Christy looked at her arm, “Well it’s all healed and I can barely see the scar.” She said aloud even though no one was in her room. “I’ll never wonder what it’s like again to be shot.” She looked at herself in the mirror and critiqued her looks. “I wish my nose wasn’t this big!” She said pushing on it as if to make is smaller. “And my eyes, they are just to big!” She sighed as she looked at her body, “I need to lose a few pounds, otherwise David is going to think I am a fat pig!” She hurried over to her bed were her clothes lay and got dressed. Then she quietly left the house and went for her early morning walk. Neil had gone to Lyleton a week ago to be a witness for the case. He had thought that once he explained it to the Marshall there would be no problem, but they needed a witness to come and testify in court, so he had to go for the hearing. Christy sat down on a log and put her chin in her hand and closed her eyes. She thought about everything that had happened. Then she thought on Neil, his smile, his voice, and the way he opened up to her and she smiled. If someone had been watching Christy they would have laughed at her. At first Christy had looked sort of sad, and then her expression changed to a hint of a smile, then she had a dreamy look on her face. It was the very last expression she had that would make someone either laugh or wonder where in the world this girl was from, and if she was crazy. All of the sudden Christy gasped, sat up and opened her eyes. She then quickly got up and rushed off murmuring under her breath, “I am so stupid! How could I have done such a foolish thing! What am I going to do?!” As she was hurrying around muttering to herself she wasn’t watching where she was going and ran right into someone or something. Christy backed up and looked up and laughed. She had gotten to the mission house and ran smack dab into a wet sheet that was just put on the clothesline by Ruby Mae. “What’s so funny, teacher?” Ruby Mae asked as she stepped out from behind the sheet with an empty basket resting on her hip. “Oh nothing Ruby Mae!” Christy said quieting her laughs and hurried up to the mission house. “Miz Christy sure is actin’ mighty strange today! She must’ve brushed her hair to much this mornin’!” Ruby Mae shrugged and went back to work. ~*~*~*~*~*~ Christy opened the door and hurried inside, “Whoa, slow down Christy. Where’ s the fire?” David joked. Christy looked up at him, “There isn’t any fire. What are you taking about? Did Ruby Mae burn breakfast?” David looked at Christy, ‘Something isn’t right here.’ He thought to himself, but said out loud, “It was just a joke Christy.” “Oh just a joke, ha! Oh… okay… is breakfast ready yet? I’m hungry. Or maybe I should skip breakfast…” ‘Something is definitely wrong here.’ But David pushed the thought aside and teased, “You skip breakfast?” He reached out to take her arm, but she stepped back and looked at him with fire in her eyes. “I can’t believe you just said that, David! I need to get ready for school.” Then Christy ran upstairs to her room trying to stifle the sobs. “You sure got yourself in a mess this time, David boy.” David said to himself as he walked to the Dinning Room to eat. ~*~*~*~*~*~ Christy had gotten into her room and cried for a little while, but was finally able to pull herself together. She splashed some water on her face and avoided the mirror. She grabbed her bag with her books and hurried out to the balcony* and quietly down the steps. When she reached the schoolhouse she went inside only to stop in shock. *THANKS PAULA B FOR YOUR HELP! AND EVERYONE ELSE!!! What are you doing here?” Christy said excitedly. He jumped at her voice and whirled around to see her. He had come to the schoolhouse the night before and slept there. He had just got up and started gathering his things when Christy walked in. Lundy looked at her for a moment, “I didn’t mean anyone no harm. I just didn ’t want to sleep out in the rain last night. I’m headin’ to…” He stopped unsure if he should tell her or not. “Well,” Christy said walking up towards her desk and pulling out her books from her bag, “Why didn’t you stay with your father last night?” Lundy was relived she hadn’t asked him where he was going. “You know me and Pa never got along. I could never please him. So I ain’t gunna stay around here any longer.” “I wish you would stay Lundy.” Christy said simply, but the words cut into his heart nonetheless. “I can’t Miz Christy. I need to be movin’ on.” He swung his bag over his shoulder, and started for the door. “Lundy?” Christy said and he turned to look at her. “Here.” She said handing him a basket of food. “You will need this. And Lundy?” She said looking up at him, “Don’t stay away to long, and please be careful.” When Lundy looked into her eyes he thought, ‘Well someone sure done made the teacher cry! I wonder who it was? Somethin’ sure is different about the her, though…’ Out loud he said, “I’ll do my best, teacher.” Then he turned around and walked out the door. ‘He called me teacher.’ Christy thought with a smile to her face. He hadn’t called her that in a long time, and it felt good. Part/Chapter: 4 Summery: Christy found Lundy in the schoolhouse where he had slept for the night. The school day went by fast for the children, but for Christy it didn’t feel like it was ever going to end. Thoughts of Neil and Lundy ran ramped in her head. But even those thoughts were overcome by her hunger. When it was lunchtime she stayed at her desk and corrected papers as the children took their lunch outside. Her stomach growled and growled in protest. But Christy did her best to ignore it. When lunchtime was over and the children had come back inside she was passing out math papers. She was in front of Creeds desk when her stomach growled so loudly he looked up from his writing and looked at her. “Was that you teacher?” he whispered. Christy’s cheeks reddened. “Iffn you’ re hungry teacher you can have this.” He pulled out a biscuit from his lunch pail. “No thank you, Creed. I will be fine.” And she turned on her heel and went back to her desk. After what seemed like an eternity to Christy it was finally time for the class to be dismissed. As she dismissed them she had seen David outside waiting for her. She didn’t want to talk to him and was relived when Ruby Mae, and Rob Allen had gone up and started talking to him. She quickly got her stuff together and hurried to the mission. She went right to the kitchen and grabbed a couple of apples and went upstairs where she quickly deposited her things and slipped back outside. She started heading towards Neil’s because the children had told her he was back, but then she changed her mind and went to see Fairlight. ~*~*~*~*~*~ When she got to the Spencer cabin she found no one home. So she left and went back to the mission. As she was heading towards the house she seen David she stopped and watched as he pulled a piece of paper from his pocket and smiled. Then put it back. ‘I wonder what that was about?’ but shrugged her shoulders and went inside. Ruby Mae had dinner ready and they ate in silence. Miss Alice watched Christy and David and knew something was wrong. After dinner David took Christy on a walk, but not before Miss Alice seen that she wanted to be anywhere, but with him. David got Christy to the pond and said, “I’m sorry Christy for this morning. I didn’t mean to hurt your feelings I was just teasing…” Christy looked up at him, “I should be apologizing David. I shouldn’t have reacted that way, but I did and I am sorry.” They stood and talked for a long time by the pond. Christy had known deep in her heart before Fairlight had asked her that she loved Neil. When it hit her she couldn’t believe she had fallen in love with a man who 1) Didn’t love God, 2) Supported the Moonshine business, and 3) WAS MARRIED! ‘What am I going to do? Here I was mooning over Neil and I totally forgot he was married until Margaret showed up! What am I going to do?’ She looked up at David and boldly said, “David you were right when you said I had to make a choice, and I am sorry but I can’t marry you.” David’s jaw clenched and unclenched and his eyes were hardened. He studied her for a moment and whispered, “I know, Christy. But you can’t marry a married man either.” And he turned and walked away. Christy watched him for a few moments and then ignoring Neil shooed the children back inside to finish the school day. But the day was ruined. The children couldn’t concentrate, “Why did the preacher leave ya Miz Christy? Teacher, are you gunna marry the preacher? Miz Christy when are you getting’ hitched?” But one question stuck out from the rest, “Teacher, iffin you marry the preacher does that mean you’re going to leave us?” Christy looked up to see who had asked the question only to be met with several sad and startled faces. She stood up and looked at all the children, “I think you all deserve to know this. I told David that I wasn’t going to marry him.” There was silence all around the room and then all of the sudden there was whoops and laughter. “SHE’S STAYIN’!” Someone shouted. ~*~*~*~*~*~ It was then I realized how much these children love me. Christy wrote in her journal that night. Sure it hurts to know that I can’t have someone when I want him, and to hurt David… that hurts too. But the worse thing is…that it’ s going to be a long time before I have children of my own, and I want children so bad. Every day I have to see children I wish I could take home with me and take care of, but I can’t. And now all hopes of having a child before my 23rd birthday is dashed. Part/Chapter: 6 Summery: Christy made a choice not to marry David, but she realized she can’ t marry Neil either. The children are happy Christy is staying in the Cove. Christy woke during the night to hear someone crying, ‘Sounds like a man.’ Christy thought before she drifted back off to sleep. When Christy woke up the next morning and got ready she thought of the man crying in the night, but dismissed it thinking it was just a dream or something. She quietly walked downstairs and grabbed something to eat; as she was heading out the door she heard a loud snore. She stopped ‘What was that?’ she thought. Then she heard it again. She tiptoed into the Parlor where the noise was coming from and then she stopped short when she seen Neil lying there sound asleep. ‘What is he doing here?’ She thought when she quietly left the mission. She hurried over to her spot and munched on her apple. She sighed as she sat down on the log. “Miss Christy?” She turned to see Dan standing there. “Yes Dan?” “It just surprised me to see you out here today that’s all.” Dan said sitting down beside her. “Why? I come here just about every day now.” She asked. “Well after Margaret died last night…” “What?!” Christy said jumping up with Dan following suit. “Didn’t you know Miss Christy? Margaret died last night she had something, but it wasn’t tuberculosis.” “Why didn’t anyone tell me?!” She said rushing back to the mission. ‘That was Neil crying last night! And no one came and woke me up! I can’t believe I didn’t wake up! Oh wait.’ Christy stopped, ‘Neil was crying. He must have still loved her… Oh I don’t know what to do! I just know Miss Alice probably needs me!’ So Christy started off back to the mission. Christy went back up to her room through the balcony, and went to Miss Alice ’s bedroom door. When she heard quiet sniffling she knocked quietly and when summoned to enter she slowly opened the door. Miss Alice was in bed still her eyes were all bloodshot from crying, “Oh I hade hoped it was thee!” she said opening her arms wide. Christy ran into them, “I am so sorry, Miss Alice! I wish I had known earlier.” They both cried together for a while before they pulled apart. “I thank thee Christy for all thee has done. Margaret left something for you. Neil will give it to you later. In the note she left… she said that you told her to go back, that Neil was worth fighting for…” Miss Alice blew her nose, “I want to thank you for that.” “Oh but Miss Alice! If I had never told her that she probably wouldn’t be…” “Yes, she would.” Miss Alice said interrupting Christy. “She visited a doctor before returning here. He told her she had only a couple of months to live. Neil examined her after… he said that she couldn’t have lived another day. It was really bad.” At that point Miss Alice seemed to close up and I knew she wanted to be alone. “Well I need to get to school. If you need me though, you send someone to come get me okay?” Miss Alice nodded and Christy quietly left. “Oh God! Help us all deal with this situation. Give Miss Alice strength and let Neil find you. In Jesus Name. Amen.” Christy silently whispered to herself before heading back to the school. Neil was still sleeping on the couch in the Parlor. She quietly went in and pulled the covers up on him and the brushed a curl off his forehead before leaving. All the children at school had known about Margaret dying and they asked Christy question after question, but she didn’t know any more then they did. Christy was so glad when the school day was over. She had dismissed early and hurried over to the mission, but before she got there David stopped her. After his last proposal he and her were awkward for a while but they stayed friends. “Neil needs you, Christy.” He said simply, and she looked at him confused. He grinned, “He’s in my bunkhouse. I will give you both 5 minutes and if you don’t come out by then I am going in there after you! Now go on…” He said giving her a little shove towards the door. Christy walked over to it and knocked, “Neil it’s me…” Before she could say anymore the door was thrown open and she was pulled inside and the door was shut as quick as it had been opened. Christy looked at Neil in shock. “What?!” But before she could say anything else Neil pulled her into his arms and kissed her soundly. She melted into his embrace, but then remembered he wasn’t saved and quickly pushed at him. He pulled back still holding her, “Why Christy one moment you enjoy it and the next your trying to get out of it.” He grinned, “I don’t plan on letting you go.” “I can see that!” Christy snapped. “So do you mind telling me what’s going on?” Neil smiled and lowered his face down to hers again. Her breath caught, but he didn’t kiss her, his face stopped an inch from hers and he looked into her eyes. “I’m free Christy. I’m free from Margaret, and I am free from the world.” Neil said watching Christy’s reaction. “What do you mean, Neil?” She whispered. “I mean, darling, I am saved, and I want to take you home to be my wife today!” “Oh but!” Whatever Christy was going to say was cut off by another kiss. The End! ;o) Aren't I such a stinker?!
