A favorite scene, From Christy we must choose. And so, I think and rack my brain. Til I’m utterly confused. It’s hard to pick out only one, How could you even ask?! To say it’s this one over that, You’ve set us quite a task! The “Pilot” set the pace, With Christy falling in the river. And when the Doctor fished her out, It gave me such a shiver! But later, when the fire, Had knocked her on the head, MacNeil’s quiet vigil, Late at night by Christy’s bed.... Had me thinking - Oh, it’s this one, That I’d rather choose instead! Until...... They showed us “Lost and Found”. Oh, that was very good! My thoughts went reeling all around, Just 1? As if I could?! When Christy walked with David, To the Schoolhouse steps at night, And then he tried to kiss her, Beneath the moon so bright -- Or....... Was it when she talked with Neil, ‘Bout babies, birds and bees?! The ways of mountain-loving, Neil laughed at her and teased! But when he questioned what she thought, Of God and her religion! Neil angered Christy, and she said, “He’s way too cold and rigid!” Til Little Burl was injured, And gave them such a fright! The gentle hands that healed him Showed her Neil in another light. Now..... I would have stopped at that scene, But “Both Your Houses” came along. When Opal’s little baby died, My heart knew a sad song. Then Christy challenged Neil’s commitment, But he answered, “Don’t you dare!” “I am a man of science - For these people I do care!” Of course there was Miss Alice, When ol’ Birds Eye started trouble, With the 27th Psalm she faced him, And he took off on the double! Then later on the Mission porch, There was that touching part - With Opal sick, and Tom away, It worried Christy’s heart. Yet Neil was there to comfort, With a hand upon her shoulder. And I thought - Oh boy! They’re gonna kiss! But all he did was hold her. (drat!) They tried to hang that Birds Eye, For what he didn’t do. But Christy talked to Opal, And together they came through. Bogg cut him down and let him go, For which Birds Eye was grateful. Then Opal pointed out to Tom, That feuding’s wrong and hateful! So, it had a happy ending. Neil said, “Christy, I’m impressed!” She smiled and gently answered him, “You ain’t seen nothing yet!” “The wonder lies with God my friend, No miracle I performed.” “It only seems that way to you, For the Father guides in what I do!” I thought, Oh yes! I like this fine. But then, lo and behold, The TV guide said, look it’s time, For “Judgement Day” so bold! And when Neil said, “I see it all, You really are so brave.” “For riding through the thunderstorm, Miss Alice’ life you saved!” Christy merely smiled, reminding him, “Ferrand knew what to do.” Neil shook his hand and told her, “No! It really was just you!” And then he said to Christy, “It’s time you called me Neil.” My heart just melted, and I wondered, Is this guy for real?!! He said, “You know the secret, hidden deep inside my lab.” “And I’m wondrin’ if you’ll keep it, Lest my neighbor’s worry bad?!” Christy nodded, ever gracious, Then looked Neil in the eye! She was being quite flirtatious, And my heart let out a sigh!! But..... Then the story darkened, As I watched “Eye of The Storm.” And the talk turned more to Margaret, I should of been forewarned! Neil said, “I have an offer, And I might leave Cutter Gap.” Christy looked at him astounded! Asking, “How can you do that?!” “For these people here, they need you, It just wouldn’t be the same!” Her heart beat softly ‘me too!’ ‘I wish that you’d remain.’ But Becky’s eyes were frightening, So they braved the wind and rain. Christy took her straight to Neil, In the hope he’d ease the pain. Safe by the fire they sheltered, As for Becky’s eyes they cared. But Christy’s absence worried David. For her welfare, he was scared. Neil diagnosed Trachoma, Telling Christy, “There’s no cure.” “The research is untested, And I can’t really be sure.” Christy said, “You have a gift, God has given you the right!!” “Your God is too demanding!!” Neil’s voice thundered in the night! They talked together later, And he told her of his wife. “We really were unhappy, It was not a pleasant life.” Christy nodded, understanding, “I believe in what you do!” Neil looked at her so softly, For he knew her heart was true. But....... Then “Amazing Grace” came, And imagine my surprise?! When despite a budding romance, Margaret’s presence did arise! Meeting Neil at Hattie’s cabin, Christy offered to cook dinner. With the glances they exchanged.... I thought - wow! This one’s a winner! Neil said, “I’ll ride you home” Giving such a smoldering look - The delight on Christy’s face And I really was quite hooked! My heart leapt up with joy! Love was surely in the air! But then along came Margaret, And I said, ‘That isn’t fair!’ The struggle that Miss Alice had, With Margaret made me sad. With Christy in the Chapel. Alice said, “She’s not all bad.” Astonished Christy answered - “But to let you think she’s drowned?” “When all that time you worried, She was in Atlanta- town?!” Alice shook her head so tearfully, “My faith it was quite weak.” “I should have seen more clearly, But God’s Light I did not seek.” And then the look on Neil’s face. When he saw his one-time wife! Showed clearly all the hurt, That she’d brought into his life. Christy counseled Neil with sad eyes, “Margaret’s sin you must forgive.” “You cannot run away from this, You must seek peace to live.” And so the sun set in the Cove, Their hearts still stung with grief. Margaret’s return held no joy. Their pain knew no relief. Til Hattie sang ‘Amazing Grace,’ Her notes swelled in the air, And all who heard and could believe, Would find sweet healing there. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Favorite Scenes - Part 2 of 2 It took awhile for CBS To get it’s act in gear. But finally, they brought it back, This TV show so dear. The much anticipated 2nd season came along. And then my heart began to sing A very joyful song! And so at last they aired, A lovely episode, It really was a favorite, This “To Have and To Hold!” When Ida clashed with David, Over marrying her Clarence, It really was unusual, This letter-writing romance! But Ida took control and said, “You cannot run my life!” “Sweetwater is a good man, I would like to be his wife.” David really was distracted, He had loving on his mind. So he proposed to Christy - “Would you marry me so kind?” Christy couldn’t quite believe it, When he offered her a ring. She needed time to think, For marriage is a serious thing! “Ruby Mae! You must be quiet!” Christy said, “This is a secret.” But when the school girls giggled, Christy worried, she’d not keep it. The girls said, “Tell us about love!” As up the hill they walked. And Christy answered back to them, “Well, it’s more than pillow talk.” “Oh sure, you whisper sweet things, and maybe steal a kiss.” “But marriage is important, It’s so much more than this.” Neil came quietly behind her, Christy’s cheeks they turned quite red. And he chuckled, “yes! That’s for sure. What put marriage in your head?!” Neil’s’ presence had a tendency, To really fluster Christy. Her heart would pound, her mind confuse, Her thoughts get vague and misty. Neil looked at her quite longingly, In a deep voice said with glee - “Miss Huddleston, I’m wonderin’ Do you think you’ll miss me?!” Christy glanced up in astonishment, Did she really hear him say that? Neil chuckled at the look on her, Replying, “I’ll be in Low Gap.” “Can you see to Lundy Taylor, While I’m gone for that short time?” Christy answered, very firmly, “Yes, I’m sure we’ll do just fine!” I thought that scene would do me in! My heart began to pound. I almost turned the TV off, To calm my pulse rate down. But no, I didn’t do it, This one show I could not miss. And my head began to palpitate, When Christy David kissed! Then Ida’s wedding day drew near, It gave me such a thrill! To see her all dressed up in white, Walking slowly down the hill. When Hattie’s voice sang sweetly, The Hymn, ‘O Perfect Love,’ One could almost feel the blessing, Of God from up above! Then Christy dreamt of wedding David, Til quite suddenly awakened. With Neil MacNeil right next to her - “Is this spot beside you taken?” Christy gently nodded up at him, A smile upon her face. “Oh no, you’re just in time,” She said. My heart began to race!! But..... Then I viewed “Babe In The Woods,” When the children, always kind, Attended school one morning, And a baby they did find. Neil said, “She’s rather colicky, and will need lots of attention.” Christy answered, “Not to worry, For we’ll keep her at the Mission!” She nodded to the Reverend, “On school lessons I must pass.” Then Neil and David both spoke up, “We’ll gladly take your class!” David talked about his baseball, And their rivalry got hot. But Neil was not to be outdone, He was a stubborn Scot! And so he came before them, dressed completely to the hilt, So proudly wearing of the plaid, A MacNeil/Barra kilt! He showed them how to pound in stakes, And boldly toss the caber. David struggled to keep up with him, It was hard and weary labor! But then the baby couldn’t breath, Giving Christy such a fright! Opal made a poultice for her, Doc MacNeil said, “That was right.” Christy made her peace with Opal, saying - “You should be this baby’s mother.” “For you would love her dearly, And right now she has no other.” Baby Iris went to Church that day, For the Reverend to bless. Dan questioned Christy’s sacrifice, “Love gives me more, not less.” She told him oh, so wisely, With a twinkle in her eyes, “There’s much more to these mountains, Than you would at first surmise.” The story ended sweetly, There was laughter in the air. As David looked at Neil, Saying, “Please pull up a chair!” They sat and stared intently, As each grabbed the others hand. And wrestled with impunity, To show the better man. Christy glanced at them indulgently, They were such a funny sight. Especially as they struggled hard, And long into the night. And.... When this episode was done, My heart said yes! This is the one! But then “Green Apples” came, And I could not believe my eyes!! When they showed Neil in the river - I said, Gee! This takes the prize!!!! Then the night she cooked him dinner, Neil held Christy in a dance, My heart beat oh, so loudly, At the thought of this romance! But Neil saw right through Christy, “I’ll not be part of this plot!” So Christy left him lonely, Saying, “You’re a stubborn Scot!!” And then the fever came along, And death drew very near. It frightened all the Cove-folk, For their children they did fear. They wanted to blame someone, And looked straight to Daniel Scott. But Neil sent all the parents home, And said, “Oh no, you’ll not!” So then - together they kept watch, O’er the children late that