Fanfic title: Life goes on" Author: chris turn Summery: starts when Christy and Neil go home after her accident. sheds alittle light on Neil's past, Christy' parents and other stuff Part 1 Wm. and Julia Hudelson were walking down a hallway at Asheville hospital when a young MD caled after them. "Mr and Mrs. Huddleson may I talk with you a moment. They turned to see a young doctor sporting a thick crop of riotous red hair comming toward them. "I'm sorry to bother you but durning his report of your illness Dr. Murray mentioned that an upstart, backwoods country doctor with an scottish accent was there when you took ill and wanted to treat you. That wouldn't be a tall, curley haired scott by the name of McNeil, would it?" "Why yes" William said "How do you know Dr. McNeil?" asked Julia The young man smiled and chuckled as though a memory was tickling him. "Dr. McNeil and I were friends once""Here please sit down and I will explain. My name is Micheal Mooney. I have accepted a position here at the hospital to help train new doctors. Neil and I meet several years ago in NYC where he was working for a Dr. Schuster and several other partners. They used to come fishing down here and mentored Neil through medical school. When we met I was just starting medical school. Neil had just graduated from medical school in Scotland, the first in his class. Dr. Schuster once told me that Neil had the finest natural talent for medicine he had ever met and a person like that comes along once in a lifetime. We became friends. He was always going off into the woods, every time we had a free moment, with just his fishing pole and sometimes a bedroll. He taught me a tremendous amount about medicine and was alwayg generous with us new guys. But something was always gnawing at him, I'd dont't think he was ever really happy in the city. Some of the other doctors thought he was plain out of his mind when he left to return to the mountains. We were certain that he would end up one of Schuster's senior partners in one of the most lucrative practices in the city. Now that I'm alittle older I don't think he was nuts at all. The city has become stifling and I accepted this position so my wife and children wuld have alittle more open space and fresh air. I did for myself too. Mac really introduced me to the out of doors, fiishing, camping , hunting." "Do you still coorespond?" asked Julia "Unfortunatly we has a disaggrement that was not resolved before he left and we haven't spoken since Boy, he chuckled again, what a temper. You figure an irish cathloic and a Scottish agnostic ars friends. I lit many a candle for him at St. Patricks." "Our daughter,Christy, teaches at the Mission school at Cutter Gap and knows Dr. McNeil" "How far is that from here" "About six hours by train" said Wm. "Well I must be getting back to work and I'm sure you folks have other business. Thanks for helping me to remember a really good time in my life. School was very difficult and have a fried like Neil and going out of doord, helped alot " "Mrs. Huddlesson, my wife Mary helped you with last months Hospital ladies tea." "Why yes, I remember her thoughtfulness and willingness to help. I hope we will see the two of you again soon" "Ifweither of you speak to Dr. McNeil please tell him I'm working here and would like the opprtunity to speak with him." "We will be happy to relay your message" DR. Mooney politely bowed toward Julis and strolled back down the hall. McNeil is really that close to Asheville he thought. The returned memories of their last few meeting still troubled him. They had quarreled about Neil's upcomming marriage to Margaret. Mike had felt in his heart she was definatly not the woman Neil should marry. He wondered what had happened to that relationship. I will at least write to him if I don't hear anything within the next month. He still considered their previous freindship precious. He felt alittle sad that Neil had not been part of his happiness when he married Mary and when their twins were born. Part 2 Summery: Happenings when Nieil and Christy visiti her paerents in Asheville. Pt.2 Christy and Neil sat close together as the train steamed toward Asheville. "You're trembling" Neil suddenly realized this after he put his arm around her. "I'm both excited and Scared, mother still treats me like a little schoolgril. I can stand up on my own two feet and know what I want to do with my life." "What's that sweet lass" He teased She looked up at him and in a strong, solid, unwavering voice said "I want to teach in cutter Gap and I most especially want to strand by you as your wife and spent the rest of my life with you" She scrunched up her nose and smiled at him He kissed her on the tip of her nose "It's all that I could hope and pray for" The trip was long and tireing. She laid her head on Neil's chest. their closeness gave her renewed strength. She was worried how her mother would take the upcomming news. They arrived at Christy's home in early afternoon. Both her parents were suprised at how much she has seemed to grow since they last saw her. There was a sence of confidence and well being about her they could not ignore. "William, please show Dr. McNeil upstairs to the guest room and where he can freahen up before supper." Her tone was polite but still distant. "Neil, how are you?" William asked as the went upstairs. "I'm just fine" Neil smiled as he watched Wm. navigate the stairs with minimal difficulty. William knew he was watching. "How am I doing Doc?" He smiled "I"m still doing the exercises and taking a planned walk every day as you directed" "My personal drill sargent sees to it personally" "William" They were already on a first name basis -bonded by a physcian-patient relationship begun when Wm. suffered a stroke while visiting the Mission at Thanksgiving "I think your recovery is everything we could hope and pray for. As your physcian I am really proud of how hard you and Julia worked to get you well again" "You will need to continue for the rest of your life. I know you will continue to improve because of the support and love of christy's mother." William turned and looked intently at the young doctor. "Why thank you, Neil" "Now is there something else we need to talk about?" Neil looked at the older man and smiled. "Yes there is."I have fallen in love with your daughter and want to ask you for her hand in marriage." "I cannot give her monitary riches but promise with all my heart and soul to love, honor and protect her all the days of my life" A silent prayer of thanksgiving flew from his heart. At last that was over. William sat down on the end of the guest bed. "I knew in my heart this is why the two of you were comming to visit" "there is just one thing I especially need to know, where does God fit into your palns?" Neil took a breath and said sincerely "William my journey back to the Lord's grace has been long, painful and sometimes very frustrating. Through the many prayers of christy, Miss Alice and others whom you have met I finally found my way home.I realize that my knowledge of healing is a precious gift that none but God can give. I also realized it was in His plan all along for me to return to cutter Gap and serve my prople. It's my ministry of sorts. I have come to believe this with all my heart, I also believe that I have been forgiven for my pror stubborness and lack of humility". William stood up, came across the room and warmly embraced Neil. "I would be proud to call you my son. I know that you will care for Christy as no one else can. Yes ,Neil you have my permission. Please, let me talk with julia before you tell christy" If it were possibe Neil would ahve jumped over the tallest building in asheville. Instead he knelt by the bed". Dear Lord, you continue to anaze me every day. thay yoo culd grant a sinner lik me this wish and entrust me with Christy's luv is more that I ever hoped fer. thank you" At the same time Christy was battleing her nerves as she spoke with her mother. "Father looks really well I"m so glad" "Christy", her mother's tone made her stiffen. "Why are you really here to visit" She turned and looked directly into her mother's eyes. "I am not a little schoolgirl anymore, please ,mother don't treat me like one." "I know what I want from life. I may be still young but I see clearly what God's plan for me is" "I want to marry Dr. McNeil and teach in Cutter Gap for the rest of my life" "Have you realized what this life would be like?" "Mother, my eyes are completely open, probably for the first time in my life. Both Neil and I have talked and prayed. We both feel that this is the plan that God has for us" "You two prayed? I thought that Dr. McNeil did not need or really want God in his life" "Mother, Neils return to God's grace has been a long struggle but he finally realized that his gift for healing really comews from the Lord, His profession of faith is strong and sincere" Julia looked with love and the realization that her daughter truely had grown up. "Freshen up and come down for supper. We will talk later" In her heart she knew that Christy and Neil were ordained to marry. William met his wife in the kitchen. "Mother, why the tears?" They hugged and gently kissed eachother. "Our little girl is really grown up and is ready to start her own family." "Mothers are allowed to shed tears both of sorrow and gladness, you know" "Yes I do, and so are fathers. Neil and I had a long talk. I know in my heart that he is the one who will love and care for our daughter now. their life will not be easy. Probobly not aas easy as ours was. They both have real faith and determination. God will give them what they need as he did for us. Now brush away thoses tears. We must give them our blessing tonight" Everyone met in the dining room. "Christy, please put this platter on the table. Dr. McNeil. how is your aunt Hattie? Her kindness toward me at Thanksgiving is still warmly remembered. I find myself humming her tunes from time to time. Will she be able to sing at your wedding? The realization of what her mother just said hit Christy like a boulder. She almost dropped the platter. They both started to cry and went to eachother hugging as only a mother qand daughter can do. William shook Neil's hand. "I think you have our answer" christy turned around and flew into Neil's arms. Her eyes were shining and they gently kissed" Neil looked at Julia. "Thank you, Mrs Huddleson" "No its Julia" she said s she took both their hans into hers. "You were both meant by God to be together I will thank Him daily for allowing his love to shine on you both" Summery: Niel and Christy continue their visit part 3 Neither Neil or christy are alot at supper that night. Both were almost to overwhelmed by the day's events. They started to help clean of the dinner table when christy's mother shooded them away. "You two are tired from your trip. christy maybe Neil would like to see the garden. It's alittle early for the best flowers but the sunset is beautiful for out there" Oh, Neil we forgot. Wm and I met an old friend of yours at the hospital while we were there for his checkup. his name is Michael Mooney and he would like to speke to you. He said you had some unfinished business." A look of sadness fell like a clould over Neil's face. It was followed by the realization that a friendship could be mended. He too chuckled as the memory of their freindship tickled him "Yes, Mike and I had a disagreement we did not resolve before I returned to Cutter Gap. I have always regretted it." "I will drop you off on the way to the office tomorrow morning. I'm sure Christy's mother will have her busy doing 'girl things' he laughed. Neil and Christy were grateful for the time alnoe together. "Beautiful" "Yes, mothers garden is really nice even in the early spring" "I was really thinking of you, Christy" "Oh were you now" She just got the words out before he kissed her