky had been cloudy all day, so with the evening's approach, it seemed much later than 6:00. The trees around the pond rustled as they were stirred by a breeze. For a moment, they both were lost in thought as they watched little ripples skim the water's surface. "Christy, David cleared his throat, "it's about Sissel. I'm sure you girls discussed something that may be of interest to me?" "She's a lovely girl, David, and it's obvious to everyone that she cares a great deal about you" Christy replied honestly. "As I do her--but, uh, that's not the same as love, uh, now is it." David sputtered his words out, more of a statement than a question He stood very near to Christy, and put his hands on her small shoulders. "I always seem to get tongue-tied looking into those blue eyes of yours", he stated, hoping for an appropriate response he sought! When she remained silent, he ventured on. "Tell me, weren't you a little....jealous...that day at the mission?'' "Jealous? Well, I know she must have had her eyes opened here, but she's really a sweet person" David and Christy strolled slowly. He stopped walking, and took her hand. "You're very understanding, and have a good heart. That's one of the things I love about you. He pressed his hand to his lips. Not knowing where this line of talk was going, Christy teased him. "You mean, something else besides my eyes and hair have caught your attention?" "I told you before, I notice everything about you. But I need you to know that in time, some things change, and some don't. Sissel and I have known each other since we were 12 years old!" "Seems that if you know someone that long, you have the makings of being more than friends" Christy fingered a sleeve button thoughtfully. "I assure you, it's only friendship!" David exclaimed . "I would have thought she wanted more!" Christy clarified herself, getting puzzled over his aroused emotions. David stood directly in front of her, tilting her chin so she would look in his eyes. "Were you jealous?" he whispered. "Me? Well, no--I mean, she was wanting all of your attention! Even when you were supposed to be teaching Bible class, and a few chores, AND the children....she was like a shadow!" Christy struggled to find words, as she looked away. "And why not?" David wheeled her back to face him. "What else was she going to do?" She felt her temper rising, as she tried to control its onslaught. "She would not help me with a simple chore! I know she was your guest, but it's not like I asked her to do much of anything. I'm sorry, please don't misunderstand me." Christy put her hand on his shoulder as if to console him, seeing the frustrated look on his face. "Sissel's a dear, once I had a little time to talk to her. This place is not for everyone. She really wants a singing career. She'll be wonderful, sighed Christy, thinking of the girl's melodius voice. "I know she will!" Christy was emphatic. David was running a finger along one of his black suspenders. This was not going like he planned! "The reason I'm bringing this up, ....is...." he groped for words. "We've reached crossroads in our lives pointing us in different directions. Even if we did have romantic feelings, where could they have led us?" "I think whatever is between you and Sissel is your private affair". Christy thought before she answered. What was he trying to provoke? Pitting one woman against another seemed like such a childish sport in a man. A seemingly good woman, too. "What are you trying to tell me? All this talk about Sissel. She could not be alone for more than 5 minutes! I don't think she trusted me when I told her that the bathouse was safe!" she was getting agitated with this. " And what is wrong with being needed?" David was shouting now. "I know what it's like to be needed , but this really was...." Her fatigue was interfering with her normal sensibilities. She could not put a word to it. "Why are we arguing?" David was frantic, trying to search for answers to his unanswered questions. "I d on't know!" Christy's final words, before she hastily speeded towards the sancturary of the mission door. He stared after her, still angry and puzzled . He walked over into the gazebo and began to pray. "God, I have to show her she is worthy of the pedestal she deserves to placed upon. I must make her understand! Why don't you answer me?" Silence seemed to answer him, as he walked toward his bunkhouse. Note: Was this a lover's quarrel? Beggin' to differ with you ma'am(or sir)! What is making this guy tick anyway. Will David get another chance with Christy? Stayed glued to this channel!!!! CHAPTER 4 Christy has some reflections of her own Fall was a favorite time of the year for Christy. An artist could not adequately capture the golds, oranges, reds, browns and crimsons that formed a kaleidescope ofcolor in these mountains. Her heart skipped a beat as she reflected on her students' latest accomplishments. Rob showed such promise as a writer, and Zady had expressed her desire to become a nurse and help people. Zady was a little "special", although Christy knew she must regard all of her students' abilities and weaknesses. To continually recognize this was a skill that Christy developed. " There was something else that Zady said that set Christy thinking. "I want to be a nurse and holp folks, just like you and the doc!" What a wonderful combination, she thought affectionately. When school was over, the children gleefully headed in all directions towards their homes. Christy paused by the schoolhouse door, taking in the effect of a smoky haze settling over the Smokies. The sky was turning grey, and the thin layer of haze made some of the mountain peaks look transparent. Creed Allen had specified what career choice he did not desire! "I'm not going to be no preacher, no ma'am" They don't never have no fun in life!" There were a few snickers and whispers at this remark. Christy shook her head, smiling. She did'nt know if Creed was joshin' or serious! To fulfill the mission request for dispensary supplies, she volunteered to go to the doctor's cabin after school. She saddled her new horse, Buttons, {named for Mountie}, and galloped down the hill. As she disappeared into the valley, David emerged from the stepladder. He had finished applying sealant to some of the mission's windows in order to block the wind's chill these days. Hmm. he thought, Christy is travelling this route a little too often! His mind was filled with distaste, jealousy, fear and confusion. The good doctor had been to the mission frequently up until the time his wife had "returned from the dead". It was not always for medical concerns either! Neil McNeill had become almost an "unofficial" part of the mission! Alice stated simply that God was at work in his life, although David's short- sightedness thought it was merely because of Christy. Neil's wife Margaret and her sudden appearance stirred up a variety of unpleasant emotions.: anger, betrayal, deception, and disappointment. Hurt was an unsuspected feeling, which had etched its way into Christy's heart. She had been quieter these days. David didn't understand, although he silently rejoiced at seeing Neil's wife. She was not unattractive! Why had she come if not to stay with her family? How could she leave as quickly as she had come? David was versed in Bible scriptures regarding marriage, divorce, and reconciliation. Had her visit been a waste of time? And what about my life with Christy? There were no answers to his questions. Note: Just 3 words: David doesn't understand!! Sneak preview: Christy has a suprising visit with Neil! Chapter 5 Christy and Neil have a suprise meeting In an attempt to find solace for his jangled nerves and blurred memories, Neil stood fishing. Today, he didn't catch anything. A cool, pleasant breeze stirred its way into the boughs and branches of the trees at the waters edge. He glanced up at the sky which now was a myriad of purple, gold, and grey as the day marked its beginning descent. " What a peaceful moment this should be, yet I am troubled! God, if you are really there, help my mind somehow" he thought. flashback His mind took him to the mission a little over 1 year ago, when Christy had been hurt in the schoolhouse fire, caused by a falling beam. David had informed him that she had gone against his wishes to retrieve that huge Bible. God's Holy Word. She had almost paid in terms of her life that day. As he contemplated the extent of her injuries, she displayed such a peaceful expression. She'd looked as though she were asleep. Neil had prayed then, and it appeared that his prayer had been answered! "It can't be this easy", he thought. We highlanders regard our god as harsh and unforgiving, which is why life is what it is!" end of flashback He didn't know what he admired more: her beauty or her fierce dedication to his people. He decided the latter of the two, although it was a tough call! He continued to fish silently, as if his mind was absent from the whole affair. Solitude. It could be the greatest healing balm, or the greatest mental torture. His growing feelings for Christy frustrated and confused him. He'd picked up his mother's Bible and read in Romans: "for what I do is not the good I want to do, no the evil I do not want to do--this I keep doing!" (Romans 7:19) Now there were 2 women in his life! He heard the approaching gallops of a horse and gazed at its rider. Oh, how he longed to hold her, to kiss her, to tell his true feelings! Christy dismounted and led Buttons to the river to get a long drink. "We are in need of some cold and chest remedies to keep us stocked for the coming winter. We haven't seen you in almost 4 days! Is anything wrong?" she queried, trying to read his face for clues. "Wrong? Of course not, Miss Huddleston! My wife returns only to agitate me and play on my feelings, whatever ones were remaining, if any! I'm fine, I assure you!" Neil was needing an outlet for his storming emotions. "Neil, I don't really understand what happened, but I want to! If you could just open up sometimes to someone, you might feel better! Talking really does help! Christy was frustrated again, in a vain attempt to reach him. Neil threw down his pole and glared at her. In a soft, hurting and barely audible voice, he then whispered. "Not just anyone, Christy". She cautiously came closer to him. "I was trying to understand why you acted the way you did when she left. You put on your phonograph when I last came to check on you. You...you....", Christy searched for words. "Check on me?! I only wanted to dance with you, to take my mind off things" he grew defensive.. "Or is this something too frivolous for a missionary girl like you?" he challenged. Christy's mouth flew wide open in disbelief. "Certainly not! You know better than to say that to me! I don't know what has gotten into you lately! I could not dance with you in the state you put yourself in". "What state?" "Obviously you were drinking! I was not going to entertain whatever thoughts you were having!" she cried. Neil glowered at her and spoke very deliberately. "If I wanted to be entertained, I know where I could go, if not for my time restraints!" His face now wore a dark, enigmatic expression. A flood of emotion overcame her. "Neil, you should be ashamed to speak to me that way! My motives were never less than honest and good when it came to you. We're friends, how can you say such things?" Christy realized how hurt and angry she felt. She gathered the reins of Buttons and started to mount her. A huge hand roughly tugged at her shoulder, causing her to face him. He fought a terrible, wild impulse to kiss her. He quickly released her, seeing the pointlessness of this desire. Christy was now able to sit in her horse's saddle. "You need....you need....." she choked , as she fled from him. What a way to leave Neil! He watched her leave, and put his head in his hands, feeling totally worthless, unloved, and defeated. Chapter 6 Hours later, the sharp throb in his brain was also a painful reminder for his previous behavior. He'd had a rather blurry recollection of Christy coming on a mission errand for medical supplies. Supplies! Both of them had entirely forgotten about them! "What was I thinking? About teahouses no less! I haven't seen the insides of one since Margaret." It continued to be a terrible association for him. What will she think of me now? Heavy-hearted, he contemplated his next move. ------------------------------------ At the mission, Christy had aided Ruby Mae in preparing dinner. Anything to keep her mind off a certain doctor! This was not unnoticed by Alice. She had been observing David and Christy, who seemed more preoccupied and troubled. Christy's emotions could be stirred up so easily, so Alice made a vow to venture to the nearby mountain communities for day trips only. She thought it would be best. "I must beg her forgiveness, oh, how I need a friend!" Neil sighed deeply as he rode Charlie towards the mission. Storm clouds were reinforcing their intent, and the winds were stronger. He knocked on the door. Alice answered it and greeted him cordially. "Good evening, Neil, how may we help you?" "Is Christy here?" He was very direct. "She retired early this evening", Alice replied. He thought for a minute, then handed her a note. "See that she gets this. I'll be in Lyleton tomorrow. Here are some more cold remedies." He wasted no time with words. "She looked at the envelope and looked up inquiringly. "Is thee well, Neil? Thee seems troubled". "I'll be fine, and thanks" was the court reply. She walked towards Christy's room and slipped it under her door. ---------------------------- She opened her white shutters to reveal another glorious sunrise for her private view of the mountains. The wafts of red-orange clouds held promise that rain was bound to make an appearance later. She breathed in the autumn chill, inhaling the smoke from the fireplace, the fallen leaves and the damp earth. It was good to be alive! she thought with rapture. Her peace and feelings of joy were replaced by uneasiness and confusion as she recalled the exchange a few days ago by the river. She began to dress and pin up her hair, when she noticed the white envelope on her bureau. The contents read: My dear Christy, I apologize for my bad behavior at the river. It was wrong of me. Due to recent events, I hardly know what to make of things. There are yet no answers to my questions. Please forgive me. Neil McNeill A piece of Neil's armor had been shattered, exposing the confused soul within. Like Opal had divulged a previous courtship with Bird's Eye, she had been able to pierce through it to reach the normally reticent mountain man with an important point. Christy forgave Neil, but a new dull ache as she thought of him would not disappear, although she willed it to. Would Margaret be back? Surely she and Neil should attempt reconciliation. Marriage was a lifetime commitment, she'd told the older girls at school. I'm often confused about him anyway! She shooed away those thoughts as if she were swatting at cobwebs in the schoolhouse rafters. Like cobwebs, she realized that they would likely return later. ----------------------------- By midmorning, a storm had begun to brew as the hardwoods began to swirl and shake. Everyone had lunch indoors at the schoolhouse, and were relieved when the rains abated. Right before Christy released her students for the day, the sky grew even darker than before. "It ain't over yet, right teacher?" Little Burl looked up. "I think everyone needs to get home before it rains again. Be careful going home!" Christy addressed her students. Fairlight made her way to the steps. "C'mon younguns, time we headed home. Christy, you comin'with me to Hattie's, seein' she be illin' and all? I got some teas from Swannie to help her feel better". "Yes, we should get there before it starts up again". Hastily, the two women and five children sped down the hill until they disappeared over the ridge. The wind was blowing even harder, and the women had to strain to hear each other, as they gathered the smaller children under their shawls. "We'd better stop at my home before we get to Hattie's! Tain't far now! Fairlight seemed out of breath as they reached the welcome sight of her home. They noticed the overflow of the river, and the creek that merged into it. Outside the cabin, the rains continued their merciless assault. The water contined to rise until the overflow inched its way towards the cabins closest to it. Besides hearing the rain beat down on the cabin, Christy leaned towards the door. She heard a girl's screams! "John, you stay here with the younguns. Christy and I are gonna see if we can holp" Fairlight instructed. Members of the Allen clan were perched at different crevices along the river's edge. They were looking for someone! "BESSIE"! cried the voices. Ruby Mae had been with her. She was now frantic, flailing her arms. "BESSIE! OMIGOSH OMIGOSH!" she screamed. Around the bend, Christy could dimly survey the rushing water. She looked closer. Something looked like dark flowing hair seemed jammed on one of the sharp boulders! "BESSIE!" Christy and Fairlight were calling. "I've got to get down there!" Christy was shouting at Fairlight. "Lordy, holp us!" Ruby Mae was gasping. "She's my bestest friend!" Bessie! It was the girl's hair. Christy stepped on the stones as Fairlight handed her a branch. Bessie grabbed the branch. "Ohhhh holp me please holp me!" her breathing was uneven. The branch was starting to break. "Miss Christy, I slipped and fell in" "Hold on!" Christy was leaning over as far as she could. As she was reaching over to her, the branch snapped in two! The momentum caused Christy to fall face first into the raging river. She was being washed down the river, bobbing up and down like an apple Ruby Mae strained to keep her teacher in sight. "Oh Lordy, first Bessie, now teacher!" Now there were two female figures being pushed along in the current. By now, Rob and Bob Allen were at the edge like sentinels, watching and waiting. Neil had arrived now, and was trying to stay in control, at seeing who was in danger. 'MISS CHRISTY! BESSIE!" hoarse voices were calling out, trying to shine like beacons of light. "Where's my Bessie?!" Kyle Coburn keep yelling over and over. Suddenly, a red paisley cloth piece appeared in the water. Neil remembered seeing that print dress at a singin' at the Spencers'. He remembered seeing Christy's lovely form in that dress, along with a new hat with rose colored flowers in it. He'd keenly observed the flush of her cheeks against that pretty material, as she'd caught him gazing at her! 