night. Christy said, “It’s all my fault!” Neil replied, “No, that’s not right!” He sat down close beside her, And then Neil apologized. “I was wrong to lose my temper, And to yell. That wasn’t wise.” “If you could look more clearly, Then maybe you would see,” “I was angry that you cared for Dan, When I wished it had been me!” ‘Be still, my beating heart,’ I cried. As tension filled the air. But the story just continued, There was so much more to share. We learned of Daniel’s friendship, And the love of Hattie’s kindness. She saw the good inside his heart, To color she turned blindness. Then Creed got lost, the fever grew, It near sickened him to death. Til Neil injected Veronal, Creed wouldn’t leave them yet. They laid upon him loving hands, And prayed with faith and tears. That God’s Grace hover near to them, And save this child so dear. And then..... Neil lectured Christy, “I’ve worked, One long day at a time.” “To earn the trust of everyone, And things are going fine!” “If I take Dan on to help me, Then their confidence I’ll lose.” “You don’t make sense Miss Huddleston, Dan’s help I will not choose!” But Christy looked Neil in the eye, And said with voice so steady, “It’s time to open up your heart, I think that you are ready.” “It’s been too long a time now, And since your wife has left.” “You’ve closed your heart to others, As inside yourself you’ve kept.” Neil turned and looked so sweetly, When Christy said, “now don’t be scared.” He replied to her quite gently, “I do already care!” I heaved a sigh, and said, “Oh yes!” “This one is just the best!” For my heart was not at all prepared, For what they showed us next! “The Road Home” was the last one, Then the series would conclude. To the love ‘tween Neil and Christy, They would constantly allude. I had to laugh so loudly, When Neil cautioned Daniel Scott, “Would my dance in the altogether, ‘Neath the moon disrupt your thoughts?!” (sigh!) But then Neil counseled further, “Keep yer wits about you man!” “Birds Eye’s jealous of your friendship With my dear Aunt Hattie, Dan.” Then Christy later came to Neil, To seek out his advice. He told her not to fret - Of the tea-house, don’t think twice! Neil said, ‘Talking to the men, Is in the domain of the preacher.” Christy’s eyes filled up with sorrow, So he raised his hand to reach her. With a soft and gentle stroke, Neil so tenderly brushed her cheek, And my heart near skipped a beat, For I thought that scene so sweet! Then Neil took Christy down with him, To stand beside the stream. When he put his arms around her, It seemed like such a dream. Neil told her not to worry, Then taught Christy how to fish. She found great solace with him, For the river was his gift. “Have you been to the tea-house?” Christy then of Neil inquired? Neil’s blue eyes look right up at her, And tenderly he smiled. “The beauty that I find here, On this river can’t compare,” “With anything they have to offer At the tea-house there.” “I ask you to remember, this advice, From an old hand,” “The dance is always more important Than the frying pan!” Despite my sigh, The story moved on. Heading to a strange conclusion. Their relationship was growing strong, I loved the sweet romance! But then it halted to a stop, When Margaret came to dance. She hurt her mother terribly, And caused her such great pain, Alice tried so hard to love her, But it really was a strain! “I have tried to do my best for you, Yet you’ve given me such strife.” “I grant your wish dear Margaret, You’ve no room inside my life!” The story got quite heavy, And it took a serious turn. When Creed smoked rabbit tobacco, And Daniel’s cabin burned. Christy’s heart hurt and she needed, To visit Neil MacNeil. So she sought him out to talk, And to see what he did feel. He said he spoke with Margaret, And her pain he did forgive. For the past it was behind him. And the time was now to live. Neil smiled and put on Christy's head, A lovely floral wreath. And then looked deeply on her eyes, That scene it was sooooo neat!! Then Fairlight talked to Christy, And asked her questions true. She saw things clear with Neil now, Christy knew what she must do! She saddled Prince and rode to Neil’s, Her feelings she must share! But Margaret had a change of heart, And was already there! “I want to please come home, Mac For I have no place to go.” “It’s you I’ve only truly loved, And I’m scared, if you must know!” Margaret’s face was sad and lonely. Her cheeks were streaked with tears. Neil put his arms around her, For he understood her fears. Christy saw them there together, And then sorrow filled her heart. So she turned the steed around, As her tears began to drop. David waited at the schoolhouse, And her sadness gave him pain. So he put his arms around her, He was glad to him she came. David held her tightly to his chest, Then he whispered in her ear, “I have a little something, That I’d like to give you dear.” “I love you so much Christy, And I’d like to marry you.” Christy looked at David’s beaming face. Her heart began to pound. But then the sound of hoof beats, Made her turn and look around. She glanced at David - then at Neil, Her heart filled with confusion! And then the story ended, We were left with no conclusion! So Vicky..... In spite of all this rhyming, And the parts that I have mused on, Favorite scenes you asked for, But my friend, I simply cannot choose one! The End!