with greast passion and tenderness." "Neil, I just can't believe that things are going so well ep with mother. I hope this is not just a dream. I don't want to wake up" "No it's not a dream. I really believe that God has plans for the both of us, together. It won't be easy but our love and faith will persevere.". Sleep came easy to all in the Huddleson household this night the sun was still trying to rise when wm. found Neil sitting on the back porch. "Good Morning, I'm not suprised to find you up already" "We do not have clocks at home. Only the sun and moon" "Here have a cup of coffee. Julia is up and will prepare us some breakfast" "I usually go to the office early today and work on briefs before antone else arrives. It helps me to focus and get things in order" "Aye I go down to the river for the very same reason. It helps to clear and focus your thinking. I hope you will be able to join me for some fishing" "I counting on it. Let's eat." After breakfast Wm. and Neil set out on foot for the center of town. "I see you tonight" "Will you be able to find the house alright form here?" "Thanks, I be fine" He walked into the hospital lobby and introduced himself to the receptionist. "Would you please tell me where to find Dr. Mooney's office?. "It's the third office on the right down this hallway" He walked slowly toward the office, seceretly he hoped that mike would not be in. the office door was open and he could see the back of a red-haired man sitting behind a desk, intently reviewing a medical journal. "I never thought you'd twake a deskjob,Irishman" the red head popped up and the big irishman stood up without turning. "I never thought you'd come back to civilized towm, Scotsman" Both men faced each other and all that come between them evaporated in a second. 'I'm sorry" They both spoke at the same time "Oh Mac, I'm so glad to see you" "Me too, Mike" "I need too tell you thast you were right about everything" 'everything?" Mike almost could not believe his ears. "Yes,everything" Margaret was not the right woman. I found that out after I returned to Cutter Gap. Unfortunatly, she died of tuberculosis last year after we had been apart for several years." Mac, I'm truely sorry" "I regretted our arguments for a long time and prayed for you alot" "You were tright about God too. It has taken me along time to realize what you were trying to tell me then. I've accepted him completely into my life and realize the precious gift I've been given" Both men were holding back tears as they realized their friendship was as strong as ever. It was Lie Miss Alice's saying about fixing fine china-once emnded it becomes stronger than ever. Dr. Mooney picked up a picture from his desk. "This is my wife Mary and our childern Shawn Micheal and Neil William. Neil looked at the picture. they are beautiful. I'm sorry I missed your wedding and the boy's birth" "Niel..Huh" "I owe you alot scotty. you taught me real medicine and introduced me to the out of doors. I can't wait until I can take them fishing and all the rest." Their hands clasped strongly and they embraced. "Welcome home, Neil McNeil I knew that someday we would meet and reconsile. Here join me in a quich prayer. "Heavenly Father , thank you for allowing Neil and I to renew our friendship. Thank you especially for bringing Your Grace into his life. I know that he will never be the same again" Amen" they both said will feeling. "Are you here to check upon your patient?" "Dr. murray called you an upstart, backwoods, country doctor you know. That's how I knew it was you" he laughed heartily. "Well yes and no. actually I came to ask Wm for his daughter Christ's hand in marriage" "that's great! Will I need to have my parents come and babysit sometime in the future?" "Yes you will. I don't have a date yet. It will be at the Mission. You know it was really Christy, Margaret's mother Alice and several other friends that really kept me going and ultimatly saved my soul. there was a point that I wasn't I was giong to continue with life itself." Mike turned around and looked intently at the tall Scotaman. "Mac there was a day I was walking past St. Patricks and felt really drawn to pray. I never knew why that happened. It was almost overwhelming. Some one needed prayer I was sure of it. Now I wonder if that was the day you were at the end of your rope. I wonder?" "Well I wound up drowning my melencoly in some local brew and had a headache for a week. thank God no one needed a doctor that night. I lucky i did't go blind" Both men were still heartily laughing when they were interupted by a medical student. "DR. Mooney, sorry if I'm tnerupting anything important" "Not at all, Dr. McNeil meet the soon to be Dr. Jeramy Sawyer" "Please to meet you, Dr. McNeil" "It's just, Neil" "This is Dr. Murray's upstart, backwoods, country doctor." "Oh, he smiled. I'm reakky gald to meet you. Dr. Mooneynhas spoken about your research to the class. I have some questions" Any time Jeramy, I'll be here to the end of the week" "Great, now I need Dr. Mooney to check my cases over for tomorrows class" "Get them together I'm going to show the doctor here our library. I'll be right back" The two MDs walked down the hall and Neil was introduced to the librarian. Asheville hospital at this time has one of the most complete medical libraries in this part of the country. "Dr. McNeil is my guest and he may have complete privledges to use the library. Please help him find his way around." Time passed quickly and Neil was deeply engrossed in some optalmic (eye) journals and text books. "We thought you'd been kidnapped or worse" Christy stood before him smiling. "When you did not come home for supper mother became worried and called Dr. Mooney. He said this was the last place he saw you. I told her not to worry I am well aware that I will on occasion have to share you with another-medicine. "I"m sorry I just became so involved with the new journals. I completely lost track of time. I am hungry. I missed lunch too" "Don't worry mother has made a plate and desert for you. Her and father had tickets to the theater and will be gone by the time we return." They left the hospital hand in hand. "Will you miss all this christy, be honest" Exasperated she turned and looked intently at him. "Neil, right now I would really like to be Home-Cutter Gap. I have no real life here now. I spent my childhood here and it was great but I'm grown up now and have a new life-one with the Mission, the chuildren and especially you. The only music I need is that provided by God's creatures in the Cove and the song in my heart And that is the God's honest truth. " Her voice was strong and clear. Neil loved how she looked at him and wanted to marry her rihjt thena and there. "Will you believeme???" "Yes. I honestly do. I won't ask you again" "Thank you" the next day Neil went to the library early in the day. Julia had "plans" for Christy and Wm. would be in court most of the day. About lunch time Dr. Murray came into the libraryand reconized Neil who was intently reading . Neil looked up and with a twinkle in his eyes said;"Gut afternoon Dr. Murray. Even us upstart, backwoods country doctors can reed you know" the older Md came over to Neil. "Dr. McNeil, I owe you an apology I was less than kind or professional when we last met. I've been friends with Wm. Huddleson for more years than you are alive. To see him so ill, I felt helpless. It's not excuse for my actions but I felt inadequate and helpless. You obviously have a gift to practice in the mountains. I also knew your mentor Dr .Schuster and remember him speaking about a young man he met and was going to help send to medical school. I never thought I'd meet you especially in Cutter Gap. I'd like to know more about this theory yuo used to help William. I'm amazed at his progress." Neil felt ashamed at his sarcasm toward the MD. "Your apology is gratefully accepted Dr. Murray. There are many references to the treatment plan i prescribed for William. Please let me see if I can find them here. If now I can send you some form home" The two doctors happily debated points of medicine for some time until Michael Mooney found them "Mac if I don't get you home your fiancee qwill be pretty angry at me. You two are supposed to come over to my house for dinner at 7 Come to think of it I will also have to answere to my wife" "I've had an enjoyable afternoon, Dr. Murray thank you, it has reminded me of my debates and discussions with Dr. Schuster. I hadn't realized how much I missed speaking with other doctors" "I too enjoyed myself Neil and congradulate you on your engagement to Christy. I've watched her grow up and wish you both the best of life together. Remember, you must get away and renew yourself intellectually every so often. Call me anytime. Good night" Mike escortred him the the hospital's front door "Now go home and get changed. I'll see you about 7 tonight" Neil happi;y and briskly walked the few miles to Christy's home. Soon they were changed and on their way to the Mooney"s "Welcome, come in I so gald to finally meet you Nril. After all that Micheal has told me I feel we've already met. Christy so happy to meet you also. your mother and I have workd on some hospital projects. I can't wait to hear more of your work at the mission." Laughter and squels of delight eminated form the nearby palor. They found Dr. Mooney sitting on the follor with two laughing red headed two yrs. olds climbing all over him. "Welcome. Look boys we have guests" The children looked up and immediatley tottered over to the smiling couple. the boy called Neil immediatly grabbed hold of the hand of the man for which he was lovingly named. Shawn put his hands up so Christy would pick him up. "Well look at that . they are normally very shy around strangers." "Michael, children know love when they feel it and are not afraid" At this time a tall young woman came into the room. "Niel,Christy please meet my youngest sister Kathleen. She has come to help with the children while we get settled here. She wants to become a teacher. Maybe you could talk to her about your experiences" "I'd be happy to, anytime" Kathleen took the boys upstairs for their bath and badtime. Mary and Mike promised to tuck them in later. The dinner was very festive with the doctors enjoying telling tales on one another to the ladies and the ladies planning for the wedding. The seeds of a very loving friendship between the couples was sown that night. This was to bear fruit over many years. Each would call on one another during times of happiness and joy stress and sorrow. Julia saw Neil walking in the garden the next day before they were to leave for home. ""I really tried to dislike you and hoped that christy would come right back home you know" she spoke softly as she approahed Neil. "I know" He smiled warmly as Julia took his weathered hands into hers. "I guess all mothers feel somewhat like this when their little girls grow up and are ready to start their own families. You see your own mortality. I'm sorry your mother can not be here during this special time of your life. I will be very proud also to call you my son" She kissed him on the cheek and gave hima motherly hug. "I thank God that you Neil McNeil came into my daughters life I know that I can trust her to you without reserve." Neil was shaken by her heartfelt words. Never had he dreamed he would receive all this love in his life. Gone forever were the lonely nights when sleep only came because of the intense fatigue brought on by overwork. From the deepest part of his hear=art and soul he thanked God for this time. "I believe my parents are with me and love Christy as much as I do" "I believe that too Neil, your parents must have been pretty special to have raised a son like you. I'm sure that God has rewarded them in His kingdom." They stood in silence for a few moments. "It's time for the ttwo of you