'BESSIE! MISS CHRISTY! HOLP US SEE YA!" the chorus of voices grew louder still. Neil paddled wildly until he grabbed the material. It felt heavy to the touch. Could it be.....He felt light brown hair in his hand. A deep gash grazed her temple and chin, as she no doubt had hit her head on a rock. Christy was shaking uncontrollably, and started to babble nonsensical words. Neil held her close to him. "Oh, Christy, thank God! I'm here! Speak tome!" His emotions collided with his doctor's perspective. Now the Allen men were signalling Neil. "Come to our abode, we'll holp ya both!" A great commotion came from the Holcomb's cabin, where the creek broadened into the river. "We found Bessie. She grabbed a tree that felled in the water". Kyle was running. "Praise the Lord she's safe". Alice now came on the scene, and people were swarming around her. "Doc found Miss Christy, they be at the Allens'. Bessie and her pa be at the Holcombs'" Ruby Mae was grateful to see Alice. Alice scooped her up onto Goldie, and sped for the mission. "Child, I was looking for thee, and thank God you're safe!" Alice received a warm huge from the mountain girl as they rode to the mission for clothes for Christy and Alice's medical bag. A stop was necessary at Neil's cabin as well, since he needed clothes also. She learned Neil had dove into that water and would need medical attention as well. It was going to be a long night. Chapter 7 In the late autumn afternoon, Christy peered out her opened window, gazing at the bare trees. She had much to contemplate these days. David had proposed a second time, but this time, Neil had been present, which added to her confusion. flashback "Are you FINE? Keeping one man dangling, while having feelings for another?" Julia had probed. No, this was not "fine"! she admitted. To further complicate matters, Margaret had returned a second time also, and decided to take Christy up on her challenge to fight for her marriage. In these last few months, she knew that both McNeills were trying to find a workable solution to their situation. Her husband! Is it my girlish fancy to be jealous of women needing and wanting David or Neil? She remembered David and Sissel's embrace outside the mission for all to see. When Margaret was "working" at the teahouse, Christy felt a sudden sense of loss. She understood respect, loyalty and friendship. But love? How could she be sure of any of her feelings? If she was indeed in love with Neil, it was like love had come to a dead end, fruitless in its conquest. "You have to choose between us" David 's words echoed now. How could she? Neil was still married! Choosing David would be the safe, predictable and perhaps expected outcome. However, Ruby Mae had talked incessantly about the importance of doing things that "made your heart sing". Christy knew David did not have this effect! She did know he could be counted on "in a pinch", as Fairlight put it. Christy just wanted everyone to be happy! Margaret seemed so reclusive and self-absorbed, not wanting to associate with anyone else, not even her mother. Alice must be hurt terribly, Christy thought sadly. She could not even converse and debate with Neil, like before. She thought of his passionate nature that credited him, and also could be his undoing on occasions. He had been so gentle and capable when she had fallen in the creek, trying to "rescue" Bessie. His warmth had been comforting. "I could go to God's Fist and clear my head!" Christy thought. She resolved to go Saturday. She loved the cove's people, and she knew the value of solitude, and had no fear of it. Christy watched David mount Prince down below, and deliberately waited for him to leave before telling Alice of her decision. Why had David delayed his trip to Boston? Heavy-hearted, Christy headed for the kitchen for some fresh bread, cheese, honey, a few apples, and a small jug of water to keep body and soul together. "I'm going to God's Fist to clear my mind and get some direction, Miss Alice". "Adversity has its uses, seek faith and it will not steer you wrong" came her sage advice. "I just want what's right for everyone. I'm not sorry I turned down David's proposal. I know Neil and Margaret have to work things out. The three of you are family." Alice showed a pained expression. "She refuses to see me. Keep us in your prayers, Miss Huddleston". As Christy rode through the open field that led to her destination, a familiar scripture came to her mind. "As much as lies within you, live at peace with all men" --------------------- The air was getting colder, and a few snow flurries signalled winter's entrance. The sky was a dismal grey, and clouds hung like a shroud over the dark mountains. Neil and Margaret approached the mission in silence. "Well, we're here", Margaret remarked. "Don't be long, I want to leave as soon as possible". Alice, however, met them at the door. Neil handed a bag of more medical supplies to her. "We're leaving now and will be in Knoxville for more x-rays and a periodic evaluation. This mountain air is getting more bracing for her lungs, which have been weakened. The best place for her now is where she can have her progress monitored more regularly with x-rays. Jeb and Bogg are going to look after things at the cabin. These are more supplies for whoever needs them. I've been offered a job on a temporary basis, courtesy of my friend James Healy. Pleas give this note to Christy, it will explain our decision." Neil knew he could not bear to look upon Christy's face, not with Margaret present! He leaned closer to Alice. "I've made a decision to accept Jesus as my Savior. Please pray for Margaret, so she can know that same peace also." Alice clasped her hands to her chest with joy. "Praise God!" she exclaimed. "Dan will have Martin Ashby coming in from Asheville as a temporary primary physician. He will help Dan with any case that should and probably will arise. Thanks for everything". Neil concluded. "I'll see that Christy gets this." Alice put the envelope into a pocket. "Aren't you going to say goodbye?" Margaret nudged Neil, giving him a look that was almost innocent. He knew differently, however. "No, we need to leave now," Neil managed a smile. He turned to Alice. "Here's an address until we get a more permanent one. This is Aunt Cora's address." Alice walked out to face Margaret, giving her no choice except to look at her. "I'll continue to pray for thy recovery. God keep thee, my child." Margaret stiffly returned Alice's embrace. "Thank you mother", she said, occupied in her thoughts. They rode away into the forest without looking back. As they vanished from view, Alice caught sight of Christy, who had stepped out of the schoolhouse. From a distance, she saw the pained expression on the young teacher's face as she stifled sobs before returning inside. "Thy will be done", Alice closed her eyes and lifted a prayer to the One who would and could make everything work out in its way and in its time. As a mother, she would always side with her daughter's decision to make her marriage work with Neil, in spite of all of Margaret's faults and shortcomings. Alice's heart would still go out towards Christy who was like a daughter to her, who for the most part wanted nothing for herself. ---------------- "CLASS DISMISSED!" Christy announced to her class. Among whoops and hollers, the school was deserted in a matter of minutes. David hesistantly entered and walked slowly toward her. "Oh David, hi!" Christy looked up from her desk, where papers were spread out all over. He cleared his throat. "I know you refused me before, but I want you to consider what you may be throwing away. For the love of God and everyone concerned!" he grew passionate. For the love of God and everyone concerned? She felt baited, and was suddenly very tired. "David, I believe I did act as such. You have caused me to doubt my decisions in the past, and I'm not too suprised that you are not respecting this one either! I'm sorry I was the one who hurt you but I came here to teach school and to make a difference, not just walk away from here as someone's wife. If I'm not true to God and myself, how can I be true to anyone else?" David moved closer and attempted to take her hand in his. She resisted this attempt at intimacy. "Christy, he's GONE! But, I'm here!" he took her hand anyway. "I gave you my answer!" Christy started to walk across the room, putting distance between her and David. "You won't even try!" he accused. Christy was growing impatient, weary of this conversation. "I have tried. I won't....I can't!"she whispered. "I can understand the physical attraction. Is it because you can't have him?" David goaded. She put her hand to her mouth in horror. "David, I can't believe you would accuse me of that!" "You're wasting your life loving a man who's not around. Or at least you think you love him!" Christy's attempt to control her anger caused her to tremble at his insensitivity. "When I went to Asheville for the holidays, my friends and cousin showed me that love starts from the inside out. not with outward shows of affection, hoping to gain something deeper. I wanted to be needed, which I am, but also saw that Ineed someone too!" She paused. "Haven't you ever been friends with girls first, or have they been only girls on your calling card?" She was probing him now. "You can 't do anything about it!" He was insistent, knowing that she had established an invisble boundary, where he could not put his hands anywhere near her, or get too close to her. It made him angry! Christy walked past him tostand on the schoolhouse steps. "It's pointless to argue with you". David tried to move closer, but her look challenged him to stay where he was. "I delayed going to Boston for a reason. I wanted you to be that reason". His voice diminished to a pitiful whimper. Christy watched him awkwardly, then she gathered up her wits. "Ruby Mae says you are leaving within the week, and a certain Boston lady is waiting for you!" David reacted strongly. "That chatterbox! I could throttle her!" "We could hardly help overhearing her. We all know she is like the human telegraph!" Christy bantered with him. "You were never that serious about me, if you have made other plans to see other women!" Christy remarked sofly. David was found out, and he tried to cover it up! "I told you, Sissel Jorgensen is like a sister to me!" Christy brought the last closure. "And you, David, are like a brother to me. I have to go now!" After David closed his mouth, which was hanging open, he resolved what to do next. He had delayed his trip to Boston, as he told everyone there that she would be coming too! " What a presumptous fool I was!" he scolded himself. " I'll meet with St. Giles Presbyterian to see about a transfer, and I will see Sissel! If Christy wants to live among poverty, disease, hunger feuding and wants to pine for an older man, well....to each his own!" There, David verbalized his final opinion. " She doesn't want me, doesn't want the life that she is accustomed to, so I give up!" He retreated to his bunkhouse to seek sanctuary and ask God's blessings upon his plan. --------------- The cold silent winter drapery hung over the entire cove. It was snowing again. The short days and the long nights tried even the best of spirits! Respiratory ailments, influenza and the like were commonplace. The more serious illnesses and injuries Dan and Dr. Ashby tended to together. Dan had a bitter brush with exposure after his horse fell through thin ice on the river. Alice had been summoned by Jeb and Fairlight, so Dan stayed at their cabin while she tended to him. Days were routine with Christy at school, chores, lesson preparation, and church. It was went on inside her head inbetween those times that made her frustrated and depressed. Yearning to hear one bit of news about Neil and Margaret, she realized that Alice probably didn't know herself! It had been almost a month! Christy had gone to her room feeling tired after dinner. She lifted up the old mattress to retrieve again the small envelope. It read: Dear Christy, I am taking Margaret to Knoxville to have more x-rays and evaluations regarding her contined remission. I am accepting a temporary position on her account. I hate leaving the cove, but I have to do what is right as a doctor and as a man. Her health is fragile now, as the bracing mountain air is too harsh for her lungs. She surely would not survive the winter in Cutter Gap. I don't know how long we will remain in Knoxville, but it is God's hands. He is able to do what I cannot do for myself or Margaret. Science has always been my god, along with reason. Now, I am learning to trust God's arm more than my own flesh, and He surprises me all the time! This is a hard situation and I hope you understand why I could not say goodbye in person. If that made you sorry, then I humbly apologize. I am not at liberty to express anything further. I will always treasure your friendship, and I wish you everything in life that you are so deserving of. Your friend, Neil McNeill She fingered the handwriting. She marvelled at the acknowledgement of God in his letter! No doubt one lonely night, Neil had reached up to God. And God, in his infinite love, grace, mercy, and pardon, reached back down and had given him eternal life! She had been reading in Proverbs 3:5,6 that if we acknowledge God and trust in him, He will direct our paths! "Oh Lord," she prayed, "thank you for directing all the McNeills' steps, and for mine" Christy was glad Martin Asby was married-she did not need more male attention these days! This young, fair-haired doctor in his late 20's, had left his wife Julie and son Aaron in Asheville. He visited them on weekends, and to Christy's suprise, was not acquainted with anyone she knew! Aaron often needed medical care himself, due to a congenital heart valve defect. In spite of this, this blond ball of fire was all boy! She wished she could meet his family. Christy stayed busy teaching Mary Allen and Opal how to read. They'd meet at the Allens', since Bob wanted Mary home "tending to her family". Christy kept her students challenged with interesting school projects, and she was training the older students to assist the younger ones in the 3 R's. She was, as her father once put it mildly, "pleased with herself". Chapter 8 There must have been three feet of snow on the ground, but the sky remained blue. There were twenty children absent from school. Bird's Eye trudged through the snow, carrying his rifle, huffing along the way. He knocked on the mission door and Christy answered it. " Want y'all to know that Lundy be back to school tomorror" "Thank you, Mr. Taylor, I'm so glad he's doing better." Christy had been observing him a weeks now. Were David's words along with the mission's postion on moonshine finally taking effect? There had not been one incident lately with Bird's Eye's named linked to it. Lundy had not bullied anyone at school either. Christy did not know if she would ever feel at ease around Bird's Eye Taylor! Yet here he was, and she wanted to converse with him. "I've noticed that you and Lundy have been to church twice now." She remarked. "Yes'm, I'se changin my ways. Doc shore would be proud to know I aint been dizzified with shine for one whole month! Facts is, Lundy and me gots wimmen in Lufty Branch! He grinned. as he shared his news. "Truby for me, Caro-line fer Lundy. Truby's man got kilt in a fight,. and she be alone, since the summer! Her and her gal, me and Lundy." He was beside himself with pleasure. "Are they church-going women?" Christy asked, as if she couldn't guess! Women could either bring out the worst or best in men. "Yes'm, they are!" he affirmed. "Shore been a long time too. Found out Molly got some paper sighnin sayin she married some other fella!" He shook his head, and leaned closer to Christy. "Ya see, I knowed what it be like to have a woman run off on ya. If'n this good thing could happen to me, I knowed it could happen to ya. I heared the Doc got close to the Lord too! He had a woman run out on him too, and now they's gone....But the Lord will holp you too, jest wait an see! Hehehe!" She didn't know what to say! She was sure she blushed at the mention of the good doctor's name. And a Christian? She remembered Alice saying something about that! Bird's Eye turned to go. "Oh yea, y'all invited to my hitchin' in Lufty Branch, week after next. After church this Sunday, Miss Henderson gonnal fix us a gatherin so Truby and Caro-line can meet the folks. Then, we's going to live there, so I can get some honest work. The Lord done took away the thirst for firewater, I swar! Clean otta my blood! Aint wantin to hurt nobody no more! Got the Lord, got another chance with my boy, and now we got wimmen! Well, that's all teacher-lady". With amazement and thanksgiving, she watched him amble away, coughing a little. Another man's life had been touched by God, and he was restored mentally, physically, and spiritually. Bird's Eye was now a complete man, the way God intended him to be. The mountain man's prayers had been heard for a chance to right all his wrongs and he was not disappointed with the Lord's answer. Christy almost wished that they would stay in Cutter Gap, so she could get acqainted with the two ladies that won their hearts. To each his own, she thought. God must have laborers in Lufty Branch, to help them further along. Flashback ".......that would hardly be what Reverend Grantland and Alice Henderson would call Christianity in action", Neil's words came to her now, when over a year ago, he had challenged her belief system. Lundy was doing better in school, and Bird's Eye's contempt, anger and hunger for revenge at every opportunity had been erased away. Lundy was also helping Sam Houston, Creed and Little Burl as a mentor to them, ending a long-standing feud between the Allens and Taylors. Yes, this was Christianity in action! ------------------ She was standing on the railroad platform waiting for his arrival. He definitely was coming! She snuggled her hands in the red woolen mitt that matched her hat. It was a windy, clear, and cold day in Boston David's letter had her mind going every which way-just like these trains passing on all four tracks! Her lessons had been going very well, and she was ready for some local recitals. David would be here to witness one of them! Sissel was so happy she could burst! She looked up at the huge, antiqued railway clock. "Oh no," she thought,"it's been twenty minutes! I hope everything is OK" She started to fret, as she paced back and forth trying to keep warm. Sissel walked up the counter window. "Is train 54 on time, the one coming from Roanoke?" she asked. "Yes, there was a slight delay in Baltimore. Not to worry, miss." The old man with the grey moustache regarded her. "Oh, I probably worry more than I should! I can't help it!" she confessed. "A pretty miss like you? What can you possibly be worried about?" he kindly asked. "A man is coming home for a visit, and I really don't know where I stand with him." "Ahhhhhh, so that's it!" he nodded. "I'm sure you have nothing to be concerned about. You're a pretty one for sure!" She fluttered her eyelashed, taking in the compliment. "Thank you sir". She dropped her purse. "Oh my goodness!", Sissel looked around nervously, "I've lost my purse! Oh, why me, why today?" "I'm sorry I can't help you there", he said ruefully. "Is this yours?" Sissel turned around to see a auburn-haired woman wearing a fur coat, walking a black poodle. A huge gold necklace hung around her neck. "Oh thank you so much, madam!" Sissel was grateful. "You have no idea what kind of day I've had" "Well, I know someone who is very well acquainted with your situation, dear". Would you say that you have a relationship with Jesus?" "Well, I can't say! I certainly attend church. I thought that was possible for good people that did everything right, and I have tried to be good!" Sissel confessed to her. "God is so gracious that he gave salvation as a gift, that can't be earned. Then we have more power and strength to be of good to ourselves and to others around us. There is a peace that only He can give, that doesn't come from this world. I am married to an attorney, dear, but I can tell you, that is not what gives me joy! It comes from knowing God will never leave me in any situation, and that I have a very real help in time of need! When you marry, to have a man that truly believes also, is a wondrous thing. Then you both can be like-minded on decisions you make that you can be peaceful about. I din't mean to eavesdrop, but I heard you speak about this man you are concerned about". "He is a minister in a backwoods mission in Tennessee. I just want to do what is right. He is coming here with a fiancee. We've been friends for years, and he has tried to talk to me about God, but I couldn't understand it!" Sissel stated honestly. "God sees your heart, and if you trust in Him, and don't lean towards what you know in this situation, He will direct your paths. Do you believe that? Here, is a little book that will help you in your journey." As Sissel examined the small black book, a loud whooooshhhh indicated a train's entrance. "Train 54 from Roanoke!" the amplified voice rang out over the speaker. Sissel walked hastily in the train's direction, then paused, looking for that lively woman that encouraged her so. She had vanished into thin air! "I didn't even get her name or had a chance to thank her!" she realized. People seemed to be swishing by her in all directions and seemed to blur for a moment, as she focused on her words. A few moments later, Sissel found peace from an unexpected source. She was running toward the train, waving excitedly. 