It is from the CBS series. Christy, Ruby Mae and Bessie were in the parlor sewing and talking… “Rob Allen still hasn’t paid me no attention at all.” Ruby Mae pouted. “Well that ain’t nothing. John hasn’t hardly spoke to me in the last few months!” Bessie said. ‘I haven’t seen Neil in a while…’ I shook my head, ‘Ugh! I’m beginning to sound like Bessie and Ruby Mae!’ “How are you and John doing?” I said breaking the silence. “Well, it seems to me he’s still hurtin’ over what I did, and I don’t blame him none, but I sure wish things were like they use to be. I miss him.” Bessie said frowning. “Well at least you know that he likes ya. I don’t even know if Rob likes me.” Ruby Mae said hanging her head low as she continued her sewing. “Well teacher, at least you know that you got your man, and you be understandin’ each other. I for one don’t understand boys at all!” Bessie said flustered. “What an interesting conversation you all are having!” boomed a voice at the door. I blushed, knowing full well it was Neil before I even seen him. I turned toward him, “Hello Neil.” “Christy.” Neil said nodding. “I just came by to talk to Alice. Is she around?” “I haven’t seen her around for a while…” “She be at Dan’s place. She said she wanted to talk with him about somethin’ .” Ruby Mae said. “Thank you Ruby Mae.” Neil said then looked at me, “You can go ahead and finish your conversation now.” Neil said grinning as he turned to headed out the door. I turned back around to see Ruby Mae and Bessie looking at me and giggling. “What?” I asked. “Preacher he be a fine and all,” Ruby Mae said giggling some more, “but the doc, he be down right handsome!” and her and Bessie started to giggle again. “Ruby Mae…” I said sternly, but she continued to go on. “And with Margaret being dead and all he sure be a right fine catch!” Ruby Mae said. “Ruby Mae, I thought you liked Rob Allen?” I asked “That’s right teacher, but I wasn’t thinkin’ about me at all.” At that both girls laughed some more. Just then there was a knock at the door and it opened a crack, “Bessie, Ruby Mae?” John Spencer said as he opened the door further. “We are in here, John.” I called. “Howdy, teacher.” Said John as he walked into the room; “I sure hope I’m not interruptin’ anythin’, but me and Rob Allen was a wonderin’ if you girls would like to come with us for a walk?” I looked over at the girls, and they both looked at me, “You two go on ahead, we can finish this quilt later.” Both girls got up and hurried out the door with John Spencer. ‘Now’ I thought as the peace and quit settled around me, ‘I feel so lonely.’ I folded up the quilt we were making to sell in Ashville. After a while I heard a horse riding up, ‘Who can that be?’ I wondered as I walked to the window. I didn’t see anyone so I went over to the door before I reached it; it was thrown open and there stood Dan and Jeb with a very bloody Neil in their arms. Part/Chapter: 2 Summery: Ruby Mae, Bessie and Christy were talking about boys, as they were sewing. They went for a walk with them, and Dan and Jeb came to the mission with a very bloody Neil. Jeb and Dan brought Neil over to the bed that Tom had used months before. “I will tell you later. First I need your help.” I nodded my head, “Boil up some water and tear some old sheets apart for bandages. Then come back as soon as you can, cause I might need your help. Jeb,” he said turning to him as I hurried to do as I was told, “can you go get Doctor MacNeill’s bag for me?” Jeb nodded and hurried out the door and back. “Thanks, Jeb. Now can you put Neil’s horse in the barn?” “I surely will, iffen you don’t need my help.” “You are helping me, by taking care of Neil’s horse.” “Okay.” Jeb said as he hurried out the door once again. I came in a few minutes later with the bandages and the hot water. “Okay, Miss Christy, I am going to need your help do you think you can do that?” I nodded earnestly, “Okay here what I need you to do…” *~*~*~*~* As the surgery was taking place I had a hard time concentrating on anything else but Neil’s chest. ‘I am glad he doesn’t have a hairy chest.’ I had caught myself thinking. ‘His chest was so lean, and he sure had muscles!’ I shook my head and tried to listen to Dan as he told me what to do. *~*~*~*~* Hours later the bullet was removed from Neil’s chest, and Dan and I sat next to him waiting for him to wake up. “Dan, what happened?” I asked. “Well,” Dan began leaning back in his chair, “Miss Alice and I was talkin’ at my cabin and we walked over to the river and stopped and finished our conversation there. She left and I stayed there thinking about things she had said. Anyways, I heard this horse neigh and I turned to see Doctor MacNeill riding his horse towards me. As I walked over towards him he started to say something when someone shot. I don’t know who it was; I just fell to the ground. I looked around and didn’t see anyone, so I looked over and Neil was laying on the ground bleeding.” Dan took a deep breath, “I think the shot was meant for me.” I looked at Dan in shock, “Why do you think that?” “Birds-Eye is upset with me, because of my relationship with Miss Hattie, and I have been finding things around my cabin; warning signs.” He shook his head. “I have been thinking about leaving, but this… this just wants to make me stay and prove that I’m a man just like any white folks around here.” Just then there was a groan from the bed, “I think it was meant for me.” Neil said. Dan and I looked at Neil, confused. Part/Chapter: 3 Summery: Neil has been shot and Dan thinks it was meant for him. Dan and Christy perform surgery and Neil wakes up and says he thinks the shot was meant for him. Disclaimer: All rights of Catherine Marshall's "Christy" belong to the Marshall~ LeSourd family. I in no way, want to hurt anyone with this story; this is simply to make people laugh, cry and feel swoony! ;) Christy will live in the hearts and minds of fans forever. “Why do you think it was meant for you?” Dan said regaining his tongue first. Neil looked over at me, and by the look on his face I knew he didn’t want me to know what was going on, “I think I deserve to know seeing as how I just helped Dan remove the bullet.” Neil looked at me in shock and then at Dan, “She helped me, and didn’t faint once.” He said grinning at me. Neil sighed and began, “Well I just came back from a nice long ride. As I was riding I found something I don’t think anyone wanted me to see. I was coming to tell Miss Alice about it.” We were silent for a while and I couldn’t take it any longer, “What did you find?” I asked. “Well I found a still, and with it was Lundy Taylor and a few of other fella ’s that use to hang around Birds-Eye…” “What do you mean use to?” I interrupted. “Well Birds-Eye hasn’t been making moonshine and doing those kinds of things for a while I guess.” Neil said, “Can I go on now?” I was still curious, but I nodded my head from him to go on. “Well from what I seen they had a nice big still, and,” Neil glanced at me, “looks to me like they have been stealing other people’s property or they sure are making some money.” Neil leaned back exhausted. I was about to ask more questions, but Dan interrupted me, “I think, Miss Christy, we should let Neil rest now.” I looked at Neil and he seemed relieved he didn’t have to go on, “All right. But… I will want to finish this conversation you know.” I said before I turned and stalked out the door. I couldn’t get my mind off what we had been talking about. ‘Why wouldn’t Birds-Eye be hanging around his old friends, and why was Neil acting strange? It never bothered him before. He supported them in a way before and now???’ I was just confused. Questions filled my mind so I decided to take a walk. *~*~*~*~* Meanwhile back in where Neil and Dan where… “You’re going to have to tell her you know.” Dan said as he sat down when Christy left. “I know, but I don’t want to tell her right now. She has a lot of other things to worry about without adding me to the list.” Neil looked out the window and seen Christy walking towards the pond. He admired her straight back and they way she walked. He longed to reach out and touch her hair. “Umm... Doctor MacNeill?” Dan said interrupting his thoughts, “Did you hear a word I said?” He had followed Neil’s gaze and seen Christy walking. He smiled, ‘Oh!’ he thought silently to himself. “I’m sorry, Dan. What did you say?” Neil said regretfully turning his gaze from Christy. “Oh never mind.” Dan said smiling, “You need to rest now.” He got up and left the room closing the door quietly behind him. Neil sighed and looked back out the window again; watching Christy he soon feel fast asleep. Part/Chapter: 4 Summery: Neil has recovered from surgery and tells Christy part of what happened. Christy is filled with questions that Neil has no desire to burden her with. Disclaimer: All rights of Catherine Marshall's "Christy" belong to the Marshall~ LeSourd family. Christy will live in the hearts and minds of fans forever. The next morning Neil was out of bed ready to go back to his duties, but he was still a bit sore. Christy was very quiet waiting for Neil to tell her everything and wondering if she wanted to know or not. ‘I wish he would tell me,’ thought Christy looking at her still full breakfast plate. “Christy?” A Scottish brogue interrupted her thoughts, “You’ve been staring at your food for the last 10 minutes, care to tell me what’s on your mind?” Not really wanting to tell him, I picked up my fork and started eating, avoiding eye contact with Neil. Glancing only for a moment at David sitting across from me. Neil followed my gaze and figured out why I didn’t feel free to talk yet. “Well that’s better.” Was all he said and no one said another word, but I could feel David’s eyes on me. *~*~*~*~* Later in the day I was at the schoolhouse teaching the children and I seen Neil leave. He rode his horse over by the front of the school looked back at me and waved before he rode off. I sighed, ‘I really wanted to talk to him.’ I thought. The rest of the school day didn’t pass quickly, Creed Allen and Sam Houston were planning something, but I didn’t know what. They kept distracting the class whispering back and forth. Finally I got sick of it. “Creed Allen and Sam Houston!” They both stopped whispering and sat up straight in their chairs and looked at me, “Whatever you two have been talking about must be very important.” I said looking at them. “Yes, ma’am it sure is!” Sam Houston piped up, and Creed gave him a glare. “I mean no ma’am.” I looked at both of them and sighed, ‘What am I going to do with them?’ I took a deep breath, “If you two don’t stop talking in class and pay attention to your lesson then I will have to make you stay later. Do you understand?” they both nodded, “Good, now let’s get back to work.” The rest of the day went by and Creed and Sam Houston paid more attention, but before to long Ruby Mae and Lizzette were at it. “Okay,” I said bringing the class to attention, “I would like to know why everyone’s attention seems to be distracted today. Anyone care to give me an answer?” No one raised their hands. I looked over the room and the children had their heads down or weren’t looking at me, “Okay, then I expect everyone to pay attention. I don’t want any more interruptions. Is that understood?” A chorus of “Yes, ma’am” went around the room. The day finally ended within a few minutes of my lecture to the class, and I let out a long sigh of relief. ‘I sure am glad it’s Friday!’ I thought as I packed up my books and cleaned the room. I was heading out the door thinking if I should go see Neil or not when David stopped me at the door. “Can I walk you home?” he said politely. I smiled and took his arm. We walked to the mission in silence, and David let me go at the door. “I have chores to do.” Trying to explain. I nodded and headed inside. I hurried upstairs and put my things away checking myself in the mirror I hurried back out the door. As I was going out the door I met Ruby Mae coming in, “I don’t think I will be here for supper, Ruby Mae. I am going to Doctor MacNeill’s, to make sure he’s all right.” And I quickly hurried down the steps and to the barn before Ruby Mae could pry any further. I saddled Prince and rode off. I was just about to Neil’s cabin when something made the hair on my neck stand up on end. I didn’t want to stop so I urged Prince to a faster pace, and as I did I heard a shot and a pain in my arm I screamed and Prince spooked and took off. I fell of him and my whole world went black. Part/Chapter: 5 Summery: Christy spends a long day teaching the school children and they where being rambunctious. After school Christy leaves to go to Neil’s where she is shot and fallen off Prince. He looked down at the young girl lying on the ground, “That’s the teacher?” at the young boys nod, “She mighty fine to be a teacher. I reckon we better scoot before someone catches us then.” And the two men hurried though the woods. *~*~*~*~* Neil was shaving (or rather trying to) it wasn’t easy with one arm hurting like crazy every time he moved it. Just then he heard a shot and a scream, “Christy!” he threw his razor down and grabbed his rifle as he headed towards the mission not caring he had cut himself when he heard the shot. He found me laying on the ground unconscious. He looked at the rock where my head was resting, and looked around to see Prince’s hoof tracks headed back to the mission. He was concerned for me, but he didn’t want to move me just yet, so he continued to look around and found two sets of footprints coming up to me and leading away. ‘Someone did this on purpose!’ He thought and he looked back at me, ‘Why would anyone want to hurt her?’ Neil picked me up and took me to his cabin. Where he quickly examined me. “Doctor MacNeill!” Dan’s voice said as reached the cabin. He knocked and came in his cabin to find Neil leaning over me with my hair down checking my head. “What happened?” Dan asked rushing to Neil’s side. “I don’t know. I heard a shot and a scream and found her with her head on a rock. My assumption is that someone shot her, which spooked Prince he took of and she fell and hit her head on the rock. I found footprints where she was laying. Will you go to the mission and tell them what’s happened and go after them?” Dan nodded and quickly hurried off to the mission, “Don’t worry lass,” Neil said softly, “They won’t hurt you again.” *~*~*~*~* The people of the Cove searched and searched, but they couldn’t find anyone. Meanwhile Christy still had not regained consciousness. It was the third day and I woke up with a terrible headache. I groaned softly and turned away from the sunlight penetrating through the room, and as I did my eyes fell upon Neil. ‘What’s he doing in my room?’ I thought and as I looked around I realized I wasn’t in my room, but in Neil’s. My eyes settled on Neil again and he woke up, “Christy you’re awake! Does you head hurt? Can you see?” He quickly cam to my side and began looking my head over. “OWW!!!” I said as Neil touched a sore spot. “Sorry.” “What happened?” I asked Neil as he sat down beside me. He explained his side, and then waited as I explained mine. I was glad I remembered and by Neil’s look I could tell he was too. Neil looked away from me for a moment, “It’s all my fault.” He said. Part/Chapter: 6 (Final) Summery: Christy regains consciousness and Neil begins to tell her what had happened. “Why is it your fault?” I asked confused. “I should have told you everything when I was shot.” He turned and looked at me, “I will now.” He took a deep breath, “I was out riding the day I was shot and came across Birds-Eye. He was looking for Lundy. He told me that he thought he might be with some of his old pals, but he couldn’t be certain. I asked him why, and he told me he wasn’t in the moonshining business anymore. I was very surprised at that, and I again asked him why. He told me that ever since Lundy was sick he been thinking more and more about God and the things he’s done. He got to the point where making moonshine didn’t interest him anymore.” I looked at him in surprise and opened my mouth to say something, but Neil held his hand up and stopped me. “Please wait until I am finished. Anyways, I thought I would do Birds-Eye a favor and went looking around for him, and that’s when I stumbled across more then I bargained for. There was Lundy all right, along with Birds-Eye’s old gang making moonshine.” Neil stopped, and looked right at me, “They were talking and I know that they had been stealing, and not only that, but I overheard one of the guy’s say he killed a man. That’s when I hurried out of there, but as I did I stepped on a stupid twig and it snapped. I really took off then and they knew whom I was. I’m sorry Christy, but I think they shot at you, because of me.” I looked at him trying to figure it all out in my head, “You aren’t the one who shot me Neil, and you can’t be sure it was them, can you?” Neil shook his head, “Well then don’t blame yourself. I shouldn’t have came her by myself knowing what had happened to you.” I smiled at him and he smiled back, “Now, how soon can I go home, and get back to teaching?” *~*~*~*~* By the next day I was feeling a lot better and was teaching school. Neil stopped by to check on me several times and warned me to be careful, not only with my head injury, but with the moonshiners still around. As I was heading back to the mission… “Teacher! Teacher wait up!” Ruby Mae called. I stopped and turned to see Ruby Mae and Bessie coming towards me with smiles on their face. I smiled back, “What is it Ruby Mae?” I asked. “Rob Allen and John Spencer asked us to go fer another walk. So I won’t be able to make dinner. Can you do it fer me?” “Of course I can.” Both of the girls giggled. “Me and John Spencer patched things up Miss Christy, and I am so excited!” Bessie said. “Ruby Mae!! Bessie!! Are you girls comin’ or not?” John called. They both looked at me and giggled as they turned and headed off where the boys where waiting. I smiled, ‘Young love.’ I thought. Just then I heard a wagon rolling in, and voice calling out, “Miss Huddleston!” I turned to see Jeb driving a wagon with Uncle Bogg beside him and a bunch of men tied up in the back and Neil riding beside them. I hurried over. “Look what we found!” Neil said as he got down off of Charlie. I looked at the men and then a Neil at my horrified expression Neil said softly, “We are meeting the Marshall here, otherwise I would have never brought them here. I’m sorry.” He reached up with his index finger and ran it down my cheek. It felt like fire. “It’s alright. But how… where… ???” I asked confused. “David has kindly let us use the shed over there and Uncle Bogg will be standing guard. The Marshall should be here soon, so you don’t have to worry about a thing. Now how’s that head of yours?” Neil asked. “It’s fine.” “Any blurred vision, anything like that?” Neil prodded as we walked to the mission. “No.” “Humm…” Neil said. “What?” I asked. “Well usually when there is a head injury as severe as yours was there is always some type of …” Neil stopped talking. “Well it doesn’t matter. As long as you're okay.” The End?