to go home. christy will talk with Alice andFairlight tp plan a date. I will come down and help with the plans then" In his heart Neil wished the wedding was today but knew their love could be held in check fopr a little while longer. Summery: The hasppy couple return home. Neil and Dan work on ihs lessons part 4 Christy and Neil alighted from the train. Mercifully her mother had sent only one medium sized box. Drs. Mooney and Murray sent current textbooks for Dan Scott and some much needed extra medical supplies for themission. "Yo Christy and Dr. McNeil" they turned to see Dan Scott driving up in the mission's wagon . they both smiled and walked over to greet him. "Was the operation a sucess, doctor?" "Very sucessful doctor" Dan turned and looked with suprise. He realized this was the first time Neil had ever addressed him with anything close to doctor. "Congradulations to you both!!" Christy ran over to him with her eyes bright and full of excitment. She grabbed and embraced him. Forgetting himself. He returned the embrace and kissed her quickly on the cheek. He then turned a shade of red you could see even under his deep brown skin. "I'm sorry" he stammered Neil was standing next to him.."For what, Dan do you need to be soory fur. Yue are entitled to show affection as is enyone. Since our rocky beginnings, something you know that i'm surry fur and ashamed, yu hav becum a deer friend. You are a talented and dedicated medical practicioner. My friend, who is now in charge of student doctors has sent ye current books and his ciriculum for us to work at. Were even trying to see bout how to get ye sum city hospital time. Besides i trust yu over just bout anyone with the lass here" Dan's mind was swimming with emotion as he looked at these two unique individuals. He never in his wildest dreams believed he would have this kind of opportunity. This just did not happennto a black man in the early part of this centuary. He fervently hoped his father was watching now. He could hardly speak. "We'd better get going. Miss Alice has been pacing all morning. I really don't want to have to replace the front porch. boards" Christy happily sat between the two men. She did feel like odd man out though. Dan and Neil were discussing new trends in medicine and It was like she did not exhist. She didn't mind. To see her friends so excited over knowledge was beautiful. Miss Alice came down the stairs to meet them. Thank God thee have safely returned to us" She hugged them both. "Well"?? Neil suddenly became very shy and quietly said, "Everything is fine. Julia and William have given Christy their permission to marry me. The rememberence of the pasr weeks events again filled him with peace and love. "Thank you Lord. I told you Neil that all; would be ok if you trusted in God's plan" "Lets go have something lite to eat. I'm sure the trip was tireing for both of you." "I need to unpack these medical supplies. Dan will you help me. You can also catch me up on the medical happpenings in the cove. Neil and Dan went to work. Christy and Miss Alice took her luggage up to her room. Christy was almost overwhelmed by the weeks happenings. She sat down on her bed loveingly patting her pillow "I'm so glad to be home, really home. Seeing mother and father was wonderful but I know where my real home is--right here. She laid down on the bed ansd smiled up at Miss Alice.. "Miss Huddleson thee are a joy to behold" She bent over and hugged her. "We will talk later about your trip""I can't wait to hear about it""Now take alitle rest until the meal is ready" The last thing Christy headr was the beautful songs of the woodland birds. "Christy, christy" Something or someone was attempting to interrupt her slumber. A pair of warm lips touched hers. "It's ime to wake up lass and come dowm for a wee bit of food." She awoke to see Neil's smiling face and twinkling eyes. "OH my, how long was I asleep?" "Not too long, Jeb and Fairlight have stopped by. We felt you sould tell her. So come on and get up. Fairlight is anxiously pacing about making small talk" He laughed "I tnk she's afearin thayer parents didnt give ther permission. We have been very quiet and its drivin her crazy" Christy quickly arose and straightened her hair and skirt. "How do I look?" "Beautiful as always" "Thank you, I remember that when.." they both came down the stairs quietly hand in hand. Everyone in the room just kept talking among themselves. At last Fairlight could not contain herself any longer. Almost marching over to Christy and Neil she asked"Well girl, what happened??" Everyone in the room started to smile and giggle. "My parents said OK" "OH my" tears of joy for both her friends came immedidaitly to her eyes. she opened her ams for a hugh embrace. Neil moved over to the poarch railing and lit his pipe. Jeb quietly walked over and extended his hand "Looks like you got the pick of the litter ,doc" Both men looked loveingly at the two naturally beautiful women who were talking excitedly. "I think I could also say that about you Jeb" as he extended his hand. After the noon meal everyone went their seperate ways to complete various uncompleted tasks. Christy turned to see Miss Alice standing in the doorway, smiling. "I'm so glad thee has returned. I prayed that thy trip would be fruitful. How arethy parents?" Christy smiled, sat down on her bed and started to cry. Alice came over and put herarms around christy. "Child, what's wrong?" Nothing really, I'm just so happy to be home, really home here in cutter Gap. I really do not think I can never call Asheville "my home" again" Alice smiled knowingly. "I know how you feel" Christy spent the next hour or so telling Miss Alice about her parents reaction to their visit, Neils old friend and how wonderfully overwhelmed she felt. "What I really need to do is get back into school work.Do you think that I could offer some short summer lessons??" "Let's talk about it later, most families need their older children to work in the fields and gardens durning the summer. We muight plan something for the little ones. this might help the parents while they are working on their gardens and such. but first you need to start planning your wedding. I suspect it will be the biggest celebration this cove has ever seen" Christy blushed "Now really Miss Alice" Neil and Dan were so deep in conversation they almost rode past the mission carriage without acknowledgement. "Whoa there" David called to the horses. "Welcome back, doctor, are congradulations in order?" "yes they are reverend" Neil responded honestly but knew his answer cut into the preachers heart. Rose was sitting on the side of the carriage nearest Neil. She motioned him over and gave him a grienly kiss on the cheek. "I'm very happy for the both of you. Father will be also." David extended his hand" I'm happy too, really" Neil reached over and warmly shook the reverends hand. The barrier between them was becomming weaker and Neil hoped someday to call the reverend by his given name and maybe they could be friends. "We will visit later. Dan and I have alot to catch up on" The carrige moved on its way to the mission. David was very, very quiet. Rose slipped her hand into his. "ARe you ok David??" "Very ok, Rose. I'm really happy for both of them" He squeezed her hand and looked into her eyes."I am very thankful that you came to help at the mission" "and also into my life" He stopped the carriage and kissed her for a long time. Dan was actually nervous as he discussed his cases with Neil. This was the first time he was the sole medical practicioner in the cove. He had prayed that nothing overwhelming would happen while Neil was gone but secretly hoped to show him that he could handle things when Neil had to be away. Neil smiled as he reviewed with Dan. He really enjoyed teaching the talented young man. After his visit with Mike and Dr. Murray he really did feel renewed. He felt again that his service here did count for something. He also made himself a personal promise to do what the elder MD had suggested. To take time away ffrom his practice and renew himself intellectually at least once a year. "These books are Beautiful!!! I can't believe they are mine now." "We'll need to set up aschedule of readings" "These plans from Mike should help. Mike is going to follow up on getting you some intern time too. You probably will need to go the Phila or NYC. I'm sad and ashamed to say it but the southern hospitals will never let you intern here. Mike would take you on as his student but his board of Directors won't. Christy's father is strong willed and would like you to come but he is only one man and i don't think he could sway the rest of them." He punched the table top so hard it left a dent. "It's so unfair" "Doc, Neil please don't get so upset you hurt yourself. I don't want to have to practice on my mentor. it would be too nervewracking. I keep hoping and praying there will be true equality someday. But look how you, Miss Christy, Miss Alice and especially your Aunt Hattie have helped me. This is more than i ever dreamed. I will never forget it. Why even the people in the cove are beginning to trusr me. Why this week old man Snyder left me examine his daughter without holding onto his gun while i was there. they even invited me to eat with them. I'd say that is real progress. And, he smiled ruefully, No one told me they would wait for help until you returned or did not come because they knew you were gone for the week": " Congradulations" you have over come your first trial of fire. Now don't get tu cocky. The folks here test you at every turn. You'll do Dan Scott. Yes I du tnk you'll do fine. "This call for something special" Neil pulled a mason jar off the shelf. It contained a light amber fluid that shined in the sunlight. "This is some of the best shine ever brewed in these parts. I do not imbibe very much. this was given as a thank you i just cud nt turn it away." He took a short sip Dan was not sure about accepting the drink but did not want to appear ungrateful. he took a very small sip. "Wow you sure weren't kidding" the drink gave him a warm feeling inside his gut and then threw a punch that almost had his eyes crossed. "Be careful bout what you accept round here. sum of this stuf culd make ye go blind." Neil laughed "DFan I'm glad you put up with me for the first fue months.I'm really gld yer here. I know i kan trust yu with my patients." They discussed medical topis until the moon was way overhead of the cabin. After Dan left Neil enjoyed a short smoke on his pipe. He looked up at the moon and the bright stars" "I wonder Lord what you have in store for us? I have faith now that christy and I can handle anything. You are always with us and will never give us more thatn we can handle" He was so glad to be in his own bed that night. He dreamed of the time he wouldn;t have to sleep alone. summery: another trial by fire part 5 Early that next afternoon Jeb Spencer quietly came up behind his wife and hugged her tightly. Fairlight turned around and gazed into his eyes. "I have always loved the way you feel when we touch, you know right from the very beginning. He smiled. "Yes, i felt the same way too." This was a rare moment for the two of them. with so many children it was very difficult to steal a private moment together. He kissed her and started to draw her closer whn a voice rang out. "Are you kissing mom?" Yes I am john. when I saw your mother's natural beauty I just couldn't help it" "Someday I hope you find a lady who will insprire you the same way." "ARe we going fishing?" "Yes just the two of us. Go git the rods and stuff. I need to talk to your mother abit" Jeb had decided this afternoon he needed to spend some time alone with his eldest son. He needed to discuss future plans with him and anfd find out how serious he and Becky were becomming. "I told Neil he got the pick of the litter with Miss