'DAVID!" she called out to him as his long, lanky frame exited the door. "SISSEL!" he came up, giving her a hearty embrace. She paused, looking around her. "David, where is she?!" Chapter 9 David had been rehearsing this moment on the train. "We're not getting married, I'm afraid. I was very presumptuous when you came to Cutter Gap over the summer. Let me get my bag and we can sit down and talk." "I'm sure you're tired from your journey, David. It can wait till later." Sissel was surprised at the peace she felt now. "No, I insist." David attempted to make his intention clear to her. "David dear, I have to rehearse tonight for the recital this week. We can talk later." "Forgive me, I'm being impatient, one of my faults!" David admitted. "I'd like to talk to you later. He paused, "is 7:00 soon enough?" "7:00 would be fine, David. I'll look forward to it. I'm sure we have lots to talk about!" Sissel enthused. "Later, Sissel dear", David kissed her cheek. She waited for the cab to take David to his parents' home. When he was gone, she knew she could hardly wait to hear about Christy! ------------------- David inhaled all of the aromas enroute to his family's house on Alexander Street. Fish, smoked sausage, and other delicious and pungent smells put him at ease in these familiar surroundings immediately. "I must have my wits, and I have anxious feelings now. Lord, I pray, not my will, but yours. Only you can work in a man or woman's heart. Help me to be wise and not keep repeating the same mistakes with girls, and not assume too much in relationships with them. Amen" . His parents, sisters, seminary friends and other relatives greeted him and enjoyed a sumptuous dinner with lively conversation. It had been too long! He enjoyed catching up with everyone, as well as sharing his intention to move back to Boston. He did not indulge about Christy, however. She was no longer a possibility in his future. He travelled the short way to her parents' home on Quincy Avenue, and to his delight, found her waiting outside her door. She was peering for the dark-haired minister, who at last greeted her. He was on familiar ground indeed! They hugged and held each other, looking into each other's eyes. "Oh David, I've missed you so much!" Sissel murmured against his shoulder. "Have you?" he queried. This time he was not teasing. "Yes, I have. I've been so busy, but I was wondering what was left in our friendship, since I was sure you were engaged!" They were silent for a few minutes, unsure of where to begin. David cleared his throat. "You want to know about Christy". There, he said it. "David, what happened?" she asked, wondering if this was meant to happen! "I've prayed long and hard about this. I was very attracted to her, and I thought she felt the same about me. She has such a giving heart, and on many occasions, I'd misinterpreted her words and actions. I was lonely, and it was not like there were other girls to be with." David said. More silence followed this. "I understand how you could have found her attractive, especially now, since I know who she is. I was never angry at you, David." She touched his arm and attempted to read his face. "You know, I told her that I wasn't sure if you would miss me much, that we would have to wait and see." "I know now that whatever will happen will be so as its intended to. I tried to force something to happen, I'm just so result-oriented! I was trying to gain a wife to go along with my accomplishments. My motives were not as pure as they could have been. Otherwise, I would have been thinking about you." He moved closer for more emphasis. Sissel was touched, and flattered, but she did not want to appear too eager. Especially when he'd just admitted his former motive! "Sissel, do you think ...I mean, do we have ...any kind of chance at all...to be... more than friends?" He cupped her soft face in his hands. She closed her eyes as she leaned into them. "Oh, I have dreamed of you suggesting this, but I want you to be sure. Absolutely sure! I don't want to be a replacement, just because your relationship didn't work out with Christy". "We've known each other too long to even think that. You were always there for me, long before I knew she existed. I know I banter alot, but I'm dead serious now." David looked at her intently. "David, I appreciate you being level with me since we're friends. But I tell you the truth; singing is definitely in my future. People tell me that I have this gift, and I must use it!" Sissel 's eyes met his intense gaze. Also, I know now what you mean by "born again". A kind lady at the station shared Jesus with me. I've felt an overwhelming calm about it ever since, and I want to find my place in church to help there." David took her hands in his, drawing her nearer to him. "Oh Sissel! I'm so pleased! I guess God has been working on both of us!" He started to chuckle, and she soon joined him. They paused for a moment, and he kissed her cheek. She then returned the favor! He held her for a minute, and slowly, she released his hold on her. "David, I may be wishy-washy about a lot of things, but I know that singing is my heart's desire!" She really wanted to make her point clear to him. "Can your heart's desire also include a man somewhere along the line?" He grew anxious as he drew her closer to him. "Yes, I believe that", Sissel thoughtfully answered. "I want to have a family of my own, to sing, and to be an important part of ..of...of..oh, I don't know! I'm trying to figure that out!" "Sissel, I have put in a transfer to St. Giles, and hopefully, I can return here in as little as six weeks." Her eyes grew wide. "Really? You want to come home? Oh, David, I've sensed your frustration from your letters. Maybe you're trying too hard. Maybe Cutter Gap is not the right place for your talents, or where people will appreciate you best." David and Sissel started to walk along the busy street, with the golden orbs of the lanterns accenting their walk. They were oblivious to everything and everyone except each other! David put his arm around her shoulder, as she was shivering. "I know your faith is young, but I believe Cutter Gap was a proving ground in a way. Not just ministry either. But, people need to be reached wherever they are, no matter what their circumstances are. God knows our hearts. It's just that a lot of people have a more fortunate beginning in life. Those that don't usually are not to blame. Christy is one of those people wanting to stay and serve in Cutter Gap. They need her and she needs them." "Is there another man in her life, do you think?" Sissel queried. David paused before giving her a reply. "I'm not free to say, not because I don't trust you, but I really don't know what will happen with her. Maybe she just wants to concentrate on teaching for awhile." "I can't really picture her alone for too long, can you?" she remarked, as they strolled along. "I only know how stubborn she can be when it comes to getting her way sometimes. I think she is wise beyond her years. Maybe more mature than me." He smiled at her, and she returned it. "Maybe I should take her cue. Only now I have the Lord's help! I want to help you enjoy yourself, and show you around. So much has changed down by the harbor. There are some new shops opening up there, and oh, I'd like you to see "Aida" with me! It's such a wonderful story." Sissel grew hopeful of the future. It seemed as bright as the stars glittering overhead. "I want you to teach me to read the Bible too". David felt a surge of warmth and assurance that he hadn't felt in a long time. Too long. "Sissel," he bowed gallantly before her. "Your wish is my command!" She giggled as she took his arm. "You are just too sweet!" The city clock chimed the 10:00 hour. They both looked up, laughed and it was some time before they said goodnight! ----------------- Back at the mission, Alice and Christy had been teaching the importance of good manners in all situations. Ruby Mae came out after school, pouting. If'm I act like a proper-like gal, I still don't think Rob Allen is gonna look my way! She looked at her teacher for feminine support. "Miss Christy, I got it bad!" "He aint lookin' my way either, Ruby Mae! He's a good 'un, he works real hard, and writes real good. How come he ain't lookin' at no gal nohow?" Bessie was glad to add her comments as well. Lizzie joined the discussion. "Reckon he's workin' on those stories after ya told him he could send 'em in the Yoonited states mail. Them city folks in New York gonna pay him money" Christy was milking the cows, her hands getting red from exposure. Some laundry was flapping in the wintry spring breeze. At least the sun was warm enough to enjoy being outdoors. She sidestepped the romance issue with the girls. "Now girls, he'll get paid only if New York wants to buy any stories he sends in. Mr. and Mrs. Allen know we're encouraging him here, but we also don't want him to get disappointed either if the newspaper there says no." "Indeed!" Alice came out to join the group and their conversation. Christy turned to her, as the girls started out to their homes, and Ruby Mae had since gone to the mission house. "Oh, Miss Alice, if he makes any money, it could help the Allens' so much!" Alice regarded Christy warmly, appreciating her enthusiasm. "That is commendable, but as I recall thy lesson of the sewing circle, you must remember, to each his own! You can offer a new view or idea, but it people's decisions must be made as a free will choice of the heart." Christy smiled at Alice's wisdom. "That's like Fairlight giving the quilt to be sold in Asheville so her children could have some shoes!" That seemed so long ago. She grew introspective. "Rob is old enough to fancy some girl here. I'm sure he is doing right by his family by working at the mill. But you know these girls!" This was a pleasant line of talk for Alice, considering all of the minor illnesses and absences from school. "Seems like they want to meet their knight in shining armor any day now, with spring around the corner!" Christy laughed, as she finished her task. Alice helped her carry the milk buckets into the mission. "More like Bonnie Prince Charlie, to bring things closer to home!" She chuckled merrily. Bonnie Prince Charlie. Yes, that made Christy think of....Bonnie Prince Neil?! You foolish girl! She shoved those words to the back of her mind and changed the subject. "Have you heard anything new about Margaret's condition? I've heard you mention only the diagnostic tests and x-rays." "They have left Cora's house to move into a small house by the river close by." Alice volunteered this news. How like Neil to take comfort by living near a river! "I think, Christy, that I am not being told everything." Alice contemplated aloud. "I'll be going to Knoxville for a short visit after Bird's Eye's wedding. "I know Margaret is bored there, and no doubt has gone back to work. I don't know this for certain. Just certain observations about her unhappiness." Christy seemed puzzled. Maybe she needed to feel needed in some way? What was going on? Could Neil not be enough for her? "Did she tell you that?" "Neil wrote me that. They are trying to salvage their relationship. Neil is going to church there, but Margaret could care less about his decision for Christ. She's in a comfortable home, with medical care available, and Aunt Cora. I don't know what else she could want." Alice shook her head. Christy's eyes grew wide. "Neil is a Christian?! Oh that is wonderful news!" She clapped her hands in delight. "Yes, and we know that decision brings new challenges with it. He is new, and he is getting fed at his church. He is meeting supportive people. That's quite a change from someone that didn't think he needed anyone, certainly not a group!" Alice stated. "I really pray for them, Miss Alice", Christy touched her arm, and her elder knew she meant that from the bottom of her heart. "As do I. Come! We have a menu to plan for this Sunday's gathering. We will finally meet Truby and Caroline. David should be back Saturday. Oh, yes, Dr. Ferrand is coming in May for a visit!" Alice's mind focused on the upcoming happy events in the cove. It made her better able to cope with the uncertain future of her daughter. Christy and Alice put away the new milk. "Have you ever wanted to get married, Miss Alice? Pardon me if this is too private a matter to discuss!" Alice knew that Christy respected her boundaries and gave her an honest answer. "I feel my calling in life is to remain single. I enjoy my many duties and friendships, and everything the Lord has given me to enjoy. He wants us to enjoy life Christy, whether married or single. My communion to Him only grows deeper with time." "Do you...think it's too late?" Christy pondered carefully. "Thee is young and full of life, Christy. You love everything and everyone too much for love not to find you. I believe thee was wise to refuse David. Have no fear, love will find you. As we give, we will receive in due time if we faint not. I am paraphrasing scripture!" They shared a quiet moment. Christy thought of someone she could maybe love; someone who, in no doubt enjoyed the arms of another woman. Someone in Knoxville. He Hhhhhh Chapter 10 It was a lovely spring day in Cutter Gap. The pink and white dogwoods dotted the mountainous landscape, and the air was fragrant with other spring blooms. Lavenders and yellows were also part of this beautiful picture, along with the fresh green in the trees. "YAHOO!" Children scampered outside after church concluded with the final "Amen". Ruby Mae, Alice, Fairlight, Christy and Opal started to set up the tables and carry out the dishes to celebrate Bird's Eye's and Truby's upcoming wedding. Truby wore her black hair pinned up, which looked nice against her green frock and white blouse. Her daughter Caro-line had curlier dark hair that was tied into a ponytail. They were very cheery women indeed, no doubt answered prayers for Lundy and his father. Emotions were not shared easily among the mountain folk, but the air was filled with the well wishes and thankfulness to God for the cause of this gathering. "Truby sorta rhymes with Ruby", commented Ruby Mae. "They's nice wimmen folk". She was helping herself to another plate of sweet potato pie. "Ruby Mae, see that wheelbarra? You're goin' in it, you keep eatin' that pie!" John Spencer laughed. The older children teased and had fun with each other, as Lundy sauntered over to them. He'd been an outsider for so long. "Glad there's no hard feelins' about anythin'" he said. "Shore enough, Lundy, come let's get us more pie!" John looked over to the red-haired girl. "None for Ruby Mae, though!" He accented her name for emphasis, bringing more laughter among the group. Lundy threw back his head and guffawed. As the boys were helping themselves to more food, John looked over at Caro-line. "You a lucky fella, Lundy. She shore got pretty hair." Bessie had come up behind them and noticed her John surveying Lundy's intended! "JOHN SPENCER!" "Uh oh!" The boys muttered as they grinned at each other, knowingly. Bessie threw a hissy fit! "I cain't get but three feet away from you and your eyes followin' other gals!" "Hush up Bessie, no one here has seen her before! She nice as she looks?" John asked Lundy. " LOOKIT THAR!" Bessie 's mouth gaped wide open as she pointed her finger toward the mission house. Ruby Mae followed her gaze, and looked at her friend. "So that's it!" She marvelled, as John, Lundy, and Bessie observed the two figures on the side of the mission near the washroom. Away from the mainstream activity were two young people who found a common ground of academics, dreams, and finding a way to put them together. Rob Allen and Zady Spencer. "You heered about your stories yet?" The young girl asked the tall, older student. "Got me a letter that says theys gonna pay me some good money! I sent in that story about Bonnie Prince Charlie and the my clan!" he smiled bashfully. "I'm workin' on a couple other ones when I'm not at school or workin' at the mill." "You got your pa believin' in you, and no wonder! You so good and all!" Zady was very interested . "Ya know, I want to be a nurse someday. Reckon I will?" "I think so, maybe. Too bad doc isn't here. That doc Asby fella maybe can holp ya" Zady nodded her head. "We all knows about the city fellas liked doc and holped him go to school." Maybe that doc Ashby can holp me, him being a city fella too. I still cain't believe doc isn't here, miss him awful my folks do!" Rob agreed with her. "His wife need him more, I guess. Just wish he didn't have to go." -------------------- David aswered the telephone and ran out the door to find Alice, who was chatting with Granny Barclay and Mary Allen. "It's Dr. McNeill on the phone, and he says it's urgent!" Heads turned at the sound of his voice, and watched as Alice ran inside the mission. Christy and others stared at the door a few moments, then quietly, Alice emerged. Martin caught up with her. "What's wrong, Alice?" "There's been a terrible accident with my daughter. I have a train ticket waiting for me in El Pano. David, I'll be down momentarily. Expect a call from me tonight or tomorrow. Christy, please keep us in your prayers." Alice took her hands in her own. "Miss Alice, what happened? What else can I do?" Christy whispered, fearing the worst. "It appears that she ran out in front of a supply carriage in town. I'll find out more when I get there. I'll call the mission later." To Christy, Alice and David seemed to be leaving in slow motion. Fairlight touched her arm. "Aint nothin' anybodys can do except pray now. I'm helpin' out more at the mission now. Good thing Dr. Ashby lives at the mission too. C'mon girl, let's get some cider!" Fairlight and Christy walked to the cider barrel, and stopped. Fairlight leaned forward for a closer look. "Is that my Zady with Rob Allen? What in tarnation is goin' on? He's six years older'n her". "They are both smart students that love to learn. They're both quiet and reflective, too". Christy said. Fairlight shook her head. "Somethin' about older men, I guess!" "Yes, I suppose so," Christy mused as they mingled with everyone. ------------------ "I'd like to accompany you, Alice." David entreated her. "Yes, I'd like that, David. Christy is helping the children with an Easter play. I asked Martin and Fairlight to help out a little more at the mission in my absence." They boarded together, and it wasn't too long before the train whistled its way into Knoxville. Neil greeted them as they disembarked. He looked weary physically and mentally. "Margaret's condition is very grave." He drew Alice aside. "Let's go somewhere quiet. Excuse us, Reverend". David nodded his assent, and proceeded to read a newspaper and get caught up on the baseball scores. Neil and Alice sat down on a bench. Your daughter's accident was a reaction when she found out she contracted syphilis. It was another routine exam, complete with blood work. She'd complained about skin ulcers, and blisters. We know symptoms of this sort show up in females, when the disease has progressed a bit. I wouldn't have known otherwise, I think she was in denial about. It is, after all, a shameful disease due to careless choices. I was working so much at night, not unlike Cutter Gap. She wanted to go into town for some entertainment. I think she realized that she couldn't bear to live with the shame, so she ran out in front of a supply carriage. The horse got spooked, and the contents spilled out all over the street. Several large cannisters fell on top of her, and she suffered a skull fracture as well as internal injuries." Neil paused to let this settle in. "I really tried to make her happy, Alice." Alice took this heartbreaking news as bravely as she could. "Thee has made a sacrifice by putting her needs ahead of thine own. I'll always admire you for that." "I've tried to share my beliefs with her too." Neil called David over. "Maybe you can talk to her, at least you can pray for her. It would mean a lot." "I'll be happy too, doctor". David said in a solemn voice. The threesome took a