christy. He reminded me that i had beat him to it along time ago. You know ,he was right." He kissed her tenderly again."I just hope that they have the kind of love we have" "I think they do. Neil has given so much and also suffered so over the past few years. It's about time he was rewarded with alittle peace and happiness. His return to god's grace won't hurt either." "Amen to that. Well i see our son is more than ready to go. We will be back before nightfall with tomorrows supper. I truely love you, Fairlight Spencer." She watched wiht love as her son and husband ambled down the trail deep in conversation . Pick of the litter huh. She and Neil had been childhood frienrd. actually more like a brother and sister. Neil had no siblings and she in her childish ways, had mothered him like sisiters do durning their growing years. She knew early on that he was meant to do something special. He had a hunger for real book knowledge that was uncommon among the mountain folk. He was one of the few from his generation that could readand write letters and put figures down on paper. Both his parents could read,a feat unsurpassed at that time in the cove. Some folks thought he was foolish for wasting time with such "noncense" only she really knew how little sleep he survived in order to keep up with chores and quench that seemingly neverending thirst. Fairlight was now beginning to understand. Christy was teaching her to read and write. Neil had tried once top teach her but her father put an end to that real quick. "No girl of mine is going to know more than her daddy" The words still stung her spirit but she had forgiven him along time ago. Marriage and a sucession of children had banked her dream like a smoldering fire. Christy rekindled that spark with such intnesity, she was secretly afraid. the more she read the more she wanted to read. ' Even jeb was becomming intrested. She felt how he watched her when she read to him and the children. She would ask him if he wanted to try when they returned. Rose was happily and busily making supper when christy returned from the schoolhouse. She still had some cleaning up to do after this years classes. " How can I help ?" "I am just so happy to be home" Christy's heart was alive with a song of its own. the two woman had become very close durning the short time Rose was at the mission. they treated each other like sisiters. "There is really nothing to do right now. that is unless Dan and Neil stop by" she smiled and her eyes twinkled. "Dan and Neil could be deep in lessons for several days. they might even forget to eat if you could imagine that. No Neil will move the lessons to the stream and catch dinner while they talk." "oh christy, I am so glad that God put my name in Neil's ear when you needed help after Miss Ida was massied and left for Calif. you are so right about this place. I feel a real sense of belonging and purpose here. When father decided to remarry I felt like a useless, extra wheel after taking care of him for so long. My stepmother is wonderful. she has never made me feel unwanted or in their way ever. I am old enough to understand my fathers desire to make a new klife for himself but I still felt alittle abandoned too. Everyone here has made me feel like a part of your family right from the start." "Especially David" Christy chuckled "Yes, in such a short time he has become very special to me" admitted a blushing Rose. "Rose I am so happy for you. when I first came here Davis was like a beacon in the fog. I'm sorry our relationship did not work out like he planned. I know we have both matured because of it. I know Neil and my's developing relationship and engagement has hurt his very soul. I love David but I don't think I was ever in love with him. I hope that someday he and Neil will become friends. I know Neil would like it alot and we have even prayed about it. IT's is truely wonderful that God has brought us all together. He amazes me every day and I am always wondering what the next blessing will be." Rose and christy happily spent their dinner hour discussing the wedding and Rose's plan for the kitchen and house. "teacher, miss Christy, Miss Rose please help me" Both woman jumped up at the call. John was half walking, half carring his father toward the mission. A bloody hankerchif was bound tightly aroud Jeb's scalp. "PA slipped on a rock while comming outta the crek. He wouldn't wake up for a bit. I tried to stop the bleeding like doc showed up. It's helped alittle. Pa thinks I'm grandad. we were close so i brung him here." "Go run to Doc McNeil's cabin. He and Dan are there I think. If not do to Dan Scotts. They helped Jeb into the mission and laid him down on the sofa. the bleeding had started again form the head wound.Rose went and retrieved extra bandages form the downstairs closet." "Rose -Go and get Fairlight she needs to be here." Both took off running as fast as they could. "DEar God please do not let anything happen to this man. He is a good neighbor, hausband and father. He is needed by his family. Please let me help him until Dan or Neil gets here." "Momma, what happened" Jeb whispered "Jeb, its christy, you fell while fishing. Please relax you will be ok" He drifted in and out of consciousness for some time. Mant memories were spokenof though they were not in any kind of understandable order. She heard footsteps on the porch "Neil, Dan We're in here" she called excitedly 'It's only me" Alice called. "Please come quick. thank God youcame home early" Sensing the panic in her voice alice rushed up the stairs. Christy repeated what had happened . Alice quickly efficiently checked Jeb's breathing and pulse rate. She also inspected the wound and bandage. "Well done Miss Huddleson. the bleeding seems under control. We will just have to wait for the doctors. Lets get some water boiling and the instruments ready. The wound appera too large to heal on its own." Jonh made the run to Neil's cabin in record time. The sound of his call and falling up the cabin stairs brought both men quickly form the lab. "PA hurt real bad he fell while we were fishing and hit his head. "We were close so I took him to teacher and Miss Rose. He couldn't speak any more and could barely stand up. "Git ma bag while I saddle up the horese!" Neil made john follow him out to the small barm. "Cud yer father speak to yu" "Yes but he wernt makin no sense. He kept akin me to hav grandma cook the fish. Doc i was scared." "Yu done good, john just what yer father needed" "Now go git yer mother" "Miss Christy sent Miss Rose for her. Shethought I would get to you faster" Always thinking she was. Neil smiled at her memory. In a very short time they were saddled and gallopping toward the mission. "Fairlight" Rose was thankful she had not gotten lost. She has only been in the cove a short time but had visited thenSpencer's often. "What's wrong Rose?" Years of children's call had attuned her ears to the excited tone of Rose's voice. "Jeb fell and hurt his head while fishing. John brought him to the mission and then went for the doc. Christy said you should come." "Children, come here-Now" Fairlight used a tone that immediatly brought the childer to her side. "Your father is hurt and at the mission. Gather up your stuff and come on Is he alive?" "Yes, he has a large cut on his head and is not talking sense" "YEs Neil would take good care of him. they too had been friends their whole life" Neil was glad to see Alice when he arrived. "Where's Jeb?" "IN here" He rushed to his friends side and started to examine him. He then stood up. "Dan I want you to handle this case completely. I'll be here to help only if yu ask or I see you are heading in the wrong direction in treatment. It's the only way you'll learm" Dans suprise was short lived as new found instincts took over. Christy went out on the porch to wait for Fairlight. "where is he?" Fairlight ran up the stairs and took a deep breath "Is he still..?" "HE's alive but disoriented, Neil and Dan are here caring for him" She was somewhat supried to see Dan completely caring for her husband. Neil caught her arm and drew her to him. "It's the only way he'll learn. I;m rite her and will nut ley anything happen. Trust me...us" He tightened his grip around her waste to comfort her. he too had felt like sibblings during those years. He had stood witness for their marriage and cared for all the children, sometimes staying up all night with them. They were family. News of the accident spread over the cove like wildfire.Soon all the windows and doorways were filled with worried neighbors. Jeb was one of the most well like and respected men in the cove. Dan quickly and efficiently assessed his patient. He made ready to sew up the very large 6-7 inch laceration on the scalp. the whitness of the skull bone was in contrast to the bloody bandage. Neil left Fairlight's side and moved closer. "just feel the bone for any irregulaities then yu cna sew it up. Can yu see the didderent tissue layers. you'll need to sew each one up seperatly. I'll help keep the bood out of the wound." "Thanks, it must be tough doing this by yourself" "FAce and scalp wounds are always the worst" Very good" AS Dan finished the first tissue layer. Jeb was beginning to wake up and talk more clearly as Dan finished closeing the wound. HE wiped his brow and surveyed his work. He was proud of himself but very drained. Rose came to the rescue with the offer of a drink and a bowl that Dan could wash up in. He walked over and knelt by Fairlight "I believe he will be fine. I want him to stay here for a day or two so Doctor McNeil and i can keep close watch. I promise I won't let any thing happen to him I can prevent. I'll be sleeping here with him tonight." Fairlight took his hand into hers. "Thank you for taking such good care of my family. (she was rememberin how unselfishly Dan had cared for Lulu even when they weren't friends) Miss Hattie was right these are a healing man's hands. they hold a special gift from god. just like someone else I know. ?Her other hand lached onto Neil' I'm going to sit with him awhile and then take the children home. I trust the two of you without Question" "Why didn't you take care of Jeb yourself, Doc. It was somewhat of a question, somewhat of a challange. "Dan Scott is a talented young doctor. He needs to gain confidense in his ability so he can go backmto his people and fulfill God's plan fer him I new I culd trust him to care for my oldest friend." There was a tone of finallity in his voice and uncle Bogg just knodded. "Good nite Doc and to you too Mr scott" he tipped his hat to the young black man.. Neil retreated to the far porch and lit his pipe. christy looking worn out brought him cup of coffee. "Thank yee lass. " He gentlly kissed her as she handed him the cup. "Will he he ok?" "I'm pretty sure. He's got a bad concussion and it mit be a few days til he ken think straight. He knoes Fairlight and the kids, so that's a good sign" "People were talking about wht you let Dan take charge" "I 've alreadt handled that with uncle Bogg. I'm sur my answer will git around. Dan is stil in the process of gaining trust. Trust can be a very fickle thing" Summery: misc happenings, neil and david confront each other pt 6 Jeb;s recuperation was moving along without any problems. Dan would not allow him to return home until he could sit up without any headache or dizziness and especially, eat or drink without becomming ill. He had spent almost a week at the mission and was clearly itching to go home. He was sitting on the mission porch when Neil rode up. "Yer lookin mighty fine the morning" "Jeb looks around as if trying to find someone "Where's my mother hen????" Neil laughed. Dan has been in charge of his care since the beginning and was almost overpowering the healing patient. "I thought you two needed a rest from each other so I sent him to see some patients..on the far end of