cab over to the hospital and made their way to the room where Margaret was being treated. She was heavily sedated with morphine, given by Drs. Steven Mason. He was being observed by Neil's longtime colleague, Dr. James Healy. "It looks bad, Neil. There is considerable bleeding. The pressure on her internal organs must have been intense." Steven addressed them. The reality hit Alice like a ton of bricks. "Oh Margaret, my poor child!" She put a hand to her face to hide her sobbing. "If thee can hear me, know that you are forgiven, and I ask you to do the same for me. You're so precious to me, my child!" She took Margaret's hand as she sat down beside her on the bed. "N-Neil? M-Mother? I'm so tired. I hurt all over!" Margaret's voice was groggy. "I couldn't go on, just couldn't....with no hope." David took this cue and approached her bed. "Mrs. McNeill, God loves you and wants to call you his own. Won't you accept the free gift he wants to give you. Do you want to see your loved ones someday?" His voice lowered to a whisper as he ministered to her. Her ashen face looked like wax. "I've hurt so many people, made so many bad decisions. I'm not good enough for God!" David took her hand in his own. "There's always hope. God made it possible for anyone to be able to enter His presence. I'll pray now...." He bowed his head over hers. As he prayed, a serene glow passed over her face. As eternal life came to Margaret, her physical life came to a close. David stood up. "She's gone. I'm sure God heard all that was in her heart. She's in a better home now." Alice touched his shoulder. "Thee has been a comfort, David." Neil extended his hand. "Thank you for coming." Neil made provisions at his home for his company, and they enjoyed a pleasant meal at a nearby restaurant. "What are you going to do after the funeral, Neil?" Alice asked him. "Martin's son has a chronic condition that needs attention. He informed us that within the last few weeks of February, that his wife is now with child!" "I know what I would like to do, but first, I will pray about it. I want to come home." he emphasized. "More than anything. I came here for her, and now she's gone. After the funeral, selling my house and a few other things." Alice was happy to hear this! " I think that would be best, for all concerned." Neil lit his pipe and smiled. "Do you mean to tell me I was missed? Why don't you both fill me in?" Alice and David did just that. ---------------------------- R-R-Ring!!!! The telephone shook as it rang, causing Ruby Mae to jump in her seat! "Dr. Ashby, it's fer ya!" Martin got up and took the phone. "Hello? Yes....fancy you calling....I'll leave for Asheville as soon as you give me word on your return....Yes, it's been quite an experience...Dan is doing wonderfully. When he comes to Asheville for hospital time, I'll be happy to help him all I can! My condolences...my boy is fine, thank you." He slowly hung up the receiver, running a hand through his light hair. "My stay is almost over," he announced. "Over??" Ruby Mae and Christy echoed in unison. "Ðr. McNeill is coming back to Cutter Gap.....alone...." Chapter 11 "ALONE?" Ruby Mae and Christy echoed in unison. "Apparently, Mrs. McNeill got killed in an accident in town." Martin shook his head. "Lordamercy! Where you gonna go, doc Martin?" Ruby Mae exclaimed. "My real home is in Asheville, unlike your teacher here." He winked at Christy. "My family needs me. When things get situated in Knoxville, he'll return here." Christy didn't know what to think. Sad? Most certainly, for Neil's sake. Excited? Beyond words! Worried? Would he come back changed somehow, with Margaret "dying" a second time? A man can take only so much! David had not spoken about Neil's imminent return after returning from Margaret's funeral. He indeed had helped Alice through a difficult time in her life! No, of course not! There were more important matters at hand! In fact, David was in an extremely good mood these days! Like he was keeping a big secret! What had happened in Boston? Christy and David had not really caught up with each other. There was Bird's Eye's and Truby's gathering after church, Margaret's death, and the Easter preparations at school. Joy followed by sorrow, which had the promise of joy following once more. After Martin and Ruby Mae retired for the evening, Christy sat by the fire and stared into the flames. What happened in Knoxville? Find David and ask him? She realized she probably shouldn't. After all\ they were no longer "courting", and it would hardly be proper to be alone at night together. "I'll ask him tomorrow after I work on the play", she reasoned. She arose, walked up the old stairs to her room, and sought refuge there. A soft rain began to fall on the new siding David had installed, causing a pitter-patter sound outside her window. The popping sound was soothing to her, as she thought on how God was in control, bringing about the best for everyone that came to mind. David's upbeat mood, Martin's eagerness to return to the city, the changes for Bird's Eye and Lundy, which was reflected in the love their women had given them. "Jes' you wait'n see!" Bird's Eye had gushed to her that day. "Yes, I will wait and see!" Christy thought to herself. Finally being lulled to sleep, she began to dream and faces and words swirled around in her mind. "So what are your feelings for Mac these days?" "I'm disappointed in you, Miss Huddleston!" "May I have this dance, ma'am?" "You remind me of a character I've been reading about. Her name is Pollyanna." "Don't be so sure it's the first time." "You're important to me, Christy, getting more important all the time. More important...you're important...all the time...time...time..." In a split second, she was in an ornately designed parlor room, where she was being fitted for a dress. The lavender dress was way too tight! No way could she ever hope to wear it. Yet, it was being forced upon her! She held fast to the lavender-colored wall, gritting her teeth and holding her breath with every pull. "Tighter, tighter! You can do it! Whatever you set your mind to do, YOU CAN DO IT!" All of a sudden, feeling lightheaded, she felt as if she couldn't breathe! Panic gripped her as everything started to go black. Right before she did, she glanced at her attendant, who continued to pull the laces tight . "You didn't think you could EVER wear this dress, now COULD YOU!" Margaret's sneering face bursted out into a devilish laugh. "Hurry up Christy! Our congregation is waiting for us outside! It's expected, you know. And there's the ladies dinner, and visitation......." The voice of David trailed off. "HELP HELP!" Christy screamed as she awoke abruptly. Had she called for help? No, all was silent. She still was trying to catch her breath, as she realized she was wearing her nightgown. Her white, soft, comfortable nightgown. ------------------------------- One whole week had passed, and Christy was still not able to tell Fairlight about her dream. She had been busy tendin Least'un and Lulu with recurring colds. Jeb had also been under the weather, so with Fairlight tending to her family, Christy had an increased work load. After a "possum suprise" dinner from Ruby Mae, she walked out on the mission porch, watching the orange orb of the sun sink behind the dark silhouette of the mountain ranges. David came out on the porch to talk with her. "Lovely evening, Christy. I've been meaning to talk with you." David cleared his throat. Christy turned to him. "Yes, David, we really haven't had time, there's been so much work to do lately. It's nice to be outside tonight, though." "I've put in for a transfer to St. Giles Presbyterian in Boston. Hopefully, I'll be gone in six weeks." "Yes, David". She felt akward suddenly, not knowing quite what to say. "I know you'll be missed here, but I can understand that you want to leave Cutter Gap." She played with her yellow bow on her dress. "This just isn't my home anymore. Not that it really was." David 's tone had no bitterness or remorse, as Christy might have thought. Just a simple observation was in his voice. Christy changed the subject, as silence had been uncomfortable between them. "You must have had quite a good time. Did you see Sissel?" "I did. I swear Boston is growing by leaps and bounds! More shops, homes, markets, everything! In a whisper, he leaned to her a little. "You'd like it, Christy." She straightened in her chair, trying to avoid anything that might suggest intimacy beyond friends. "I know what the city is like, David," she spoke softly. "I can hardly wait to get back! For the first time in ages, I feel at peace about this." "Oh David, I'm so happy for you! I know things will work out for the best!" They both stood up, and shared a mutual, friendly embrace. David enjoyed this immensely, and felt the familiar impulse to get closer to her. He knew he was being tempted! "Well, I'll say goodnight now. Try not to stay out too late." David swiftly left her standing there. Christy walked slowly around the porch, looking up at the crescent of a moon. "The sun to light the earth by day, and the moon to light the earth by night", she had read in her Bible. "Oh, Lord, continue to light my way," she prayed silently. She enjoyed silence among the outdoors, with Neil, Alice and Fairlight. It was only with David that silences were difficult. "Lord, help David prepare for the journey that lies before him. Help his heart to heal from my rejection of him, and help him open his heart to love again. Amen." As she opened the door, to go to her room, she stopped suddenly. With no particular urgency, she heard a horse's gallops approach in the direction of the mission. Christy peered into the darkness, trying to make out the figure on the horse. Why did he stop? He was still far enough away in order to identify him. If Martin had been making a call, he would have come straight for the mission. He does have a room here, she thought. She had the strangest feeling that she was being watched! All of a sudden, the horse and its rider seemed to return in the direction from which they came. Christy stared after them. Who could it be? Everyone in the mission had gone to bed, including Martin, she presumed. Bird's Eye would not be out pulling pranks, or any man hunting would not have taken a horse. Since there was no imminent threat, she went quickly inside and up to her room. It would still be a long time before sleep would come. Could it be?? CHAPTER 12 "YOOOONITED STATES MAIL!!!!!!" Ben Pentland's voice boomed over the valley as he rode his way to the Allen cabin. "Here's a piece for Rob from New York City! Ain't it a wonder!" He exclaimed as he handed it to Bob Allen. Bob rubbed his chin and wiped his hands on his overalls. He opened the letter. "I wonder if this is any good. Don't want to get his hopes up, just want him to survive, ya know?" Ben tried to peer over Bob's shoulder. "Weeel, I guess it cain't hurt! What's it say?" the inquiring postman asked. "Looks like money to me!" Bob stared at the letter in disbelief. "Ya got a smart boy, Bob. Didn't knowed the cove got so many smart young'uns. Reckon that's Miss Huddleston's doin'." "Yep, see ya now." Bob waved off Ben as he ventured toward his cabin's open door. "Oh boy, oh boy, it's great to be the carrier of the Yoonited States mail!" Ben chirped to himself as he headed downhill in the mission direction. David was mending the chicken fence where wiring was getting a little weakened. He inhaled the sweet mild mountain air when he saw Ben approaching. He stopped from his work to greet him. It had been six weeks exactly that he had been in Boston. "Got anything in your mailbag for me, by any chance?" His voice was filled with expectancy. "Matter'n fact, I do!" Ben replied, as he handed a large manilla envelope to him . It had a huge stamped seal on the back. "Looks mighty important, if I say so myself!" David was so engrossed in reading his mail that he forgot that Ben was still present! He noticed that Ben had held up the envelope in the air, hoping to see through its contents! "DANG!" he muttered. "What's it say? Bad news?" Ben asked. "It's uh, a private matter," David mumbled under his breath. "Aw shucks, preacher. Each'n his own now. Don't mean to poke in preacher's business. That would it be, I reckon." Ben looked at him curiously. He knew that he was the sensitive type when it came to "his business". "Oh well, folks will know soon enough!" Ben spoke more to himself, than to David. "I beg your pardon?" David formally questioned. "Be seein' ya. Ya know about Bird's Eyes' weddin got moved up, doncha? Somethin' about her grandam gettin' the fever. Heared about it from doc." David grew tired and impatient all of a sudden. "Goodbye Ben," he wearily bidded him farewell as Ben galloped away until he disappeared from sight. "DANG!" ------------- Alice just stepped outside reading her Bible outdoors and observing the newly green buds on the mission trees. David walked right past her, muttering under his breath. "DANG!" he vented out loud. "Good morning, David! She cheerily called out to him. "A fine one it is, too. Spring mornings refresh my spirit!" David tried to regroup his thoughts! "I, uh, didn't see you here." "Is something troubling thee?" Alice was concerned, as she realized that he had a lot on his mind these days. "It appears that my request for transfer has been postphoned until August! I thought I would be hearing word by now. The board wants to wait until my tenure is over, and there won't be a vacancy until then." David looked thoroughly disgusted now. Alice, ever so wise, paused before answering. "Perhaps it's for the best, David...." He interrupted her. "Easy for you to say! I had it all planned out, to go home, resume a more serious relationship with Sissel...." His voice trailed off, as he saw his predicament! She regarded him calmly. "Six months ago, thee was in a rush to marry Christy. That "plan" did not work out. Thee see that when thee include others in "thy plan", thee is not letting God move in your behalf. It can only lead to disappointment. Not to mention what is best for these others, and it may not be in their best interests." David 's frustration grew with every passing minute, as he realized she was telling him the hard truth. "Thee and Christy are co-workers at this mission. It's important to know we all are God's servants here, and finding a spouse is not top priority. I expressed this to Christy shortly after her arrival here. It gives me joy that you have someone in mind now to cultivate a friendship with." Alice patiently spoke these words. "I believe Christy understands this." His face clouded at the mention of the young teacher's name. "I guess my plan wasn't good enough.. I had hoped...."He sighed deeply, and Alice put her hand on his shoulder. "God's ways are not our ways, and His timing is often different from ours. The just shall live by believing, scripture paraphrased! Somehow thee must seek peace and pursue it during this time." She smiled at him,"and write her often!" He returned her smile weakly, as if not totally convinced. ---------------- e HH-------- "I had the dream again! I'm so confused!" Christy admitted to Fairlight, as they shared a leisurely stroll in the woods. Their walk led them to a babbling stream, and there they paused to pick some dogwoods and lilac. "Somethins' troublin' ya, to have the same dream twice. The Bible says that two is a mighty powerful number, about two agreein', two askin' anythin' in the Lord's name. It means somethin's bound to happen for sure! Two is pretty well set." Fairlight stooped down to gather some ferns. "Miss Alice says it's like God underlining something important, when something is twice." Christy offered thoughtfully. "Yep, that lilac color dress showin' up and all, and what she said to ya. She tryin' to have power over ya, though she be six feet under in the ground!Tryin' to choke life outta ya, too, if'n ya married the preacher! His and Neil's words too meanin' what you were and were not meant to be!" The flaxen- haired woman's words were solemn enough, and Christy respected them. Fairlight's "premonitions" were often correct. Christy had been in Cutter Gap long enough to know its proper place among the mountain people. She also knew from scripture that Fairlight often tested her visions against God's teachings for closure. Light was dawning for Christy. "That's why I felt like I couldn't breathe! I felt so controlled and scared!" She shuddered at the memory, and Fairlight moved closer to draw her closer to herself. "I was like Mountie's doll, being pulled in different directions! Why does it still bother me?" "Well, girl, ya tell me! I got good sensin' eye, but I can't tell ya what's in your heart." "I know that saying no to David was right. There were just too many questions and not enough answers. Your questions helped me realize something I never considered before. I've always done the expected thing, until I came here. You have shown me that I need to get in touch with my feelings. That's why I went to God's Fist that day in the fall. I thought love was something you could learn to do in time, if two people were right for each other." Christy confessed to her friend. "Ya either do or don't Miz Christy. Ya can't tell your heart to do what it don't feel. If ya were in love, ya wouldn't think twice." Fairlight exhorted her. "I only hope David will find love with someone who deserves him, and that will care for him the way he needs to be cared for. He's getting a new position anytime now." Christy was putting a pretty lilac through a button hole in her dress, inhaling the scent. "We'll see," Fairlight eyed her, knowingly. "Neil's back." "That may explain something else. How is he?" Christy asked. "Hurtin'. He's been through a lot. Don't know what hurts more, though. Word around the cove said somethin' mighty terrible happened to her how she died. He sure hated leavin' the cove!" Fairlight shook her head in sympathy. "He did the honorable thing, Fairlight. It may have been hard, but it was right." Christy sighed. "Tell me what you know." Fairlight gave an update upon Neil's return, since Jeb helped keep an eye on his cabin. His patients, going over medical history with Martin before he left, and trying to move ahead in his life. "Oh, Fairlight, I've dreamed of him, I'm ashamed to say. " "Ya won't know how he feels for sure, if ya don't find out." the mountain woman stated. "Oh! I couldn't just...well, it's not proper for a lady to just come out with her feelings of affection!" Christy put a hand over her mouth, while Fairlight laughed. "If he didn't feel the same, well, I would survive." "Would ya? Now Miss Alice and Swannie, they're doing fine without a man around. Seems they don't even want one! Ya ain't one of those, ya got too much love and care to give away!" Christy took this compliment in all humility, as she blushed. Fairlight put her flowers down, and took her small hands in her own. "Miz Christy, ya gotta tell folks how you feel. Life's too short not to tell what's in your heart! Ya ain't in Asheville, and it's perfect fittin' here to say it. You gotta know so you and he can go on livin!" Christy felt so moved that tears formed in her eyes, brimming over with gratitude. To finally share her heart with someone what had been burdening her heart for the latter part of the previous year. "What would I do without you, Fairlight?" she whispered. "Oh, shucks, Miz Christy! Ya always manage to figure that one out! I swar ya do!" ---------------------------------- On the lovely April morning of Easter, there was much to celebrate. The Easter play had been an inspiration to all during the church service. Now, it was time to take the journey to Lufty Branch for Bird's Eye's wedding. "Christy? Are you ready? We are leaving now if you are coming with us!" Alice called out to Christy, who was observing the hem of her red printed dress, which matched perfectly with the floral hat she decided to wear for the occasion. She even had gold earrings on, something she rarely did in the cove. "our congregation is still waiting.....come on, Christy! They are