the cove. He won't be back until nightfall" "Thank ye. He's a real nice fella and truely a healing man but even Fairlight doesn't hover that much" "I don't know about that, Jeb. Dan feels responsible for you're getting well. He promised that beautiful lady of yous and I don't think he takes promises lightly. Bear with it. He'll ease up as he gets more experience and his confidence grows" Rose came out onto the porch. "Oh Dr. McNeil, can I get you a cup of coffee or something to eat?" "Coffee only Rose I've already had breakfast. I've come to take your patient home" "Oh, how wonderful. I'll pack up your stuff Mr. Spencer while you finish eating" Jeb lookes at his old friend. "I can really go home today, now?" "Yes I asked Dan if I could take you home. He Will be stiopping by on his way home tonight. Now here are the rules. No heavy work for the rest of the week. There's enough firewood at your place for the next two weeks. Dan and Tom cared for the bees yesterday. He said they should be ok for several days. And No fishing in the creek, only from the bank. Here's something for dinner tonite." Neil opened his creel to show him four beautiful large trout. More than enough to feed the family tonight. "I only want you to take short walks for the rest of this week and Not alone. you are still alittle unsteady on your feet. The sutures will come out tomorrow and Dan will see to that. Any questions???" "Nope, really Neil the best medicine for me is to be home with Fairlight and the kids. Except fer the first nite when i was out of it i haven't slept worth a darm. Something's missin. You'll see" He chuckled Neil really did''t hear much of the conversation. He was looking up at the window of Christy's room knowing she wasn't there. After it was certain that Jeb would recover Miss Alice felt comfortable to travel to Cataleechi. They were expecting their first full time teacher in the fall and she wanted to make sure preparations were moving ahead. Miss Alice had convinced Christy to make the trip with her,Alice felt that she needed time away by herself without the disraction of Neil and the ever growing burden of David's refusal to accept their upcomming union,. "The new teacher will be spending some of her summer here to get to know the area. She will in that sense have an easier time of it than you,Christy. I would really like you to come with me. You will be an invaluble resourse and can answer Miss Bcky Carter's questions honestly and experience" Christy was thrilled. She was feeling alittle off kilter thease past few days and actually welcomed the chance to leave the mission. David had been polite but very formal and distant. Hadn't he wished them well?. At least that's what she thought the reportrd handshake with Neil ment. Oh well she would have to sort this out with him later. Ruby Mae hummed the wedding march Every time she came into a room with her. She was sick enough of it to bann its playing at the wedding. Neil was saddened alittle at her announcement. He even pretended to pout alittle. He was becomming used to her company. Suprising himself with the realization he was just not complete without her. "HEy doc, Neil" the voice brought him back to reality. "Boy do you have it bad" "What do I have?" "Love, true love that's what. you were lookin up at that window like a lovesick schoolboy" Neil blushed and started to laugh. There was certainly nothing to hide between thaeas two men. "Well you know how happy I am fer you. Sorry to say it but I told you Margaret was not the right woman for you if you planned to stay home. I'm sorry she took sick and died. The Lord will give her peace. I know we believe that. But you need to think aabout the here and now. You deserve this love that's come yer way. You've been helping everyone, now its time for alittle happiness fer yourself. Christy is a wonderful lady, just the one to share these feelings with. Let me tell you it just gits better and better. At least fer us. Life is not easy but with the right loving partner at your side and the Lord's love to help, you can make it through anything. Can we go home now" Jeb put his hand on NEil's shoulder both to help him stand and to . reinforce what he just said. "Ok, I can see you're really ready" David chose this moment to come onto the porch. "Good morning, reverend, I've cum to take yer patient home" "that very kind of you, doctor. I'm glad you are well enough to go home Mr. Spencer. David's tone was polite well almost polite but definatly aloof. Neil shrugged it off. David would have to work out his feeling by himself just as he had. Hadn't Rose eased some of his pain? He would talk to her privatly later. Neil had known Rose Cambell for many years. Her father Ross had been a friend and schoolmate of Neil's mentor Dr. Schuster. He had worked with Ross several times and has been visiting when his wife, Rose's mother had died suddenly during her ninth month of pregnancy. He remembered that night. Sitting up holding a very confused, angry, scared crying teenager whose heart was broken. She had always treated him like the big brother she never had after that.. "Pa!!!" that sound was music to Jeb's ears. All the kids came running followerd by Fairlight. Neil had not told her he was bringing her husband home when he stoppped by earlier. He wanted to suprise her and the kids. Fairlight almost floated to prince's side and helped her man dowm from the saddle. "I can't believe you are really home. thank God" "Yes and thank the two best healing men around." The children crowded around him "Kid's your dad still needs some rest, ok. Jeb, john has done a good job as the man around here while you were gone. He's the one who helped the men get things in order. You can really be proud of him. Fairlight I've given him the rules and Dan will stop by on hia way home tonght. Any questions?? "Will you stay awhile??" Fairligh smiled in graditude toward the man on the horse. "No, thanks, you need some time alone. Take care and Call if there are any problems, Ok" Jeb was shaking his son's hand "Thank ye son. I'm really proud of you" John was beaming. "He then turned around and looked intently at Neil. "Remember what we talked about ,you need a date..soon before you bust!" Fairlight looked questionly. Neil smiled and lightly laughed. "Fairlight, Jeb can fill you in. Good bye" He decide to go by his cabin before returning the extra horse to the mission. Yep they must talk when Chrisy and Alice return from their trip. Back at the mission Rose was cleaning up the extra room they used as a sick room. David walked by in the hallway. "Rose, would you like to go for a picnic??" "Why yes that would be nice" She turned around so David would not see her the expression of her face. She was blushing and knew it. At noon Ruby Mae was hunting for Rose. "The preacher is looking for You, miss Rose. He wants to take you on a picnic. How romantic. Are you courtin???" "Ruby Mae ,please. Mr Grantland is Just taking me for a picnic. Up by the schoolhouse" She hoped this fact would infer that they would be in a very public place and head off the young woman's imagination especially when it came to man-woman relationships. "Yes mam. Will you tell me what happened when you return??" Rose didn't answer but went out on the porch to find David. They had a wonderful time picnicing in the meadow by the school house "Rose, you have become very dear to me over the past two months. I weas not sure I would ever meet another woman I could care for. I really think God meant for us to meet at this time." He was blushing and could bearly find his voice. Rose put her hand on his. "Yes ,I believe you are right. I'm so glad that God whispered my name in Dr. MCNeils ear when you needed help here at the mission (David grimaced to himself at the mention of the doctor's name) With father remarried and expecting a new baby this was just perfect. And she added I, too am very glad we met" They happily walked hand in hand back to the mission. All Ruby Mas could get out of either of them were smiles. Over the next week David and Rose spent many quality hours together. He helped her with the household chores and she was a sounging board for his sermons. Rose felt sure David and her were meant to be together. Oh how she wished Chirsty would return. She needed her 'sister' to help sort out her thoughts. Miss Alice and Christy were happily on their way home. For the unteenth time Christy wanted to know how long it would be until their return. "Miss Huddleson, we will get there when we do. Dose thee have an important appointment??she teased. She knew that Christy missed Neil and was anxious to return.Thay had talked alot durning their time together. Oh how she wished she and Margaret had been able to communicate like this. She just thanked God for Margaret's return to Grace before her death and the chance to be Christy's friend and almost serrogate mother. She would try not to make the same mistakes as with her biological daughter. "Not really,Miss Alice I just want to get home" "Don't fib, God hears you. You are in love. wonderfully in love. Enjoy the Gift christy. Neil is not the only one who needs to learn how to accept gifts." Christy smiled. "Thank you Lord for our friendship" she thought. How sad that Margaret was unable to have the relationship with her mother as she had. "Please Lord" she silently prayed. "Let Margaret live for all times in the light of Your love and peace. Amen" They were home a day early and no one except Ruby Mae was at the mission when they returned. "Well, christy we are finally home. I for one am going to take a nap after I unpack and we care for the horses" "I'm going to unpack too and then go make someone we know a home cooked meal as a suprise. "Take care you do not exhaust yourself. We have been on the road since sunup" "I'm fine Miss Alice. I can't believe how much energy I seem to have" Alice smiled. What a wonder youth is especially during that special time when you have someone to love and care about Christy unpacked and found Ruby Mae in the kitche. "Where is everyone??" "Oh welcome back Miss christy. the preacher and Miss rose are on another picnic. they sur been spendin alot of time together." " well now you leave them alone Ruby Mae do you understand??? Do we have any leftovers for dinner?" "Yes, actually we have enough for two nights. With you and Miss alice gone the doctor doesn;t stop nearly as much. Mr. Spencer went home today so there haven't as many mouths to feed. I recon Miss Rose was going to use this stull up tonite" "Good, I'm just going to take enought for two" "Where are you going with the food Miss christy as if I need to ask?" Christy tried to contain her excitment as she rode up the mountain to Niel's cabin. She had not been able to sleep well over the past week. She knew he would not expect her home until late tomorrow. She hoped that he would be at the cabin and also hoped she would be able to really suprise him with the meal. No one was home at the cabin when she arrived. She put buttons into the small outbuilding so the suprise could be complete. Boy this is really is a man's cabin she thought. the cabin was as neat and clean as one could expect a bachlors place but definatly lacked a womans touch. I hope to change that soon she thought as she set about preparing supper. Meadow flowers were place alround and all the doors and windows were opened to let the sweet smell of summer inside. Neil's mind was definatly somewhere else as he rode toward the cabin. He was tired and well lonely. there was definatly something now missing in his life and his heart yearned. He knew she would be comming home tomorrow and wished the time would pass quickly. A wift of smoke caught the attention of both his nose and eyes as he rode up. Who would be at his cabin today? As he rode up christy head the hoofbeats and her heart did cartwheels. She came down the steps