waiting, waiting......"She pushed the echoeing words of her dream and tried to will them to stay away. "I'm going with the Spencer's. Fairlight has something to show me first!" "Alright, Christy." David resigned as he realized she would not ride in their posse. The small group slowly travelled in the direction of Lufty Branch. Christy gathered up her shawl and mounted Buttons toward the Spencer cabin. There, at the back entrance of the cabin, was Neil. Fairlight came onto the porch seeing a startled Christy and Neil! "It worked!" she mused to herself. Something to show her indeed! "We're getting ready to leave now. Wanna follow us?" she looked from one to the other. Christy was silent, then with resolution on her mind, stated that she would stay! Neil hesitantly moved closer to her, not knowing quite what to say! "Hello, Christy." He ventured, as he kept a respectable distance from her. "Neil! I'm so glad.....I mean, everyone's missed you so much!" She lowered her glance and whispered, "so have I." Chapter 13 Both seemed unable to speak, as the cardinals continued to chirp overhead. "Now that I'm back, I want to know something. Why did you come to my cabin that day?" Neil began in earnest. "And I want to know why you followed me to the mission after I left." Christy countered. "What you saw was not a mutual embrace, Christy." "It didn't matter, Neil," was her quick reply. "Why did you come?" Neil's voice dropped to a whisper. "I wanted to tell you....that I was still your friend, and ....I wanted your marriage to have a second chance. God would have desired that. Besides....", her words came haltingly. "Yes?" Neil probed her. "It got so ....hard for me. I would have probably have left the cove if you had'nt", she wiped away a tear. "That's why I left! Margaret needed advanced care that she couldn't get here. I had to go! Everyone needs you here, Christy. I couldn't abide your leaving on our account." Neil was emphatic. "On account of YOU?! I was thinking of leaving anyway! I just couldn't think!" She cried angrily as she held her head in her hands. "Oh what was I to do?" she barely whispered. "Alright, I apologize to think you would leave because of Margaret and I. I followed you because she led me to believe that you had accepted David's proposal this time. I did'nt expect to see him standing there, holding a ring box in his hand, if he indeed had proposed. I thought that you surely would have told me. " She gasped, as she saw that he almost believed a lie! "Oh no, ....no ...I just couldn't bring myself to do it. Your presence actually helped strengthen my resolve. ..I struggled so much with this for so long..." Christy searched for words as she conveyed her feelings. "Thank you for being my friend. Somehow it didn't seem right for "love" to have so much pressure, trying to live with other's ideals for me. It was like my life was decided for me before I really felt like I was ready to live it. You never made me feel that way." Christy confessed softly, as she looked into his eyes. "And I won't now," was his soft answer as he brushed his rough hand against her cheek, in that familiar way. Her blue eyes communicated a sort of longing, but he dared not interpret it as such. "Margaret's gone now, and I feel I did right by her to take her from here." He sighed deeply. "She just wasn't going to be happy anywhere. I'm sure Alice told you what happened, so I will spare you the details. I'm glad the reverend was there to lead her into the light, which was an answer to prayer. I'm not questioning him so much as a minister. It's Grantland the man that I take issue with." He coughed a little, and went on. "I have valued your frienship and would never do anything to intently injure it. You understand that I could not write to you personally. I want you.....to tell me.....", he hesitated. "Tell you what?" she grew breathless, as he moved closer to her. His hazel eyes were burning into her blue ones, as he dropped to his knees before her. He chose his words carefully, and he rephrased his question. "I want to tell you that I love you, Christy. More deeply and completely than ever before. I care far too much to rush you into anything you feel that you are not ready for, and that includes love. If you feel anything like that for me....." She turned her head so he would not see her sobbing. "Oh Neil, you love me? I didn't dare think you would have those feelings for me. I thought I was just a naive girl to you. You have baffled me in the past, so how was I to know?" she queried. Her teary blue eyes shone like blue gems, and the sight almost took his breath away, as they were sharing very deep emotions. He took her hand and gently began to rub it, enclosing his fingers around her smaller ones. "Do you remember that day we were fishing? I said the dance is more important than the frying pan. Well, Miss Huddleston", he lowered his voice intentionally, "I want to dance with you." "Surely all dances come to an end?" she gently questioned him, as she attempted a smile. "Not the dance I'm describing. He sported a roguish grin. "Love is something that the whole process should be enjoyed, not hurried. Besides, my dear love, it's you and I we're talking about." "That was you that rode up to the mission that night, wasn't it?" It all fit together now! The dream, the uncertainties about David, the fishing, Neil's night ride....... "Trying to get a glimpse of Juliet." He grinned, as he sighed happily. A thrill of rapture poured over her mind and body as he gently emptied his heart's contents into hers. "Oh Neil, now I know beyond a doubt that its you that I'm in love with!" she cried happily. He drew her close, kissing her hair and moved to her cheek. She closed her eyes, as she revelled in his warmth and tenderness in his actions! "I love you, my little one", he choked as he lowered his lips to meet hers in a gentle kiss. At the touch of his lips, she threw her arms around his neck, and began to cry on his shoulder. His strong, comfortable shoulder. "What is it, Christy? Oh tell me, what did I do?" he peered anxiously into her face. "Oh I'm just so happy, and it's because of you!" she exclaimed. He chuckled, relieved, and drew her closer. "Don't forget that you are one-half of this math equation, dear." They both laughed, and he observed that he had never really heard her laugh. It was a sweet, musical, almost child-like quality to it that endeared him. He glanced at his watch. "Looks like there's a wedding in Lufty Branch that's about. Will you dance with me there?" As if he had to ask! She smiled a radiant smile for him. "With you, my dance card is completely filled." The loveliness of that Easter day as the sun shone through the pines could not be compared with a true declaration of love. As they rode away, Christy had this indescribable feeling of wonderment, thrill and comfort. Love. Chapter 14 Summer always made its gracious, yet grand entrance in Cutter Gap. Word in the cove was the ever-growing romance between the doctor and Miss Christy! Now, the mission bustled with activity as preparations were made for Dr. Ferrand's visit, which was one month later than planned. David had been stocking up on supplies in the back of the mission house, with his mind on other things than the work at hand. Letters to and from Boston eased his loneliness some, but his his heart still ached to be healed completely. He remembered Bird's Eye's wedding, where Neil and Christy danced and gazed into each other's eyes. "There's nothing to stop them now," he thought ruefully. He had never seen her so relaxed and happy! There was a new quiet sense of passsion and vitality that could not be missed by anyone! From Mountie to Granny Barclay, folks commented, joked about, understood and accepted this budding relationship. "And I'm watching this played right before my eyes!" David reflected. It was once said that the "lower affection must give way to a higher affection". Selfishness consumed David's conscience whenever he thought of Christy and Neil together. All because of a stupid letter, putting his dreams and desires on hold! Sissel had been "considering" for a few months now. What would he be getting into in Boston? The higher way would have included being a friend, helper, and encourager in faith. Christy was undeniably happy, he was not! It was that simple. Christy walked up to the schoolhouse, carrying some pails of water for washing the desks, tidying up the room and anything else that required the use of water. She started arranging her desk, refilling worn down pencils with newer ones with better erasers, and restocking small pads of paper for each desk. David watched her go inside, and strained to hear her singing softy in her off-key voice. "Hmmmph, maybe it won't work out. She'll see!" he grumbled, and struck his thumb with his hammer. "Ouch!" Neil's figure on horseback grew closer until he approached the school. He led his horse to a post, and tied him there, before knocking on the door. He smiled as he saw his beloved toiling away, and pulled a short, fat notebook from his saddlebag. "Here's a book for Zady that Dan and I put together, a primer if you will. Dan did the pictures, that man can draw as well as he can carve! Anyway, it will help her understand a bit about nursing." "Oh Neil, she'll be so happy! Thank you, Neil!" she bubbled as she looked it over. He leaned over her, and as she looked up, he touched her lips with his own. "That was nice, doctor!" she cooed, putting her arms around his waist. His labor of love touched her deeply. The joy of the children indeed! "I'll be Low Gap for a few days to treat a few minor, but recurring problems there. I won't even ask if you will miss me!" he joked, as he pretended to pout, thrusting out his lower lip. "But I will! So much!" she emphasized, as she tiptoed to kiss his cheek. She sighed softy, as she rested her head on his chest, enjoying the embrace. Neil glanced toward the mission. "How is he doing today?" "Oh, He's just depressed a little. I don't know if he can wait until August! He's been a little snappy to everyone lately." Christy told him. "I guess we'll have to leave it up to God, won't we?" Neil cupped her chin in his hand. As she nodded her head in agreement, a carriage drove up. YOOOONITED STATES MAIL!! "Goodbye, Christy", doctor kissed her hand, making her giggle. "Goodbye, dear Neil," she whispered, as they hugged one more time. As he mounted his horse, he saw the elderly gentleman step out of the carriage. He greeted Dr. Ferrand, then rode until he vanished from sight. Alice came out at the sound of Ben Pentland's arrival, her hands unconsciously tidying up her hair, just as she would answer the telephone! "Jacob!" she welcomed him. "Thy visits always gives me cause to rejoice! How are things in ......" She rambled off the places of interest, concern and need that punctuated Jacob Ferrand's visitations, as well as some of her own. "Alice, I'm happy to see you, as usual!" He gave her a peck on her cheek, in a brotherly way. "I have some news for David, that will cheer him a bit." "I will let thee rest from your journey." Alice smiled as she led him to his room. "Then we will discuss David." Chapter 15 Christy caught sight of David's glowering gaze as she hurried into the kitchen. "Miss Alice, is Dr. Ferrand going to talk to David about his transfer? He's been upset and a little grouchy lately." "Christy, we are having a meeting at 4:00 in the drawing room. Jacob has a few items to discuss, as there will be some new changes coming soon." Alice informed her, brewing the tea. 4:00. Fifteen more minutes, Christy observed, glancing at the clock. ------------------------ David had been brushing Prince, Goldie, and Buttons and had led them away from the mission. He made his way toward the drawing room, after his task was finished. Jacob sat down and rubbed his grey, bristled beard as he surveyed his agenda. A frown knitted his features as he concentrated for a moment. David strode in through the open door. "What's going on?" he asked breathlessly. "Sit down, David," Jacob stated. "Ladies, if you'll excuse us for a moment." Alice and Christy got up and left quietly. The older man cleared his throat. "David, Alice has called to my attention some of your attitudes lately. Impatience being a chief concern." His voice was gruff, but not unkind. David fidgeted in his chair. "Well, I'm not to leave until August. I guess I am impatient." "Would you care to enlighten me? I am here to help you however I can, David." You are the minister here, you must be careful that you are an example to all people at all times. You must take care not to react in a childish way whenever things are not happening the way you want them to happen. We've had this talk before." Jacob spoke in earnest. David knew he could not help but speak his mind. "It's hard....seeing him....with her...." he spoke akwardly. "Why? Neil is a free man. I personally find it a charming idea. Both of them are committed to serving these people for one thing! They could help each other in other ways, as well." Jacob noted thoughtfully. "David, in ministry, you will encounter both men and women, single and married. It's important that you don't lose sight of the main reason you are here or anywhere else. Christy is your spiritual sister, as is Alice, and even Ruby Mae. We must not make preferences about how we treat others, and not misinterpret another's kind words or actions as personal interest. Christy has made some very hard choices for one so young, and she has grown tremendously. What she does with her free time is her concern, not yours. I hope you understand I am not judging you, only doing my responsibility as overseer of this mission. And, David..." David breathed in deeply and regarded Jacob. "Yes sir?" he asked meekly. Jacob now faced him squarely, after looking out the window during his little "speech". "I am happy to inform you that St.Giles is expecting you July 14! God obviously opened a door for you. In a few weeks, Rev. Shawn Morgan will be arriving with his wife Sybil, and he will be your replacement. You will no doubt have much to learn from each other. They are Scotch-Irish and have lived both in the city and mountains. In fact, he has been requesting a post for some time. Right now, they are in Nashville. They will blend in well here." Jacob's final words addressed David as he stepped out of the drawing room for the two mission women to come inside. David shook his hand repeatedly, "Thank you sir, thank you" Chapter 16 "BIRD'S EYE'S IN TROUBLE!" Everyone inside the mission rushed to the porch, just as the meeting had been adjourned. Ruby Mae opened the door to find a distressed Tom McHone banging on the door. "Found im in the woods, coming home from barterin in El Pano. Them Mullens boys from Low Gap snuck up on im like a fox! Them boilin mad, acause he ain't moonshinin no more, just like me! He was their main supply man too, on count of the still. Now he's done broke clean, and them three boys is mad as bears!" Tom wiped his brow, as the day had become quite warm. The temperature was "boiling" alright! "Just passin' the news. Bird's Eye and them came after me once, then Bird's Eye got religion. The doc was passin' that way, and he holped us lick those boys good! They both got away, once they was lyin' on the ground real quiet-like. Doc and I holped him get out of a jam for sure!" He became breathless as he relayed this information. "What about Truby and Caro-line?" Christy cried. "Them wimmen got kin all over Lufty Branch and El Pano. No one be botherin' them none. It's men business." Tom explained, sensing that after the almost two years of mission living, the residents there still did not grasp totally the fact that women were usually left alone, while the men made their "war parties" occasionally. Especially a long-standing issue, such as land rights, and moonshine. Sometimes it was a minor quarrel over a woman. Once in a while. "So Bird's Eye and Dr. McNeill are safe?" Alice wanted to clarify this. "Yes'm, doc is a big man! Had to hurry on to Low Gap. I was takin' in some honey for Jeb, since Dan Scott was doctorin' Clara. She felled and cain't walk too good." "Is anyone else hurt?" The doctor in Jacob Ferrand responded, as well as his concern for them. "I went an' talked to Bogg , Ault, and Bob just in case they pass through here, though. Nope, I'm fine."Tom acknowledged the concern for him. "But Bird's Eye doesn't live here anymore. Why would they come here?" David asked with an anxious voice. "Revenge. Lookin' fer a still, just in case. Acause they're mean." Tom emphasized the last word with distaste. While the men spoke, Christy slowly walked towards the gazebo, lost in her thoughts. She didn't venture far, as Ruby Mae came running behind. "Miz Christy! You cain't be wanderin' off, not now!" Her eyes grew round with fear. Christy smiled bravely at the worried girl, exuding more confidence than she felt. The heat of the day contrasted with the cold shiver up her spine she felt, making her tremble. "You all right?" Ruby Mae asked softly. Her beloved teacher was usually in so much confidence and control! "Of course, Ruby Mae! Dr. McNeill should be back in a few days. Nothing to worry about!" she replied. After they both came back inside the mission, Christy retreated to the back entrance to the supply closet, where she could be alone to think. "It isn't always about you!" came familiar words to her mind, spoken by Neil with feeling at what she perceived to be a happy occasion. For her, anyway. He was right, though, it wasn't always about her! Her girlish vanity at the time thought it at times amusing to see two grown men arm wrestling and bantering and arguing with each other. True, some of the arguments were serious issues, but other times it was more a battle of the wits and brawn. Both keen to prove their "worthiness" to her, although Neil had been more subtle about it. For, David it had become almost an obsession to win her! David had often tried to shield her from mistakes, yet Neil would stand up for her even after she'd made one. It was David that even stood against her, distrusting her, when the lie about an infatuation with one of her students was in question! Since then, Christy learned to express her interest and affection in other tangible ways with her older students. David had spoken up, Christy reflected, because he simply wanted to be first, although Neil's concern had been evident both in words and actions. Yes, she made the right choice of Neil! The events of the day eclipsed the earlier topic of David and his transfer. It comforted Christy to see that David acted better after his talk with Jacob. Now with all at the mission in a unity of purpose, all she could do now is think of Neil, a few day's journey from home. Chapter 17 After a hearty breakfast of scrambled eggs and biscuits with honey, Christy still felt fatigued. Only a few days of school left, with so much to do! As she made her way to the schoolhouse, David followed her. He caught with her and stopped her. "I'm sure he's alright!" he tried to cheer her up. Those well-meaning words surely would have carried their weight in Asheville; empty words of comfort they seemed now. Christy had seen the ugly and beautiful heads that seemed attached to the largest pine tree, with roots spreading so deep and far. Much like the everyday issues here at Cutter Gap. Again, Neil was correct when he told her that change could not be achieved all at once! Right now, the ugly head leered as it reared up showing off its roots of bitterness, lust, despair, anger and division, sometimes culminating in death. Christy kept walking onward until she reached the schoolhouse steps. "I'm only trying to help, Christy!" David exclaimed, reaching for her arm. Christy retrieved her arm. "David, I know that you mean well, but this is something I have to deal with myself. Yes, I'm a little preoccupied with Neil right now, but it's alright, really!" "Christy, I want to apologize for my behavior lately. Patience is not my forte, but I'm trying. Now that I'm engaged, I really hope that if its Neil that you want to be with, then he will be right for you. I mean it!" David looked at her intently, knowing he fumbled up his wording,"now that I'm engaged"! What did that communicate?! She looked at him and spoke with a quiet voice, "I pray that you are right about Neil's safety. Sometimes I don't know which is more difficult, the faith or the waiting!" She admitted. "I know your time is coming for better things, and I'm happy for you, since obviously, engagement is part of your plan!" He strode after her and met her at her desk. "I'm not getting younger, you know. Neither are you. Has Neil proposed yet?" Christy was appalled at his lack of sensitivity. In an attempt to remain calm, she slowly stood up and faced him. "David, he had not proposed marriage to me. Not that it's your concern, but we believe in taking our time, so we can be sure. He's had a very hard time, and I would not want to rush him, either, even I wanted to! Everyone is not preoccupied with getting married, David, as hard as it may be for you to believe!" She felt her cheeks hot as her temper rose. "Then you must be in the minority!" David was raising his voice. "That is my affair! Didn't you receive Dr. Ferrand's help at all? Didn't you come here to apologize?" she challenged. He swifly left the building, and she stared after him before turning her back on him. Once and for all! "Impatience does not allow your mind to think rationally! Lord, you know I've been guilty of it too. Help me now forgive and forget this incident about David. Amen!" ------------------------------- Six days had passed, and Neil had still not returned to the cove. "He's been gone longer before, though usually not," Alice pondered thoughtfully as she brought out a plate of sugar cookies. "MMMMMM!" Ruby Mae grabbed a few cookies. "Holped make 'em myself!" "They're wonderful, Ruby Mae!" Christy joined them, eager for a welcome respite in her routine. David entered the kitchen, surveying the cozy scene before him. "Looks good!" I got a letter from Sissel, and she has agreed to marry me!" He pulled out his letter and waved it before them. "That is joyous news indeed!" Alice embraced him. "Congratulations, David!" Jacob Ferrand shook his hand and clapped his shoulder. "I'm happy for you , David", Christy simply replied, as she helped herself to more cookies. "Can I hug ya? Oh she sure was a purty gal!" jRuby Mae gushed all over him! David had the oddest look on his face. As he pondered this remark, all of a sudden Christy began to laugh. One by one, everyone started to laugh, and it ebbed away the tension that had been felt all week. -------------------- "Whaaaa?" Jeb peered towards some underbrush in the forest, noticing an object that he knew didn't grow there! A few hundred feet away, lay a man's hat. Not too far off lay a saddlebag. "Somethin' ain't right!" Tom ominously stated to his brother-in-law. He picked up the hat. "Looks like the doc's hat! Jeb held the saddlebag and weighed it in his hands. "Sure is heavy, why would he go without it?" Both men looked at each other, trying to guess what happened. "He must have had trouble!" Tom finalized. "Yep, six days too long maybe in Low Gap. Least that old mission doctor here visitin' and we got Dan Scott! We gotta look for im!" Jeb proposed to Tom, who wholeheartedly agreed to help any way possible. With the doctor's belongings in hand, they picked up their hunting kill that included three squirrels, hoisted them over the shoulders and waded in the tall grass until the mission was in view. "Reckon we should tell 'em? Tom asked, huffing along the way. "Naw, we don't know nothin'......yet", Jeb replied, equally winded. As they came to the clearing, they deliberately chose a different way home, so no one at the mission would see them coming or leaving. --------- A brief thundershower greeted the following day, giving some relief to the parched ground. The children in school were quieter than usual, once they got over their enthusiasm at playing in the rain on the way over. It was next to the last day of school, which was later this year. Some heavy spring rains had prevented many students from attending, so school had been cancelled. By lunchtime, all the children eagerly went outdoors. Most of them were slowly starting to gather in small groups. "He ain't back yet?" Little Burl asked Isaac. "Nope. I heered that your pa and my pa and Mr. Spencer and maybe more goin' to go after doc, and do business with them mean fellers, so theys don't come here no way, no how!" Isaac whispered, as Little Burl, Creed, Sam Houston, and Isaac whispered to each other. These actions were not unnoticed by Christy. John Spencer and Rob Allen shared some words before approaching her. "Miz Christy, we know school over in two days, but we got to take care of our families. Our pa's are going out, some say to search for the doc, some say to settle this moonshinin, so the Low Gap fellers don't come here. Our pa's mean business." Rob spoke in a serious voice. "Is there something I don't know about? Tell me!" Christy felt the alarm growing inside her. "It gotta be done, teacher!" Little Burl tugged at her blue skirt. Christy looked around and saw anxious, blank expressions on her children's faces. School was often the very reason she found joy with them. It was all she could do to get through the rest of the day. "One more day, just one more day!" she thought, sighing deeply. ----------- A wonderful chicken dinner was enjoyed by everyone at the mission, and afterward, Jacob and David began to plan for Shawn Morgan's arrival . After cleaning up the dining room and doing the dishes, Christy and Alice sat in the chairs on the porch. They inhaled the sweet scent of honeysuckle and gazed at the summer flowers, including rhododendron. Twilight had come to the cove, ushering in a beautiful starry night. Brick by brick, stone by stone, Christy stubbornly held on to the anchor of her faith. "Hope is the anchor of the soul", she had once heard. Now it was even more living and real. She wondered how many students would be present the last day. After dinner, she and Alice sat on the porch, while David prepared a sermon. "Look!" Christy pointed out to her mentor, watching four fuzzy lanterns venturing out. They became barely visible on the horizon, and slowly disappeared from sight. "What does thee make of it, Jacob?" Alice turned to him in question. "Whoever it happens to be appears to be leaving, and not at a leisurely pace, either," were Dr. Ferrand's observations. The two women looked for him for deliberation, comfort, anything. A male presence such as his had been a comfort these days. Instead, he was silent. Chapter 18 Thankfully, Christy noticed that her students did not disappoint her, once again, they lifted her up! Most of the families were present for their recitations. The four men were still painfully absent, however. Christy's reading class for the women had been going well, another diversion and time well spent. It was over for the summer for some, and others wanted to continue the learning process. Opal, Fairlight, Rebecca and Mary Allen had still wanted to continue their lessons, although with summer, they would modify them, due to time restraints, Fairlight had been a shining example to them. Mary's resistance to make items for the market had melted, as she revelled in making small lacelike sachets scented with pine, cedar, and balsam, and other fragrant dried blooms. Christy sold her sheets of the material when the barter store was open. Mary had initially viewed book-learning with caution and curiosity. Rob, her son, was showing such promise with his stories. It was an outlet for him to express his ideas, and it was profiting him. She too wanted, as much as her family would allow, to sell her crafts. It boosted her self-esteem immensely! The women, like the children, had their "goals". Fairlight wanted to "touch those stars" at one extreme to other women that would have nothing to do with learning anything that had not been handed down to them in their families. Later that afternoon, some of these women gathered for their lesson. "Is there anything we can do? Do you think the men will be back soon?" Christy wanted to know, trying not to appear fretful. Mary finished reading her sentence. "Miz Christy, feudin' is one thing. Bird's Eye ain't doin' it no more, but the men gonna settle it!" Fairlight sensed that Christy was uncomfortable, so she changed the subject. "Let's see what you be makin' for your new quilt!" On familiar ground now, they eagerly fingered Mary's new "creation". All of a sudden hoofbeats startled some children playing outside the mission that had come with their mothers. All of a sudden yelling could be heard from inside. As the commotion brought them out, Creed Allen's voice rang out, "IT'S PA, IT'S PA!" The boys started running down the sloped hill as four, no, five figures made their way up the into the cove. The women excitedly started running along with their children. As they were clamoring the men on horseback, they dismounted to hug their children who came flying into their arms! Christy saw this and started running. As she grew closer, she saw him! "NEIL NEIL!" she cried, as she panted, lifting her skirts while running as fast as she could! Then she saw his face, all bruised, battered, with dried blood clumped in his hair. "Oh God! Neil!" she gasped, as she reached for him. As he tried to dismount, he fell off his horse. He clumsily embraced her, and drew in her warmth. He buried his head on her shoulder. "Watch it, now! Ruby Mae, git that other fella and Miz Henderson! No count of how long he was in that ditch!" Bogg instructed the girl. Jacob and Alice hurried outside. The doctor in Jacob took over. "Let's get him inside where I can look at him." Alice sprang into action. "I'll get my medical bag", David ran from the bunkhouse, carrying a large burlap bag used for protecting purchased supplies in the past. Today, it would help protect a man's life. As Alice and David observed Neil's injuries, he had suffered several blows to the head, and a knife wound produced blood from a nonvital area of his chest. Blood and dirt stained his blue chambray shirt. As the men and Alice helped place the bag around him, they noticed his shallow breathing, and pale, sweating face. He was barely conscious. "Get him inside! Quick!" Dr. Ferrand spoke authoritatively. "I'll examine him there!" The men helped carry him in a sort of makeshift stretcher to and inside the mission, with women from Christy's reading group and children following along. "Looks bad!" Zady whispered to Clara. "Oh my God! Tell me he ain't gonna die!" Mary came out running her hands in her hair in a nervous way. All other voices drowned as the front door closed in front of them. ------------------ After Jacob Ferrand made his initial assessment, it was decided that everyone inside would take shifts tending to Neil McNeill's needs. Christy wanted the first shift, of course! She went to the room where he was, and gingerly placed a cool, damp cloth on his forehead. It was hot, due to residing infection from his chest wound that had been produced by a knife. "I've missed you so," she murmured softly, placing the cloth and gently massaging his face. Christy's affection, and the pain medication put together made Neil feel lightheaded with pain and pleasure! "Christy?" He stirred, aware of her presence. "Yes, it's me", she replied, taking his hand. "You're burning up with a fever, but Dr. Ferrand says...." "I know what that man says!" Neil grumbled. Doctors were not always the best patients! Christy caressed his face and began to brush back his damp hair. She brought her chair closer to the bed, and reached for the water basin behind her on the table. Slowly, she began to wash the dried clumps of blood and dirt out of his hair. Then, she lovingly combed it. He closed his eyes, revelling in the touch of her soft hands. Her mere presence was a comfort to his soul, and now his body was benefitting as well! "You're so good to me, Christy." he breathed, as he exhaled. "My pleasure, doctor", she murmured softly, emphasizing "doctor". "From the moment I first saw you, I knew that you could be good for me too." he confessed. "You've helped me, inspired me so much. I don't know what I would have done without you in my life! You're good to me too!" she exclaimed with joy, as Neil had uncovered some more feelings to her. "But do you really believe I am good for you, Christy?" He strained his voice in an effort to communicate. "Sshhh!" Christy took his hand again and placed it in her two small ones, giving it a tender squeeze. Then, she leaned forward, tucking his sheet around him. He could detect a faint lilac aroma. "You must rest, Neil! I'll be here, I promise!" She still had to battle with his self-doubt occasionally. He put his hand on her shoulder as he now endeavored to draw her closer to him. "They left me for dead! God only knows....how much I....prayed....for.....", his voice faltered. She placed her arms around his neck, and snuggled as she held him close. She was mindful of her sitting position as the vacant side of his bed drew nearer. "You're safe now," she told him over and over. By sheer gravity, rather than intention, she felt her knees drop onto the bedside, Neil's embrace becoming more insistent. She loved holding him and shut her eyes for a moment. She opened her eyes in astonishment and immediately straightened herself. "Neil, we can't be like this! We...can't forget where we are now!" she pulled away nervously. "I need you, Christy, more than any woman on earth!" his husky voice ardently whispered. "Neil, please!" she cried, as she tried to hold his arms at bay. "You're weak now, and this isn't right, and you know it! It's not like we're......." her voice trailed off in embarassment. She got up to leave, she smoothed out her calico skirt. "Oh, I have to go now!" Noting her flushed face, Neil pleaded with her, as his mind began to swim with pain, fatigue and the tenderness of the moment. "Christy, no! It's not like we're what? What .....are you....trying ....to say...have I?....."he tried in vain to keep his mind clear. She remembered her conversation with David regarding marriage. Maybe Neil was not interested? But, no that couldn't be........ Christy felt her mind was playing tricks on her. She knew full well that he was vulnerable, in pain, physically and mentally making a valiant effort to recover from the physical battery as the neighboring mountain had ruthlessly ambushed him. He'd almost been shot, but Ellis decided it would be more torture just to leave him lying there in a culvert. "Christy, darling, please stay! I need you! You don't know what I thought out there for almost two days! I thought I might never see you again", his voice was filled with agony. She rushed back to his bedside, and he attempted to upright himself, as not to make her uncomfortable again. "Oh, Neil! I'm sorry I was presumptous, I know that you wouldn't try to gain an advantage over me. I know you would like to be anywhere but this bed! I'm so glad you're back, you didn't know my thoughts either! I was so worried and I tried to be so brave!" she sobbed into his shirt, as he cradled her in his arms. "I....love you....my....little one..", Neil was seized with a violent cough as the pain throbbed in his chest. "You can see now, what.....can happen...living here...." His voice was grave now. "As if I don't know?! " her emotions grappled with his statement. "Oh, don't try to push me away!" "I want what is best for you.....couldn't bear it....if you .....left me....or .....were in danger...here." Neil's speech was getting more ragged by the minute. Christy kneeled at his side, and reached over to cup his face in her hands, gazing into his hazel eyes. "Please don't ever doubt that I love you and Cutter Gap! I wouldn't , couldn't leave you! Don't doubt me, please!" she intreated him with passion. "I won't doubt you, I promise, Christy, I truly do promise you." he solemnly vowed. Reassured, as they comforted each other, she gave him one last kiss before departing. "I'll see you in the morning", she whispered. As the clock struck 9:00, Christy descended the staircase and met Dr. Ferrand making his way up to Neil's room. Bidding him goodnight, Jacob would spend most of the night with him, followed by David. That night at the mission house was peaceful again. Neil had come back to Cutter Gap....alive. --------- Upon Jacob's specifications, Christy prepared a tray for Neil's breakfast. Fortunately, his wounds were not as deep as feared, and full recovery was expected. She placed a few white daisies next to his food. She entered Neil's room, and gently closed the door behind her. Morning chores were swiftly in motion. Alice and Ruby Mae were outdoors milking the cows. Jeb Spencer and Dan Scott came up the hill. "Hallooo!" he announced his arrival. "Wanted to see doc, we did". And so it was the rest of the week, his visitors came and went, beholding their beloved doctor. Chapter 19 Low rumbles of thunder preceded the thundershower that suddenly developed. Jacob Ferrand's stay at Cutter Gap had been prolonged, due to Neil's unfortunate confrontation with some neighboring mountain man on account of an illegal moonshine business. Jacob's skills as a doctor proved to be a godsend to the cove's people. Presently, everyone inside the mission house was involved with some indoor chore, such as canning, stocking shelves, mending clothes. It seemed there was always something else to be done! As Alice bustled about with a duster in her hand, she glanced outside as the sprinkling of rain intensified. Jacob, deep in thought, arose from the dining room table, where papers were strewn about, and walked silently toward Alice. "How is thee this morning?" she spoke cheerfully, turning her head. "Oh, well enough," he replied. "The time has come for me to leave today. Neil no longer requires medical assistance, so his patients are his again! Especially with Dan Scott and his missus. I'm only glad I was able to be of service." "We are thankful for thy skill!" Alice remarked "Miss Huddleston continues to be a remarkable young lady. She is becoming a capable nursing assistant as well! No doubt Neil has been a primary benefactor of her "ministrations"! His wound was a deep one, and with our prayers and our skill, his healing is complete." He chuckled knowingly, as he had seen the relationship change between Christy and Neil. Their words and actions showed both a human and godly love as they comforted and built each other up. The elderly missionary grew serious. "They've made quite a journey together, both of them!" he noted thoughtfully "Yes, Jacob, Neil and I have mourned our loss, and life is for the living. There is no bitterness over their relationship. Their backgrounds and their age difference mean nothing to them. With David, I believe he'll find what he is searching for in Boston." Alice shared her thoughts with her friend of twelve years. Together, they marvelled at the mountains, which were now enveloped in a soft mist as dark thunderclouds hovered over them. "Alice," Jacob found his voice, smoothing out his beard. "I have witnessed here how important it is to have someone in your time of need. Have you given any thought of our earlier discussion?" he queried. "Jacob, thee continues to honor me", she smiled and nodded. "Thee gives me joy, but this is my home. If Neil's relationship with Christy grows more serious in time, I would want to be here for them. She is like a daughter to me, and I want to be a better support for Neil also. Let us rejoice in what we share together," she spoke gently, taking his hands in her own. His grey eyes were veiled momentarily. "Then I shall look forward to our visits, letters, and phone calls," he tried not to sound sad. "I'll wait for the rain to stop before leaving." His voice was all business now. As he exited back toward the dining room, she felt no regrets. "To each his own", she thought. She had decided that she would probably never marry. Not now or ever. She resumed her dusting, thankful for Jacob Ferrand and who he was to her. As she moved around the mission, she