beaming. "Suprise" The very next thing she knew she was being picked up by two strong arms and squeezed tightly. The intensity of Neil's kiss almost overwhelmed her. "You're home??" "Yes, we finished and I, we wanted to well needed to return. I brought something foe supper. Are you suprised??" "Absolutely. Let me feed the horses and get washed up" They enjoyed a simple filling meal together. Afterwards they went out onto the porch to talk and watch the sunset. A thunderhead was beginning to form over a distant mountain peak. Summer: life continues Hi again it's Still... raining in the poconos. IO'm listening to Prarie Home Companion and working on this story. doesn't get too much better. Just for whatever. In my stories these are the ages I see the characters. Christy is 19-20 Alice must be 50 or so David is 26 i think someone mentioned this age Rose is 21. i think of her as 16 when her mother died. Neil if he went to scotland to school at 17 or 18. even back then it was at least 6 to8 yrs to just get through med school. (26) spent a couple of yrs. in NYC (28) came home and spent time with and then without Margaret5 yrs. (33) that's how my story line goes. Jeb and Fairlight - 36 and 34 yrs. hope this helps with the storyline. I hope I can keep track of this myself. part 7 Neil was telling her about his week and his intresting medical cases. "LAss its time ye were getting home. there is a storm abrewin and..." He then realized that she was asleep, exhausted on his shoulder. A large thunderbolt flew across the horizen and the rain was sweeping through the valley He knew of her inner fears and that it would really not be safe to travel down the mountain tonight in a thunderstorm. He gently carried her upstairs to the bedroom. She never woke up or really knew she was moved form the porch. He lovingly covered her with a beautiful hand made quilt. This was one his mother had made. Aunt Hattie had kept it until his return fron Scotland. More than anything he wante to lie down on the bed and hold her... forever. Witha deep seated sense of respect he gently ran his hand through her hair, which has down not like she usually wore it, and carefully so as not to wake her kissed her good nite He made himself comfortable on the small bed in a room off the kitchen. this was the room Christy had used after the shootong accident. He had built this room onto the original cabin just so he could observe patients as needed. the sun streamed brightly through the upstairs window. Funny, she thought sleeply, the sun usually doesn't wake me. All of a sudden she became wide awake! :Where am I?" In a moment she was awake, wide awake. the last thing she remembered was Neil talking about his week and how comfortable a fit nher head made on the side of Neil's chest with his arm around her. "I spent the night at the cabin!!!" ran through her mind. she jumped up quickly and came slowly down the stairs. "Goot morning, sleepyhead" "What I.." she stuttered as he came over to greet her with a big grin. "You were exhausted and fell asleep on the porch while we were talking. I wasn't going to travel down the mountain in thaty storm. Don't worry I slept in the extra room. did you sleep well. You can close your mouth now." She hadn't realized that her mouth had droppped open. still somewhat flustered she came over to the table. "Why yes, i slept well, very well. I need to get back to the mission before someone misses me" "They've probably already have. Her sit down and eat something. I'll drop you off on my way to Dan's" They did not talk alot on the ride to the mission. Exactly what was she going to say to Miss Alice?? Christy was just going up the mission staris when Miss Alice appeared. "I was just about to start a serch party for you Miss Huddleston" "I..." Neil rode over to the bottom of the staris. "Alice, the truth is she was doing me a good deed by making me a hot home cooked meal. She was exhausted and fell asleep. I did not want to risk comming down off the mountain last nite in the storm." He was grinning and then his tone was serious "I was the perfect gentleman. I would never disrespect the lass or go againest her beliefs. You know that, Alice" "Of course I do Neil. Now go take care of your patients. I take care of christy's unnecessary embaressment" She smiled. "you two must pick a date for this wedding1" She waved as he rode off. Neil spent the morning and early afternoon visiting patients and working with Dan on his lessons. Late in the afternoon he went to his special spot to fish, relax and think. "Hey there I need a big brother to talk too. Know where I can find one?" He turned to see Rose Cambell standing on the stream bank. "Weel how did you find this place?" "Christy brought me here once. She said it was one of the most peaceful places she has ever been to" "Will I do as the big brother?" She smiled. :I remember a very sad ,scared, confused young lady you held all night long and talked her through one of the saddest times of her life. I'm not sad anymore, not scared either but maybe confused. David is becomming more than just a friend or co-worker. I'm not sure if I should stay and continue with David or go back home. I've prayed for guidence and, wee, I just need someone to talk to. Christy hasn't been home and she seems preoccupied toda. I didn't want to burden her right now" Neil came out of the stream and laid the fishing rod down He looked at her intently and loveingly "Follow your heart, little sister. don't let a chance of real love go by. I almost did. David is a good man. I wish we culd be friends but right now he can't overlook what he thinks I did to him. I spent too many years in a darkness of sorts., The saddness and loneliness can be overwhelming. Please don't let that happen to you. You deserve the best and David can be that for you. Your father will support you and be happy for you if you want to develope a relationship with David. I'm sure" "Thank you, Neil. Yes I will follow my heart. I believe that God has a plan for me and David" She gently embraced and kissed him on the cheek "Now when are you and Christy going to set the date for your wedding?" She gave him another smile and headed up the bank toward the mission All David saw was Rose heading down to the creek. Now why would she be going by herself to the stream he thought By the time he arrived at treeline Neil's and Rose's conversation was over. all he saw was her leaning over to embrace and kiss the doctor. Well not again, the doctor is not going to interfere with this relationship. His thoughts were bordering on the irrational as he stormed toward the unsuspecting fisherman who had returned to the center of the stream. Rose was up on the bluff overlooking the stream when she thought she saw someome heading down toward where Neil was fishing. Suddenly she realized it was David. What if he saw her talking to Neil? She knew of the problems both men were having. Christy had cried about the painit was causing her one, well several nights. Her first thought was to get Miss Alice. There was no telling what would happen when they met by the stream Neil was again quietly fishing and somewhat deep in thought when out of the cornor of his eye he saw the reverend heading directly toward him. "Reverend Grantland, have yu cum to fish?" "Mc Neil, we have something to settle once and for all" In David's mind the man before him was responcible for all his unhappiness. It was just like living his teenasge years over again. His older brother had beat him in everything; sports, schooling, getting dates. All the repressed anger welled up inside him. "Reverend, if its about christy" David completely forgot himself and took a swin at the suprised doctor. Neil dropped his rod and defly stepped aside. The momentum pushed Daviid right into a moderatly deep pool of very clear and cold mountain water. Neil was laughing by this time David, please I didn't set out to win christy's heart. In fact I tried to shut her out, so many times. You know that I...." David cut him off "you've always been better at everything. sports, school, woman. now you're trying to take Rose too. Stefan The realization that David had witnessed Rose's talk with him and it really wasn't Christy or maybe not even him opened his eyes. Since he was an only child he has no expeience with sibling rivelry. He knew that stefan was his brother. He turned around. His tone was exasperated "Grantland, Grow up I'm not your brother and I'm not involved in any way with Rose except as a friend. We are like a brother and sister. She came to me, asking my advise about You! " "Look at you. I've tried to become your friend. I always envyed your faith and wanted you of all people to be happy when I found my way back to God's grace. I don't think you've had to ever fight for anything that's really important" David suddenly realized with a start the everything Neil said was.. is true. He could never have survived the pain and internal suffering that Neil had been through. "Neil, his eyes brimming with tears, please forgive me. I'm sorry. you're right. I've never had to work really hard to get anything, mother saw to that. that's why I came here. i knew mother would never be able to 'take care of everything' I needed to prove myself both as a man and a person. I guess i've failed at both. "David" Neil's tone had softened after he saw how troubled the young man looked. "I've tried to give you some indications of my respect. Sure you made some mistakes with your dealing with the folks here but on the whole you've shown alot of spunk! Like when you were shot last year. How about the telephone? That never would have been possible without your initiative or work. Don't beat yourself up. And quit feeling sorry for yourself!! I know what that can do to you over time, it almost cost me my very life Come on get up aut of the cold water. If ye git pneumonia first i'll hav to treat yu and then answer to the woman folk. Rose really cares fer yu. Don't let her git away." . David put his hand up so Neil could help him out of the stream. The next thing Neil knew he was sitting next to Daivd in the water. "Turn around is fair play, doctor,Neil" David laughed. Neil also started to laugh. He knew that the flowing stream has washed away the invisible barrier that had stood between them for so long. Wasn't there some mention in the bible about water washing away..... Rose bounded up the mission stairs. "Miss Alice, Miss Alice!!!" Hearing the excitment in her voice both Christy and Ruby Mae came out the kitchen door. "What's wrong??" Rose was almost out of breath. "David saw me down at the stream talking to Neil.. I needed to talk to someone and he has always been like a big brother to me since momma died and..." She was handed a glass of water by Ruby Mae. "Lordy, lordy. they'll kill each other" "Oh no they won't Ruby Mae go get Miss alice. She is at the schoolhouse. Come on Rose let's see if we can talk some sense into their thick heads. Christy was getting into teacher mode. These were just two of her boys who definatly needed some straightening out. Both woman ran toward the creek. Christy knew that David was no match for Neil if it should come to a physcial confrontation. "Please Lord" they both silently prayed. what they saw stopped them dead in their tracks Both David and Neil were walking arm in arm laughing hysterically. They were soaking wet from their nose to their toes "No you mustint lie to a man of the cloth you know...' David was remarking on something Neil had said. "Ladies, fancy meetin you here" David wrapped his wet arm around Rose and Neil did the same with Christy. "The reverend Grantland and I wer settlin a wee bit of differences we had. Am i not rite,David" "Perfectly right, doctor, Neil" David laughed with a hugh grin on his face. Miss Alice and Ruby Mae were comming around the side of the mission when the foursome arrived. She just surveyed the situation and said nothing. "Doctor, perhaps you would like to change into some dry clothes before we catch our death of cold I something in the bunkhouse that should fit you" "Lead on David" Ruby Mae stood watching in amazment at the two men "What happened, . Miss Rose, Miss Christy ?" "I wish we knew" both Rose and christy expressed with suprise and wonderment.. "Ladies, the way of the Lord is both wonderous and sometime mysterious. Let us give thanks for the small mirace we have witnessed here today. " Part eight At long last their wedding day arrived. Everyone in the cove was excited. Julia had arrived the week before and hovered over Christy's every move to the point she just wanted to run away. Early on her wedding day, Christy snuck down the back stairs of the mission. The sun had just begun to shine on the river when she arrived at the special, secret spot Neil had introduced her to. It seemed like only yesterday he was teaching her to fish. 