wore a peaceful, almost secret smile. ----------------------- As the sun peeped through the clouds, David accompanied Jacob to El Pano. Shawn Morgan would be coming with Ben Pentland later on that day. Slowly, David and Jacob trekked on the soft ground and began to converse together, as their ride would be seven miles or so. As they rode, they didn't see the four men huddled in the underbrush. The men were on their way toward the clearing, and their first "visit" would be the mission house. Ruby Mae, Alice, Christy and Fairlight Spencer now busied themselves outdoors with the arduous process of soap-making. Their cauldrons now bubbled with hot water as they began stirring in the lye. Their hair was now plastered to their heads due to the heat. Something made Fairlight look up. It seemed that the four men came out of nowhere! As surpise, fear, and shock came upon them one by one, Alice fought to keep her composure. "Waall, what do we have here, boys?" A tall lanky dark-haired man growled, his hand on his rifle. The three Mullens' boys, all unshaven and dirty surveyed the feminine display before them with interest. They moved in closer, as the women froze where they were. "Where's yer menfolk? What do ya know bout a still?" Pete Mullens drawled, eyeing the four females. Fairlight spoke first. "Ain't no nothin' about it!" she stated emphatically, as she looked down toward a few empty buckets on the ground. "Yer lyin'!" Garth, his older brother accused her. "We really don't know what you mean!" Christy's voice pleaded, as he shifted his eyes from Fairlight towards her. "Doncha?" he leered at Christy now, spitting tobacco from his mouth. "Aw, leave 'em alone! Yer forgettin' our real business! Garth, you always got wimmen on yer mind!" Ellis Mullens reprimanded his brother. Pete, however, never stopped gazing at Fairlight. "Waaaall, we kin come back later! Heeheee!" He had a funny smile that Christy and Fairlight for sure did not appreciate! Ellis urged his cohorts on. "C'mon! We'll find Taylor's still on our own, then we'll go lookin' for 'im! See ya later!" he bowed mockingly to the women. Sam McLean stopped them. "Hey, we'll take these 'uns with us!" He motioned to Christy and Fairlight, and suddenly lunged for Christy and pinned her arms behind her back. "I'm takin' this one!" He laughed with glee. "Dang yer eyes! Y'all got nothin' but wimmen on yer mind!" Ellis shouted, as Pete grabbed Fairlight's arm. Ruby Mae started to squeal with fear, and Alice prayed a quick fervent prayer. "God, please help us!" Alice's voice was louder than she thought, as Garth put a dirty hand on her mouth. "AAAIIIIIEEEEE!!!! Ruby Mae started to scream, trying to reach Fairlight and Christy. Garth shoved her roughly away. "Whatcha lookin' at, gal?" he snorted, as he laughed. What seemed like forever was only five minutes time since Alice prayed, and swiftly her prayer was answered. All of a sudden, shots rang through the still mountain air! Quickly running to the scene was a man unfamiliar to all. He was a husky man, with curly black hair with a shock of white on his temple. He was about forty years of age. He aimed his gun at them. "STOP IT! STOP IT NOW!" he spoke in a thundering voice. Pete looked up, holding Fairlight tightly while she struggled violently. "Who the devil are ya?" he demanded. "I'M THE NEW PREACHER IN THIS COMMUNITY!" he roared at them. Alice began to breathe more normally at this sign of help, as she grabbed Garth's hand away from her mouth. "Whosoever of ye sees fittin' to do harm or mischief to one of these will have to reckon with ME!" Shawn Morgan thundered, as everyone noticed that his speech was a curious blend of mountain and Irish. The invaders guffawed as he took a few strides towards them, unafraid. Out of the corner of his eye, three more men came on the scene, drawn by the shots. David and Ben stood by the pond, aiming their rifles. Sam turned around for a split second. "Thar's the preacher!" he pointed at David. "That mealy-mouth, skinny preacher meddlin' in people's business! C'mon men, this one is comin' with us!" He held a frantic Christy, trying desperately to break free. "NEVER!" David, without thinking, lunged for the mountain man, wanting to wipe that smirk from his face. As he punched him his face, a shot fired! "AAAAAIIIIIEEEEE!" David fell to the ground in pain, clutching his arm. "DAVID!" Christy screamed, as she broke free in that microsecond that Sam focused on his gun and not on her. She hated the sound of guns! Another shot flew right past Garth's auburn hair. "DANG, STRANGER! YER TRYIN' TO KILL ME?!" he raged toward Shawn, as he recognized him as the source. "David needs a doctor!" Christy cried, as she kneeled beside him. He was doubling over in agony. She stood up and attempted clumsily to aim his gun. Her hands were shaking! All four men laughed in derision. "Ya call yerself a mountain wimmen? Ya cain't even aim a gun!" Ellis jeered. Christy felt hot with anger, replacing her earlier fear. "I don't call myself anything at all, not that it matters to you!" The sound of gunfire now brought a few more men, Bogg for one. "You boys know who I am?" Bogg asked deliberately, slowly. "That's the squire!" Pete muttered to Sam. "Yep, and doncha be fergettin' what you been doin' Ya come traipsin' here again, and we'll cuff ya for sure. Now git before I do it now!" Bogg showed his badge of authority. Neil had been hiding, as he had come from tending Creed Allen's sprained wrist. Neil aimed his gun at the men. "You have no business whatsoever here!" he exclaimed. From a short distance, he had seen the man who was holding Christy against her will, and acted immediately in getting involved. "Git out now! Ye go home now, and no one gits hurt. God is watching ye!" Shawn shook a finger at them. "We thought ya was dead!" Ellis glanced at Neil, menacing. "How did ya get so lucky?" "NOW!" Shawn and Neil shouted at them. Reluctantly, they made their retreat, acting much like a disobedient child would do upon being sent to the corner at school! Pete spat on the ground, "we'll be bidin' our time, right boys?" "C'mon, let's go the teahouse! It's on the way home! I'm feelin' cagey!" Garth licked his lips in anticipation. "Yessirreee, some wimmen will be nice to us fer sure! Whooooeeee!" they all whooped and hollered until Bogg, Shawn, and Ben "escorted them until they left the boundary of Cutter Gap. Neil now assisted David, ascertaining his wound. "Help me, help me!" he entreated Neil. Alice draped her arm around David's good shoulder and Shawn came back to support his other side. Neil called out to Christy to get his medical bag from Charlie. As she ran to get it, all of the pent-up energy was released from being ogled and then held by that foul man. "Wall, shiver me timbers!" Ruby Mae sighed audibly. "What's that ye say, girl?" Shawn asked her, as she ran to catch up to them. "Read it in "Treasure Island!" she replied sheepishly. Shawn laughed a deep belly laugh, as he assisted David. "Ye're alright now, boy. Ye're in God's hands, ye know, AND ours! Which makes a jolly good team for the likes of what I've seen today! What a welcome indeed!" He laughed merrily, as his mode shifted to the minister that he was, quickly being able to change mental gears due to experiential knowledge about mountain life. Right away, he was thankful to help right away, in order to make himself known among "his flock". He shook his head, laughing again of the irony of it all. Shawn called out toward some thick pine trees. "Ye can come out now, Sybil!" A tall fair-haired woman of thirty-five emerged and brushed off her clothes. As everyone now was on the porch, she appeared to all as a "citified Fairlight" or a "mountain Sissel", with her wise, yet innocent ways. She ministered healing words to David as Neil began to pour antiseptic into his wound. "Ye'll be alright, now, rest easy! Don't ye be worryin' about anythin'" She had the same strange brogue of mountain and city words. She had large brown eyes, and displayed a "no-nonsense" look on her lovely face. She continued to assess the other's state of mind. "Ye alright, girl? she asked Ruby Mae gently. "How about ye, Miss Huddleston, is it?" she addressed Christy, who still had her arm around a shaking Ruby Mae. "Oh, I'm fine, really! Just a little shaken," Christy managed to nod. Her heart had been beating wildly, as she was trying now to regain her equilibrium. "You're the teacher I've heard so much about! Heard a great deal about ye." Sybil enthused, veering the conversation in a different direction. "I'll be helpin' with housekeepin' and can relieve ye for your lessons when need be. Anytime, it's a pleasure! And, Ruby Mae", she focused now on the girl. "I hear that ye're quite the cook to have around these days! Am I right?" Ruby Mae saw that she was not being laughed at by Sybil, nor Christy, so she meekly replied, "Yes'm!". "Another pair of hands is a wonder, for sure!" she regarded Fairlight now, who was making herself ready to venture on home to her family. "Be speakin' to ye soon, Mrs. Spencer!" "Reckon we will!" Fairlight's measured gaze sized up Sybil in a short time and decided that both she and Shawn could be trusted with both pysical and spiritual life in the cove. "Christy, we'll have to plan some of those classes Alice has been writing to me about. Whenever ye say." Sybil was careful not to appear overbearing, or fearful of new people. She would follow their lead, then go from there. "Absolutely!" Christy perked up now, as the two women shared some teaching topics for the fall. Funny how things change, Christy would reflect on later as she said her prayers. When she had arrived at the mission almost two years ago, she felt like "the great Christy". With her hapless schemes and plans, she had been guilty of wanting more for people than they wanted themselves. She had become more of a realist, rather an idealist. She had purpose, friends, and she was in love! Yes, life would be hard, but it would also be sweet. Chapter 20 The critical moments were over. David would survive, although he would be delayed once again. Alice had wired several telegrams to St. Giles church, David's family and of course, Sissel Jorgensen. Dusk had fallen now; its long shadows in David's room made it hard to see. "Hold the lamp a little higher, please," Neil intreated Christy, who stood beside him now. "Over this way, dear", he spoke to her, as he ascertained the extent of David's wound. He previously removed a bullet from the preacher's shoulder, and it had riccocheted through his shoulder to his back. He was in considerable pain, and was groaning. "How long will I....AAHHHHHH!" David winced in pain, as the good doctor gently assisted David on his side. "I'll bandage your arm now. Christy, please hand me the bandages and clips on that chair there." Neil motioned to her. She obeyed him instantly, holding them in her hands. All were silent as Neil McNeill's full attention was on David Grantland's arm. Christy also stared at the wound that travelled from the arm, towards the shoulder and back. She was also watching Neil's capable, strong hands as he bandaged the arm. He carefully placed the splint to give the arm additional support while healing took place. David's eyes turned from Neil to Christy, observing their teamwork. "Well, that's it," Neil paused, as he studied his work one last time. He then rose to his feet, gathering his intruments together. "I'll come first thing in the morning. Have a light dinner tonight, and get plenty of rest." The doctor admonished his patient accordingly "We'll get a plate ready for you, David," Christy offered. "Thank you," David replied weakly, observing the "we" in her offer! As they turned to go, David called out to them. "Dr. McNeill......Christy.....thank you for everything." "Thank you for standing up for me. It was a brave thing to do," Christy smiled gratefully, once again coming to his bedside. "I couldn't agree more!" Neil spoke in a gentle voice. "Christy, could you please go downstairs and wait for me there?" He regarded her in that attitude of respect that David noticed. He saw that Neil did not take Christy for granted, nor assumed anything with her. He decided inwardly that Neil really did deserve her love, and vowed to treat Sissel with the same respect. "I'll save a plate for you," Christy touched Neil's arm, leaving the room. "Goodnight, David". "Goodnight, Christy," David responded. He knew then she would not be bringing him the plate! Neil took a few steps toward the bed. "I wanted to thank you as well, Reverend.....she means everything to me," he spoke softly. "Yes, I know." David finally admitted to Neil and himself that this was the truth. "Thanks to you I will be going home soon and writing a new chapter in my life. Is Shawn here by any chance?" "I believe the Morgans are visiting the McHones' this evening." Neil replied. David nodded, and then closed his eyes. "Can you stay, Neil?" Christy asked. They had enjoyed a simple meal of ham, greens, fruit compote and a delicious pound cake baked by Alice. Alice had taken David a plate herself, and kept him company until he would finally find sleep. "I'd like that, my dear," his voice was low and husky with intimacy. It gave her a little thrill when he spoke to her that way, knowing that tone was for her ears alone. The evening sky was now streaked with orange, magenta, pink and midnight blue ribbons, as they brought some chairs over by the pond. Crickets, cicadas chirped happily, as jumping bullfrogs and water insects made little bubbling noises on the pond, shattering its glasslike appearance. No sooner than they were seated, Neil rested his weary head on Christy's shoulder, breathing in her feminine scent. "You have a wonderful shoulder to lean on," he murmured. "Yours is pretty good, too, and it's also a lot bigger and stronger. You have nice muscles, doctor," Christy demured, as she stroked his hair, and lightly kissed his forehead. She shifted in her sitting position, leaning closer to him. It was so nice to have this luxury! "I wonder how Sissel and David will do in Boston. I can't help but think about it!" she confessed. "Now, Christy,, you know and I know that they have to sort out things, just as we have. What is that? Shawn says , "let go and let God?" Neil looked up into her blue eyes. She returned his gaze, appreciating the fact that he was adopting God's viewpoints into his own. "You know, love, it may be your greatest strength to see needs and respond to them. But it can be your weakness too. Alice told me once that there is only so much I can do for my patients, and then I have to let go, and let God do what I can't. That has been one of the hardest things for me to learn." She nodded, and nuzzled her head against his chest now, as they watched the twilight fold into night. All of nature's night creatures were in full swing now, making their rhythmic, soothing sounds which served as the perfect backdrop for them to be alone together. This was one thing that Christy truly valued about Neil, to converse freely and enjoy silence without words. Resting in each others' arms was wonderful too! He drew her closer to him, as she relaxed against him. "I hate to leave you," he whispered, kissing her gently. "I do too, Neil," she breathed, as he snuggled against her, enjoying the embrace. "Every moment with you is so precious." When the chairs were brought back to the mission, they kissed several times, each time more passionate than the one before! "Until tomorrow, Christy" Neil spoke, caressing her hair. "Until tomorrow, Neil" she replied. As she watched him leave, she looked up at the multitude of stars and was positive that they had never shone brighter. "Oh ask me! Ask me soon!" her heart had wings and was ready to fly! Chapter 21 She could see the sun sparkling off the waters of Boston Harbor. In the warm summer evening, she had come down here to calm her distressed mind. Her fiance had been shot! It was only yesterday that she held the telegram in her hand, and was undecided what to do next. Sissel looked upward to study the large white billowy clouds in the deep blue sky. She loved to watch the seagulls perched on the nearby mastheads of the variety of boats. It had been less than one month that she had accepted David's proposal of marriage. Yet, they had not yet set a date! Her ashen blonde locks blew freely in the salty breeze as she gazed thoughtfully over the harbor, enjoying its scenic view of shops, the trees lined up against the wooden planks that served as a boardwalk. "The just shall live by faith", she heard Reverend Collingwood declare last Sunday. Like, stepping out into the unknown waters! Yes, she would make that trip! She simply had to spend time alone with David before he returned to no doubt a full schedule awaiting him. There were things she just had to know, before settling into Boston life together. ------------------ R-R-R-R-RING!!!! Christy answered the telephone quickly, as Ruby Mae paused to catch her breath! The ringing of the phone was always a novelty in Cutter Gap, Tennessee! "Sissel Jorgensen's coming!" The young schoolteacher placed the receiver down. "Ya mean the preacher's lady friend from the city?" Ruby Mae breathed. "Yes, and it's to be a suprise! Do you hear me?" Christy regarded the girl in a somewhat stern way. "When he is better, he will leave with her. But it's to be a secret!" "Lordamercy! I won't make one little whisper about it, I swar!" the mountain girl replied. "Will she stay for the Spencers' singin' too, I reckon?" "I don't know their plans, but I suppose they will...it will be Reverend Grantland's farewell party!" Christy told her in a hushed voice. "That is something I will tell you!" "Oh, gosh, Miss Christy! Whole lot goin' on in this place!" Ruby Mae clapped her hands in delight. ---------------------------- The train rolled into El Pano and the sight of the small train station and the post office in the barn brought back last year's memories back. At least this time she knew what to expect. Sort of. A burly, dark-haired man signalled Sissel. " You must be Miss Jorgensen, I came here to greet ye! I am Shawn Morgan, David's replacement." He extended his hand to her, and she eagerly accepted it. By now, her lovely face showed signs of fatigue and worry. "How is he?" she fearfully asked. "Not to worry, dearie. Let's get you taken care of at the mission house and you can see him soon after! He's coming along nicely, according to our Dr. McNeill." Shawn comforted her. "He doesn't know, right? That I'm coming?" Sissel wanted to know. "Not one little peep!" he chuckled. " Especially from Ruby Mae, which definitely comes in the miracle category! They both laughed, as he helped carry her luggage to a nearby wagon. She relaxed around him immediately, knowing that she had made the right decision to come. "I hear you are married?" Sissel asked him. "Yes, my wife is here. She is anxious to meet you as well. As for David, ye sure will be a sight for sore eyes!" he winked with a mischievous look. As they travelled the worn El Pano road, the dodged the mud holes, made more prominent by the frequent summer rains. It was all coming back to her now. The dirty, laughing children at school, the living smells of hay, and manure. The lovely smells of the succulent wildflowers, and delicious aroma of freshly-baked cinnamon rolls in the mission's kitchen. And of course, the chickens and hogs! She remembered the simple, country garb of the men and women here in the small schoolhouse-church. Past conversations greeted her at every turn. She made a determination that she would be more willing to put up with a few minor inconveniences until she and David could leave this place. For good. As the wagon pulled up directly in front of the mission, Ruby Mae ran out to meet them. "Oh ma'am, it surely is good to see ya!" "Hello Ruby Mae! It's nice to see you too. I've brought something for you!" Sissel stepped down and reached for the small bag in the rear of the wagon. "For me?" The girl's eyes widened in anticipation. "Ya be the nicest lady 'sides Miss Christy and Miss Billie!" "Who is Miss Billie?" Sissel inquired politely. "That's my wife, Sybil. The people here call her Billie." Shawn explained, as he helped himself to some coffee, which Ruby Mae still had on the stove. "Ahh", she nodded in understanding. Shawn offered her a cup of coffee and some apple bread. "Sit down for a spell and have a snack with us." "Oh how kind of you! I am a little hungry!" Sissel remarked, taking a piece of bread. "Where's Miss Henderson and Christy?" "Alice is in Cataleechie, and Christy is no doubt on some errand with Dr. McNeill!" Shawn replied, drinking his coffee. "She and doc are in each other's shadow a lot!" Ruby Mae leaned over, enjoying a conspirator role. "Ahem! Ruby Mae!" The new Reverend cleared his throat, gently reprimanding her. Sissel pondered this remark, then brought out some more items. "Here is a devotion book for Miss Alice, some lemons and oranges, and lemon sachets for everyone here. That means you, Ruby Mae! Here's a picture for Christy and a plaque for your new home here, Reverend Morgan!" "That's very kind of you, miss! I'm sure Sybil will find a handy place to put it." "Please call me Sissel," she insisted. "Oh preacher sure is goin' to be happy as lark to see ya, Miss Sissel!" Ruby Mae exclaimed. "He really don't know nothin'!" "I have a welcome letter for David that I want to give him personally." She said, drawing out a letter from her purse. "Can I see him now? I'm feeling so much better, thank you!" "Upstairs to the left side", Shawn instructed her, pointing the way. Sissel knocked before entering. "Come in!," a gentle masculine voice called out. "SURPRISE!" she gaily announced, taking her place at his bedside. 'SISSEL! I can't believe you're here!" David gaped at the mouth, so great was his shock! "How did....!" His voice trailed off, as they stared at each other. She noticed how pale he looked. "I couldn't stay away! Alice wired me, and I wanted it to be a surprise!" She took his hand and brushed his damp hair from his face. "MMmmm, that feels good!" he sighed with relief. "You have an excellent bedside manner!" "Thank you, sir," she spoke in a flirtatious voice. "Reverend Collingwood says I have a gift for healing, as well as music." In fact, I go to the hospital to help cheer people up that need a good word. I've been told by many that I'm good at that sort of thing, so I do it." "As your minister, I'll keep that in mind!" He spoke in a semi-authoritative voice, half-jokingly. "At least your spirits are good." his fiance noted. She noticed now that he was sweating easily, and his speech was getting difficult, with the effort. "I really should go," she spoke softly. "No, please don't!" he reached for her. "I'm fine, now that you are here!" "How you've suffered so!" she spoke tenderly, leaning over for a kiss. At her touch, his arm grasped her as firmly as he could, leaving his injured one in its prone position. "I did it for her," he spoke plainly. "There was a confrontation here, and some intruders came. I could not bear to see her being held by a foul man. That's how I got shot!" "You're so brave, David!" She spoke, as tears formed in her eyes. "Sissel, I ....about Christy..." he faltered. "There's nothing to say," she stroked his good arm. "There is! I could not for the longest time get over the fact that she would choose this life over a more comfortable life in the city. That is how we both were raised. She was and still is, a very adventerous girl, and has deep feelings for the people here. Everyone makes choices and has to live with them. I was vulnerable, lonely and looked for someone strong I could lean on. But as time went on, I knew I had to stand on my own two feet. I wanted someone to lean on me for a change!" "You don't have to say that, although I appreciate it. I can understand how you needed company. We have had this talk before." Sissel gently explained, looking into his brown eyes. "A lot has happened this year, and I'm more than ready to make this change! I'm better prepared to be a husband to you too. In fact, I have it on good authority that two people here have had many trials before they could share their feelings for one another. They had them, but were not free, nor chose to act upon them." He paused, gazing into her blue-green eyes. "I'm talking about Christy and Neil McNeill." Chapter 22 "Christy? And that charming country doctor? My, my!" Sissel exclaimed with wonder. "But.... I want to talk about us, David. We have not yet set a date!" she glanced outside, observing the sun setting behind the dark silhouetted mountains. For a moment, she was lost in the great beauty that God had provided here in this small cove. "I will always need you, Sissel, and you will always have me." David claimed, reaching for her hand, his own lip quivering with emotion. As her eyes brimmed with tears at his words, he brushed a blonde tress from her face. Their eyes further conveyed what could not be put into words. For them, that did not matter. Then, as if waking from a sweet dream, Sissel roused herself. "Oh, I almost forgot! Here is your welcome letter. I wanted to give it to you myself." She drew out the envelope and handed to him. "David, I'm so glad you are coming home! No more getting shot at, being lonely, or going hungry. You can get a proper bath, for instance! I can appreciate your sacrifices. I could never do it." He thought for a moment before answering. "No.....there won't be any of that.....but I will be on call 24 hours a day, much like our doctor here. No doubt it will an agreable lifestyle for us both, all the same. You will be busy too, you know.....ladies's luncheons..prayer meetings, and you will be great at it!" I know that I'm a lucky man!" David's long slender hands clasped her delicately tapered ones "I think I should be your wife first, David", she asserted herself. "I have asked Shawn to counsel us before we get married. I know our priorities will be important to consider since we will be in the public eye." "Yes, of course, Sissel! You are smart, as well as beautiful. The letter really lifted my spirits." He let her read it. Later on that evening, Shawn would talk to the both of them about various subjects of pre-marital counseling. Following his experiential advice as well as God's unlimited wisdom would greatly aid to promise a wonderful, healthy marriage. Now the burly preacher reached in pocket, enclosing his hand on a small object so she would not see it. "David, I thought that ye would be needin' this. God bless ye both." He embraced both of them and quietly left the room. David opened the blue velvet box and offered it to Sissel. "Sissel, will you marry me?" "Yes, David I will marry you!" She hugged him joyfully. "Oh it is a beautiful ring, you must have been saving for a long time for this!" She marvelled at the brilliant small diamond ring on its gold band, placing it on her finger."Ooooooh" she gushed, leaning forward to kiss him, sealing their engagement! " This makes my earlier proposal by mail official!" he bantered with her. "And my acceptance!" she fluttered her eyelashes at him, kissing him one more time. ----------------------- It was that time again; preparations for the annual summer singin' at the Spencer land boundary were in full swing. Fun, food, and fellowship would be the main order of the day, while struggles, hunger, pain and other troubles would magically disappear for the day. Fairlight and a few nearby neighbors were carring out pies, jams, muffins and apples towards a long table set aside for events like this one. Inside the rustic cabin, Jeb and John Spencer dusted off the fiddle and harmonica from the corner as they readied themselves musically. Music was always a forte in the Spencer clan, and others would come soon with their dulcimers and other small assorted items for music-making. Meanwhile, at the mission house, everyone was getting ready to ride or walk down toward the party site. Sissel had just finished french-braiding Christy's hair, entwining the light brown hair with a white satin ribbon that Christy provided. The Boston native stood back from Christy's wing-backed chair and gave her one last look. "My, my! It looks very pretty if I say so myself! Have a look!" Christy held Sissel's ivory mirror so she could see the back of her head. "Oh, Sissel! It's lovely, thank you!" Although there were four years difference in age, they were similar in some ways, yet so different in others. The young schoolteacher had donned a lightweight yellow and white chiffon dress with a yellow satin sash. Sissel's was more ornate; a brocaded lavender dress with a matching bonnet that she insisted on wearing to this "gala". "Sissel, Your ring is lovely! I know I said that a few days ago!" she gushed to her friend. "I know that you both will be very happy in Boston." "Do you see yourself getting married, Christy? Choosing to stay here in Cutter Gap, I mean...?" Sissel faltered, not wanting to offend her in any way. "Only God knows," Christy mused. Since she did not volunteer any additional information, the young opera singer spoke. "Do you think Dr. McNeill.....Neil... will notice how absolutely pretty you look? Going through all this work we women do!" she said, chuckling. Christy thought for a moment. "Well....I hope so.. .he'd better!" After laughing out loud at this, Sissel wiped her eyes. "I knew there was something there, Christy! I've seen how you look at each other at dinner... and breakfast...." Christy couldn't stop grinning! "Well....alright, Sissel!" "I can't see how you do it, stay here I mean. Don't you miss the theatre, plays, restaurants and tea parties?" "Not at all. This is home to me now. I'm old enough to make my own choices for my life. Besides, Sissel, you don't have to do it. Tomorrow, you and David will embark on your new adventures." Christy arose, smoothing out her dress, walked toward the kitchen and picked up a basket filled with fresh cinnamon bread, and applesauce. "Well, I'm going to go now. Do you want to join me?" Christy invited her to come along. "Oh, if you don't mind, David and I will come with Shawn and Sybil." Her voice was almost apologetic. "No, that's alright! Not a problem at all!" She wore a serene smile, assuring Sissel. "You're such a dear, Christy. I will miss you terribly." Sissel came over to hug her. " "Oh, I'll miss both of you too!" she returned her affection. "See you there!" Christy gaily stated, as she headed out the door. For a moment, Sissel stared after it. Chapter 23 From all four corners of the cove, men, women and children gravitated towards the clearing where Fairlight and a few nearby neighbors were setting ham, venison, and beef alongside various jams, breads, and vegetable dishes. As Christy arrived with her basket, Fairlight greeted her, wiping her hands on her red checkered dress. "We be about ready, Miz Christy! Jes set the bread here, and you can put the applesauce over at that end there." As she did so, Shawn and Sybil Morgan came on the scene along with David and Sissel, who kept adjusting her bonnet. The afternoon, though breezy, was still a hot one! Both men wore dark ties with their lightly-colored shirts, and Sybil decided to wear a light blue cotton dress. While Sybil took her blackberry pie over to the table and chatted there, Little Burl and Sam Houston, and a few other children gathered around David and Sissel. "Howdy, preacher!" Little Burl exclaimed. "Law, preacher! Missed ya fierce at school! I prayed real hard, too!" Sam Houston earnestly spoke. Sissel stifled a giggle; she knew he was sincere, and he was so sweet! David leaned over and looked into their eyes. "Well boys, thank you for doing that! I'm feeling much better! No ukelele for me this year, though!" "That little fiddle," Isaak McHone translated for Burl's puzzled look. Clara and Zady practically gawked at Sissel. "Sure is a purty ring," Clara studied the gem on her finger. "Kin we touch it?" "Well, uh, sure!" Sissel held out her hand. "Your hat is purdy, too!" Zady pointed to her bonnet, which was starting to itch! "Thanks girls, I'll take it off, so you can see it better." The city woman let the girls touch that too. Without further delay, Jeb revved up his fiddle with a familiar melody. The music flooded over that clearing, as the mountaineers came forward to dance, hum, and sing to its tune. Uncle Bogg sported a black derby hat with a vest that he bartered a possum for. He loved being master of ceremonies! "Come on now, dancin' goin' on here! Come on!" he beckoned to the crowd, as couples began to gather inside a circle. Ben Pentland strolled along, munching on some bread, greeting people. "Howdy.....howdy....hey Bogg! That true what I heered about the Mullens boys and Sam McLean? That the law in Low Gap got em'? Heered it from Bird's Eye hisself in Lufty Branch." The mailman asked. Bogg leaned forward in a conspirator sort of way. "Yep, and it better stay that way too! How's Bird's Eye these days?" "Well, workin' hard and livin' right!" was Ben's reply. Soon, he spied Alice Henderson in her modest Quaker attire, including her bonnet. "Hey Miz Henderson! How are ya?" "Well hello, Mr. Pentland! Happy to see thee, I am!" she greeted him in return. "Ya don't dance, do ya," Ben asked, almost knowing her answer would be no. "No, I'm afraid I don't, " she nodded politely. "But I will walk and talk with thee." So she and Ben did exactly that. After turning down Jacob's proposal, Alice saw Ben as a dear friend that she did not want to lose. His almost child-like simplicity in his demeanor appealed to her joyous relationship with God. "Come on, Bessie!" John grabbed Bessie's hand. "I have to dance with ya, now that I'm free for now!" "Oh yeah!" the mountain girl eagerly took his hand, while he led her into the circle. Outside the ring of dancers, Christy tapped her feet in time to the music. Becky and Mountie O'Teal approached her. "Kin I touch it, teacher?" Mountie hesitated, motioning to Christy's satin bow. "Of course, Mountie! But first let me sit down on this stump here." Gingerly, Christy gathered her skirt and sat down. The girls shyly touched the satin bow on her dress, and the french braid. The touches were so gentle, that she hardly felt she was touched. "It's so purdy!" Mountie breathed softly. "Thank you kindly, girls. Hope you are having fun!" Christy warmly regarded them. "Lookit Miz Christy!" Lizzie pointed at their teacher from a distance. "Yep, she's jus like a fairy princess, like Snow White we be readin' about!" Clara said. "Snow White and them little men. There was, oh, six? No seven of 'em!" Those little fellers workin' so hard and long all day!" Lizzie added. "She did the cookin' and cleanin' up, lookin' after them like young' uns!" Ruby Mae glowed at the memory. "Jes like Miz Christy holpen us!" "They coulda been Cutter Gap fellers. Glad there was no mean queenie lady to feud with teacher like there was with Snow White." Clara emphasized. "Well, that Rob sure looks like a prince to me!" Ruby Mae watched Rob play with some younger boys. "Miz Christy got her a prince though!" She whispered as the girls saw Neil draw near. As he passed by, saying "howdy", a chorus of giggles followed. Neil turned around for a moment to utter silence, before moving on, shaking his head while he chuckled. This time Christy felt a large hand finger her braid, which caused her instinctively to reach behind her head. "May I have this dance, ma'am?" He was now in front of her, bowing to her. "Oh, Neil! You startled me!" Christy gasped in shock. "Sorry about that. Now where were we?" Neil gently recalled her memory! "Of course, Neil!" She replied, as she curtsied low before him. She noticed that he wore a violet in his shirt lapel, and as always, he looked very handsome in his white shirt and brown vest. "You're especially lovely today. Not to mention your hair." He never seemed to miss anything! "Well, I wanted something different today. You look very nice yourself, doctor," she blushed. As they joined in the dancing, she loved being in his arms as he effortlessly twirled her around. "I-I'm trying to catch up to you!" Christy gasped for air, laughing at the same time. "Also, the air is quite warm," he replied, stopping to look at her so intently that she buried her head in his shirt. He gave a hearty laugh, drawing her closer. "Or do I dare think that I may have that effect?" "You know better than to ask me that!" She drew back, smiling into his hazel eyes, savoring the moment. From an earshot away, Sissel fanned herself. "Oh, I wish I had my fan! David, would you look at them?" She was glad to comment on people that she knew! David put his arm around her. "Sissel, you are the most beautiful girl here, you know. Besides, I told you so!" He nodded toward Christy and Neil, as they drew further away from the gathering. So much music, talking, laughing, and the whole ambiance of the occasion made Christy giddy with delight. "Oh, I love everything here, Neil!" she raptured, spinning around. Neil caught her in his arms, and grew more serious as though weighing some heavy thought. "Everything, Christy?" "Yes, Neil, the joy of God in this place, my friends, the music, the children, and you of course!" She enthused, "I could never leave it." "Christy, can we walk alone for awhile?" he pensively asked her. "Why, yes!" her heart started to beat faster as they walked until they heard a familiar dim roar of a nearby brook. Suddenly, Neil dropped to one knee. "Christy, will you do me the honor of being my wife? I love you with my whole heart. I promise to always care for you, and give you whatever I can! Whatever you need, I swear I will do my best to give it!" He ardently promised his devotion to her. She started to cry. "Oh Neil! Yes, yes, yes! I will marry you. I want to be with you so much! Please help me learn how to see to all of your needs and desires too!" As they kissed and held each other tightly, he abruptly pulled back. "I have something that belongs to you", he spoke, pulling out a black velvet box from his pocket to hand to her. Slowly, she opened the box and the most sparkling diamond ring was revealed, surrounded by a sapphire and a ruby. Its sheer beauty caused Christy to burst out into tears. "Ohh,, Neil! It's so lovely....so beautiful!" she exclaimed, holding it towards the sun to catch its sparkle. "Are they? How could you....afford this?" "I was thinking of St. Valentine's Day, and your blue eyes, love. Yes, this is a real diamond, as the other stones are real, just like you!" Neil smiled tenderly at her, as she dabbed her eyes with her hankerchief. "My nice little side allowance for trachoma research helped make your ring possible. Oh, don't'worry! I still have plenty of medical supplies!" Neil grinned, pulling her closer to him. "Please put it on me!" Christy stepped back and held out her hand, and he lovingly placed the lovely ring on her finger. He marvelled that the stone shapes were just right for her strong, yet delicate hand. "Oh, it's so perfect! I love it!" she gushed over and over, between his ardent kisses and hugs. "Does this mean you will stop courting me now?" she teased him, her face flushing as her heart beat wildly. "Christy, I will never stop courting you, nor being your friend, helpmate, nor your doctor either! You were definitely worth waiting for, my dearest!" Neil emphasized. Her blue eyes blazed with love for this man! "So were you! Let's tell everyone!" Hand in hand, they walked slowly back to the festivities. Decisions. Choices. To each his own. Yes, Christy and Neil could clearly see God's plan that had carried them this far, and would continue to guide their paths together. She contemplated the many choices she'd made since coming to Cutter Gap to teach, and was convinced daily that she was the one who had come to learn. She treasured her latest decision to marry this wonderful, sensitive man walking beside her now! Holding her hand once more toward the bright sun, she saw her future sparkle, much like her brilliant ring. As if on cue, Neil smiled at her, squeezing her hand tightly as they continued to walk. No, whatever shortcomings she had, or mistakes were made, she vowed never to look back, only continue to move forward. THE END