'How quiet and peaceful,' she thought. 'Why can't we get married here. Just Neil, God and I. .' "A penny for your thoughts, little one." She turned around to see Neil standing behind her, smiling. "Oh why can't we just elope?" she said with exasperation. "Mother is suffocating me. She'd go crazy if she knew we were together." "Relax, the day will be over soon enough. Relax and let's enjoy some quiet time together. This may be our last chance until tonight. Besides no one should be able to find us here." "Say, isn't it bad luck to see the bride on her wedding day?" "Considering what we have been through, I don't think so." His gentle laugh and touch always relaxed and calmed her. She could not imagine her life without them. She just lay her head back on Neil's chest and closed her eyes. "I could stay right here for the rest of my life." "It would be a great idea, but somehow I don't think we'd ever be able to get away with it. Today is the happiest day in my life, you know." He gathered her up in his arms and kissed her for along time. He too would have liked to just pick her up and run away. After just sitting there for awhile he turned to her. "Well now, you'd had better get back to the mission before your mother sends out a search party. I'll see you later, Mrs. MacNeill." Christy walked slowly back to the mission. The sun was now shining brightly and the honeysuckle never smelled so sweet. "Where have you been?" Julia was standing at the top of the stairs. "I needed to have some time to myself. Actually I was trying to convince Neil to run away." Tears started to run down her face. "Oh Christy, come in here and have something to eat. You are supposed to be happy today. I know that you are a little overwhelmed." Preparations for this wedding had been ongoing all week. A small arbor had been reconstructed on the spot where just two years before Ida Sweetwater and Clarence Sweetwater had been married, who were now the proud parents of a beautiful daughter and their small orange orchard was doing very well. Fairlight and Jeb Spencer were going to witness for the couple. Ruby Mae and Rob Allen would also be in the wedding. After a lot of discussion Christy, decided that all of the children who wanted to could be in the wedding as flower children. Her mother strongly objected. "Christy, this would be too unwieldy." "Mother, we want the children to be a part of this wedding. They are now and will always be a big part of our life. We'll figure out a way." The children started to collect flowers the day before and all were excited to be a part of the festivities. Julia met Creed Allen and Sam Houston trying to sneak up the mission stairs to Christy's room. "Where are you two going?" "Too see Miss Christy, mam. We need to discuss something that's powerfully important." "Not now, boys. Christy is too busy and she needs to get ready. She can talk to you later." Both boys looked crestfallen and then snuck up the back stairs to Christy's room. "Teacher, Miss Christy, are you there?" "What is it boys?" Christy came out onto the balcony and stood with the two boys. Their voices were in a whisper. "We need to talk. Can Scalawag be part of the ceremony?" "Well... will he behave?" "Why sure, teacher. He always has before." "Okay then, but don't tell my mother." Creed Allen's eyes sparkled. "Ya mean it teacher?" She smiled in agreement. "I've got to get him home and we got to get a bath!" The morning hours went quickly and soon Christy was dressed in the plain silk wedding gown that her grandmother brought over from England so many years before. "Thee looks beautiful!" She turned around to see Miss Alice standing at the doorway beaming. "Thank you." She almost started to cry. Miss Alice came over and put her hands around her shoulders. "Today is the day God planned for you both. You have persevered through many trials. Enjoy the gift. I do love you both so much." She hugged Christy tightly. "Thee has be just like a daughter to me. Thank you for allowing me to be apart of your life. You need something new. Here is a new handkerchief. You will need it I think. I know I will." Christy's father came to her room as Miss Alice was leaving. "Well little miss, it's time to go." "Oh Daddy, I'm so glad you are here with me today." He came over and hugged her tightly and they talked for awhile. Jeb was helping Neil try and tie his tie. "Hold still, you're moving around too much." "Weren't you nervous at your wedding?" "Yes I was. What we need is a drink." "Not for me or you either. Fairlight would not be amused." "I'm only kidding. Come on, let's go. It's about dang time you were hitched." Everyone in the cove was gathered around the schoolhouse/church building. David warmly shook Neil's hand. "Are you ready?" "Yes. I really can't believe that today is really here." 'Nor would I,' thought David. In his secret heart he still wished that he was marring Christy today. Even with his real happiness with Rose, Christy would always remain special in his heart. The four men walked to the arbor. Aunt Hattie was singing and several musicians were already playing. Soon everyone in the crowd became quiet. The children started to walk down the path to the arbor. It was quite a crowd and a path of flowers was laid down everywhere. Julia rolled her eyes as Miss Alice smiled and squeezed her hand. Even Scalawag, decked out with a ribbon around his neck, behaved himself. Instead of joining their parents in the crowd the children spontaneously crowded around Neil and where Christy would stand. Neil just smiled and had his hands on Creed Allen and Sam Houston's shoulders. Soon Fairlight and Ruby Mae walked down the flower path to stand with their partners. "All right, little miss, it's really time. Remember I love you and love Neil for loving you." Christy nervously kissed her father and took his arm. This was the day she had waited for her entire life. 'How beautiful she is,' Neil thought as he saw her for the first time in her wedding dress. 'Lord, thank you for the gift of our love. Please help us in our new life together.' Soon Christy and her father reached the arbor. William kissed her and then gave her hand to Neil. Both were radiant in their smiles. The children crowded into the couple. Neither seemed to mind. "Friends," David started, "We are gathered her today to celebrate the love and the start of a new life for two people dear to all our hearts. Our school teacher Christy Rudd Huddleston and our physician Neil MacNeill." After exchanging wedding vows and rings David declared them man and wife. Both were oblivious to the crowd as they kissed their first kiss as man and wife. Christy danced her first dance with her father. She was so thankful he was able to after his stroke. William then handed Christy off to Neil. "Dance with your wife Neil. Thank you again for being there for her and loving her like I always hoped she would be." The celebration went on all afternoon and into the evening. Soon the women started to gather around Christy. She had been forewarned by Fairlight and had planned their escape with precision. She hoped Neil would support her. Neil had also planned an escape. He knew that Christy would not appreciate the old custom of Shivaree. Jeb had agreed to help him because of their long friendship. He didn't agree that they should leave early but would help anyway. The couple was escorted to Christy's old room upstairs at the mission. Christy blushed, "Neil I don't..." He came over to her. His closeness was almost intoxicating. "Christy, I knew that this custom may not be to your liking. I'd rather go home too. I've a plan. Come on." He led the way quietly down the back stairs of the mission. They were lucky that everyone was still singing and celebrating out in front of the mission. She saw Jeb holding Captain's reins in the shadows. "Thanks, Jeb. I hope that no one will bother us at the cabin." "Well, I think you two should stay, but don't worry, I'll tell everyone you went somewhere else." He reached up and shook Neil's hand, then kissed Christy on her hand. "You two deserve all the happiness God has to give. See you later." They both gratefully waved and quietly rode off to their cabin. Christy held on to Neil and was incredibly happy. When they arrived to the cabin Neil helped her down and put Captain into the small barn. He carried her over the threshold of the cabin. "Welcome home, Mrs. MacNeill." He kissed her gently, then passionately. "I love you Neil, so much it hurts. I am so glad to be your wife." His hands caressed her all over and awakened afeeling she never knew she had. "Come on, let's go upstairs." He led her up to their bedroom. They began their married life learning to accept the best gift that God could give them as a married couple. The sunlight woke Christy up. This time she was not upset. Just so very glad to be in the arms of the man she loved with her whole heart and soul. "Good morning. Did you sleep well, Mrs. MacNeill?" "Yes, this was the best night of my life." "Mine too. I love you Christy. I love holding you, loving you, everything about you." The rest of the day was lazily spent enjoying each other. Part nine Spring was beginning to bloom all over the cove. Due to the number of children, both Christy and Cecile were teaching full time. There was to be meeting after church on Sunday to talk about putting a new addition onto the school. Both teachers hoped that this would be accomplished by the start of the next school year. Christy was teaching the older children and Cecile the younger ones. They were also fortunate to have a young teacher apprentice from Asheville. Christy had been feeling ill this morning, again, and wasn't sure why. Lately she had also been more fatigued and cranky. She made breakfast for Neil but ate little. "Not feeling well today? If you are not better by the time I come home I'm going to give you a thorough examination." She smiled. "How through? I'm fine, really. What I need is a good walk in this spring air. I've got to get going to school." She came around the table and gave her husband a gentle, but long, kiss. Her heart still fluttered whenever they kissed or especially when Neil held her close. "Okay, I should be back by lunchtime. We could have lunch together. It's been awhile since I've had the time." She smiled. She never knew how much work Neil had to do until they married. Thankfully Dan was here to lighten the load. During the history lesson just before lunch, the room began to spin and Christy had to sit down. 'I just need my lunch,' she thought. Christy was teaching the older children at the mission today. There was barely enough room in the school house now. Cecile and Amy, their apprentice, would teach the younger ones together. There was just too much noise for the teaching of math and science. Lunchtime finally came, and while waiting for Neil to arrive the whole world started to spin. The next thing she knew was Miss Alice wiping her forehead with a damp towel and she was lying on the sofa in the mission's main room. "What happened?" "Thee passed out and Rob Allen carried you in here. Have you been feeling okay?" "Well, now that you mention it, I've been ill almost all week and terribly tired." Miss Alice started to smile broadly. "Well I think you need to consider your condition, Mrs. MacNeill." She looked at Miss Alice and her eyes became very, very wide. "No I can't be!" "Why not? Have you talked to Neil about your symptoms?" "We talked a little this morning. He was going to give me a thorough exam tonight if I didn't feel any better." Miss Alice chuckled, "Well you two can talk right now." She pointed to a rider coming up to the mission. "Are you okay? Rob Allen met me by the schoolhouse. I told you I thought you should stay home today. You are too stubborn for your own good." "Just like you." "Now tell me just what happened." "I just became faint. The next thing I knew I was here and Miss Alice was wiping me with a towel." "Let's take you home and have a look." Miss Alice came into the room with drinks for both Neil and Christy. "Neil, I don't think this is anything to worry about that nine months won't cure." He looked at Alice and his eyes became as wide as Christy's had been. Christy and Alice started to laugh. "I think she's right. Congratulations, father." Neil came and sat beside her with tears in his eyes. "I can't believe it. What a wonderful gift. Now you can't..." She put her hand to his lips. "Listen. Women have been giving birth for a long time. Now that we think this is our problem," she giggled, "I'll not be treated any different." Neil started to help her up. "Okay, can we at least go home and rest this afternoon?" Alice came over and hugged and kissed each of them. They were her children and her happiness knew no bounds. "I will keep this between us until you wish to make an announcement." The ride home was unusually quiet. Both were immersed in private thought about this sudden change of events. Christy went upstairs for an unusual but welcome nap. She awoke to find Neil sitting on the bed beside her stroking her hair. "You are so beautiful." Suddenly tears welled up in her eyes. "What's wrong?" "I don't think I'm ready for this." He laughed sincerely. "I don't think anyone is. We've trusted in God's plan all along our journey together. This must be part of that plan. Whatever happens we promised stay and face things together. We will manage. Now you have got to eat better and watch yourself just a little." He gently rubbed her abdomen. "Hello there little one. You have two people who just can't wait to meet and love you." She held his hand and was immediately at peace. Every time during the week that Miss Alice saw Christy she broke into a huge grin. Christy knew that she and Neil would have to break the news soon. After school she went to see Fairlight. They talked about all matter of things happening in the cove. Finally she blurted out, "I'm pregnant!" "Oh Christy, how wonderful! Does Neil know?" "Well actually we've know for the past week. I just wasn't sure and I'm really scared." "Everyone is their first time. I'll be right here to help you. Does anyone else know?" "Just Miss Alice" "Do you want it spread around or do you want to wait?" "The best way to spread the news will be to tell the children. I'll talk to Neil about coming to the school tomorrow." The next morning Neil accompanied Christy to school. All the children met together in the morning. Last evening after dinner they had ridden over to tell Dan and Cecile. Both were overjoyed. The children were surprised to see Neil there without advance warning. Many thought he was going to tell them more stories about Scotland. "Children we have some important news to tell you. Mrs. MacNeill is going to have a baby." Most of the children just stared at them. Their teacher was going to have a baby!!! All the children then crowded around them. Some were afraid to touch Christy. Neil picked up a couple of the smallest ones. "Does anyone have any questions?" "When's this here baby comin?" "Is it a boy baby or a girl baby?" "You feel it movin yet?" Christy answered them, "Well we think the baby will arrive sometime in October. I don't know whether it is a boy or a girl and the baby is still to small to feel it move." "We're all happy fur you doc and Miss Christy." The children still called her Miss Christy. This was done out of love and she never corrected them. Neil was warmly smiling and Christy loved the way the children were drawn to him like a magnet. He was always gentle and loving. "Now children, can I count on your help? Miss Christy should not be lifting or carrying the heaviest things. She should not have to run after you. I'll need your help especially when I'm away doctoring someone." The boys stepped forward. "You can count on us doc. You won't have to worry a bit." The news of the MacNeill pregnancy spread like wild fire around the cove thanks to the children. Christy's pregnancy was uneventful. Neil doted on her and their life together blossomed even more. Julia, Christy's mother, came to visit and help out the second week in October. "You look wonderful." "I feel fat and I'm not happy about having to stop teaching." Neil came into the cabin and smiled. "We talked about this. I let you teach longer than I originally wanted to. Please don't get so upset." Julia kept her peace. She still was not to happy that her first grandchild would be born in the cabin. "Mother, I plan to have my baby here in the same cabin were Neil was born and all the MacNeills were before him. You may either come here and help or please wait until the baby is born. I am not afraid. Miss Alice, Neil, and Dan can take care of any problem that will probably not arise." The next day was beautiful, sunny and crisp. Neil needed to travel over to El Pano for part of the day. He and Dan had set up an eye clinic in the former tea house. Today was Neil's turn to see patients. Dan was taking any long distance call because Christy's due date was so near. "I'll be home early." Christy walked with him to the barn. "I'm not so sure having Mother here was one of my better ideas." "Now relax, you'll be happy she is here." "You're one to talk. I've seen how you have been walking around on eggshells." "Not me," he grinned, "sometimes I still wonder whether your mother really approves of our marriage." "Well, we do and that is what matters. Hurry home. I love you." Christy returned to find her mother making her bed. "This quilt is beautiful." "Yes. Neil's mother made it before she died. Aunt Hattie saved it for him until he returned from school. It's always been on our bed. I'm going to walk over to the mission." "You mean the school, don't you?" Julia smiled. "Please don't overexert yourself." After lunch Ruby Mae came over. Soon she was talking the paint off the walls. Suddenly Christy got up and started walking around the room. "Ruby Mae, please go to the mission and get my mother and Miss Alice." "Miss Christy, are you alright?" "Yes, but I think the baby wants to come today. Please hurry." Miss Alice and Julia came right to the cabin. "You appear to be correct Christy. This baby wants to meet his parents soon. Where is Neil?" "He is at the eye clinic in El Pano today." "I think we should send someone to find him so he does not miss the birth of his first child. Ruby Mae, get John Spencer to ride to the clinic." "Yes, Mam." "Julia, please start to boil some water while I help Christy upstairs to her bed." "I'm alright I don't want to be a ..." she doubled over with a strong contraction. Christy could not believe how painful the contractions could be. She wanted Neil there to calm her, but not so he wouldn't worry about her pain. John Spencer found Neil on his way home. "Miss Alice said to come and fetch you. Miss Christy is goin to have your baby today!" "Thanks John, let's get going." They galloped all the way home. Fairlight and Jeb were already at the cabin when Neil arrived. He took the steps two at a time. Jeb grabbed him on the porch. "Easy doc, the women have things well in hand. You come and sit down here." "But...." "No buts doc, just because she's your wife. Everything is under control. You'll just be in the way. This is only yur first," he laughed. Neil smiled. He was glad that Jeb was here with him. Julia was cooling Christy's head with a wet towel. "You're doing great." Miss Alice looked concerned. "Christy, has Neil mentioned that the baby was turned around?" "Yes, but he thought the baby's head was turned facing down a few days ago." "Well I think the baby has turned around again. Let me see if Neil has returned." She walked out onto the porch. "Neil I think the baby has become breech. She's having a very hard time. I think thee can calm her down and maybe turn the baby around." Neil quickly went to his wife's bedside. "Well you are working hard lass. Let's see if I can help you out a bit." He gently kissed her and started to rub her face. "Now don't push right now, even if you want to." His big gentle hands started to confidently examine her. Julia was fearful for her daughter, but after seeing the love in his eyes and watching Neil expertly care for Christy, she knew he would allow nothing to happen to her. During the exam he gently turned the baby around so its head was going to arrive first. "Now push really hard with the next contraction." She tried and became exhausted. "One more time lass, the baby is right here." She prayed for strength and pushed as hard as she could. William Neil MacNeill came into the world at 4:30pm on Oct. 20, 1915. He immediately let the world know he had arrived. "Oh Neil, Mother, Miss Alice, he's beautiful." She examined the baby and kissed him and her husband repeatedly. Miss Alice took the baby to clean him up a bit. Julia was ecstatic "My first grandchild, thank you both. I can't wait to call your father tonight." Both parents gazed into each others eyes. Neil kissed Christy. "You were great and you'll be the best mother." She returned the kiss. "And you will be a great dad." Julia returned holding William. "Thank you both for naming him after your father. He will be so proud." Christy felt well enough to sit up. Fairlight and Jeb were standing by the bed. She gave William to Fairlight. "William, meet my best friend." The baby looked sleepily into her eyes and grabbed her finger with his. All in the room joined hands and said a prayer of thanksgiving for the wondrous event that had just taken place. After a light dinner everyone left so the new parents could be alone with their son for awhile. Neil climbed into bed with Christy. She laid the baby on his bare chest. A big smile appeared on both of their faces. Christy lay on her side, rubbing Neil's head and William's back. "I just can't believe how blessed we are." Neil rubbed her forehead. "You always believed in and followed God's plan. His love is reflected in us and now in our son." Christy fell asleep quickly. William woke up several times and was easily fed and comforted. He would prove to be an easy child to raise. Christy's father arrived at the end of the week. He spent many happy hours getting to know his grandchild and go fishing with Neil. Dan Scott took all the medical calls that week so Neil could stay at home. It was the first 'vacation' he had taken in a dozen years. "Neil, this is one of the best weeks of my life. It's so relaxing here. Even Julia is more relaxed than I seen her in ages. Thank you for inviting us to stay awhile." "William, I'm truly glad you are both here. Christy loves you both so much and so do I." Sunday was a very special day. William was going to be christened. Jeb and Fairlight were happy to be William's godparents. Everyone form the cove seemed to crowd into the church today. The children were especially eager to hold and touch the baby." The End
