Never Forsaken Chapter 1 I was heavy, so heavy. My eyelids were leaden. They would not open. The familiar voice, a man’s voice, very soft. He was talking to me, calling me. “Christy, Christy, you've got to come back to me. Christy wherever you are, listen to me…Christy, I love you, love you, love you. Christy, can you hear me? I love you! You cannot leave me without knowing this. Christy--” And then the tone of the words changed. “God, I have fought against You because I have not understood. Not only fought, God, but cursed You. I did not understand why You let Margaret die - and our son. I did not understand anything about You. I still don’t understand anything - except that somehow I know You are love. And that in my heart has been born so great a love for Christy as I did not know could exist on this earth. You, God, must be responsible. You must have put it there. So what do I do with it now?” The voice broke. The bedclothes muffled a man’s sobs. I wanted to comfort the man in some way. I tried to lift my hand, but it was to heavy. Still my eyelids would not open. The voice was hoarse with emotion. “Lord God almighty, Lord God of heaven and of earth, I have been stiff-necked and proud, arrogant and stupid. I m not worthy of-of anything, least of all to ask any favors of You.” The voice paused. The room was very quiet. I could hear the sharp intake of the man’s breath. “Lord God, You are the Creator, I am the created. I am helpless, as helpless as all other men. As a doctor, I thought I knew something. Now there is nothing more that I can do for Christy. Nothing at all. “So I offer back to you this love you gave. It’s all I have to give You, God. Here are our lives-hers and mine-I hold them out to you. Do-with us-as You please.” The voice fell silent. So his was the voice that called me back. Dr. MacNeill’s. He needed me. He loved me. He loved me like that. There was a warm glow in the room. Warmth came into me, starting at the top of my head and flowing steadily downward, into my brain, into my face-my eyelids fluttered open. Familiar objects in the room came into focus. He was still there beside my bed, his head sunk on the covers, one hand stretched out with the bowl of that old pipe of his clutched in it, but the stem of the pipe was broke. It had fallen from his hand and lay on the rumpled covers of the bed. And still the strength and warmth flowed-into my chest, along my arms. I could move my fingers now. I felt across the counterpane until my hand reached his, the big hand with the blond-red hairs on top. My fingers closed over his hand and gripped it. His head came up. “Christy!” The joy of the children was in his voice. “Neil.” was all I said, before Miss Alice, and David came running into the room. I could tell by the looks on their face that they were happy that I was awake. David came and grabbed my hand, “Oh Christy! I thought I was going to lose you! I didn’t know what I would have done if you hadn’t came back!” tears streamed down his face and I was deeply touched. I looked over at Miss Alice and she smiled at me, “I must look awful.” I manage to say. “Thee have never looked better.” Miss Alice began, “Thy parents have been very worried about thee, and they are on their way here. They should be here by tomorrow.” A sigh escaped my lips, and I looked at Neil there was such an expression on his face that I felt better just looking at him. Neil grabbed a cup by my bedside and filled it with water. “Here,” he began, “try to drink as much of this as you can.” I released David’s hand as Neil helped me sit up and very gently he gave me the water. I drank most of the water and then I lay back down exhausted. “That was good. Thank you.” “I think that thee needs to rest before thy parents come. David, Neil we should leave Christy alone to get some rest.” Then she turned and left the room, and David followed her. Neil looked at me, and said, “Is there anything I can do for you? Anything I can get you?” I looked at him and smiled, “Yes, try to get some sleep.” He grinned, “Yes, doctor, anything else?” I pretended to think about it and I said, “Now that you ask…” He chuckled and headed out the door, and before to long I was asleep. I woke to Neil shaking my arm, “Christy, I need you to try to eat some of this soup, as much as you can okay?” At my nod he helped me sit up. Then he grabbed the bowl and spoon and said, “Here you go. I tried to make it so it wasn’t to hot...” I took the bowl and spoon and tried some, “Hum…. It’s just right, thank you.” As I sat there and ate my soup Neil started talking, “Everyone has been worried about you, and they have been checking up on you so there is some people downstairs who would love to see you.” “Are my parents here yet?” I asked. “No they won’t be here until later this afternoon.” “Good.” I said, and Neil gave me a strange look. I looked at him sheepishly, “I would like to get cleaned up a bit before they come. Would it be okay for me to get up?” “If you eat all that soup, then I will think about it, but right now I don’t think you should.” Neil said as I took another sip of my soup. He seemed to be thinking about something, and he didn’t say another word. I finished my soup, and was feeling much better. “I’m done, now will I be able to get up?” Neil looked at me in surprise as he took the empty bowl and the spoon. “I will send Miss Alice up to help you, but don’t try to get up until she is up here to help you.” Neil had such a stern look on his face, that I chuckled, and said “I won’t.” “Good,” and then he left. Miss Alice came up and helped me get cleaned up and dressed. “I don’t know what I would do without you Miss Alice.” I gave her a hug, “Thank you.” “Thee are welcome. Now lay back down, here thee go.” Miss Alice helped me back to bed. “Now are thee up to a few visitors?” I looked at her, “How many is a few?” She smiled at me, “Thee will see,” and she left the room. I did see. Through out most of the morning almost every one of my students had been there to see me, and some of their parents. When Jeb and the kids came in I told them about my dream or had it been a dream? I didn’t know. My parents came around 2 o’clock that afternoon, and to my disbelief my brother, George was with them! “Hey sis! This place sure is a lot different then the city! I can’t believe you stayed here!” I chuckled at his facial expression. “What?” “Oh I just realized how much I miss you, that’s all.” I grinned. He blushed and I laughed out loud. My parents joined in. “My girlie, I have missed you so much,” my dad said. “Well,” my mother began, and by the sound of her voice I was dreading what she would say next, “we won’t be missing you anymore. As soon as you are well you are coming back to Ashville with us.” I opened my mouth to protest, “No arguments. You need to come home,” and by the look on my mother’s face I knew she was serious. Part/Chapter: 2 Over the next few days I got better, but I tried not to show it. I didn’t want to go back to Ashville. I wanted to stay here I belonged here. My mother persisted on me coming home, and I didn’t ague with her. Miss Alice had to leave and go to Low Gap and I told her good-bye. I was so sad to be leaving and not seeing her. I told her I was sorry, but she told me not worry everything would work out, but I couldn’t help but think if it really would. No one else in the Cove got sick after me, and I was so glad that it was over. I was worried that one of the children would get sick or even die and I wouldn’t be there for them. I wouldn’t have been able to deal with that very well. Neil had told Miss Alice and David (and soon the whole Cove knew) that he had given his life over to God. There was lots of rejoicing. Neil didn’t say much about that day, not to me anyways. David was still had feelings for me, and he wanted to be near me all the time. I wasn’t sure what to tell him, because I realized I didn’t really know how I felt. When I found out Neil loved me, I couldn’t get him out of my mind. ‘What was I going to do?’ I thought. ‘David deserves an answer, but how can I tell him when I don’t even know my own feelings for him? And Neil… I smiled to myself, the prayer was more touching then any of David’s prayers, and he had said he loved me.’ “What are you thinking about?” a voice interrupted my thoughts. I looked up to see my brother, George, looking at me with a grin on his face. Blushing I said, “Oh nothing.” “Yah, I’m sure,” my brother said. “Maybe a certain person I know? A man?” “George, leave your sister alone.” My mother said as she swept into the room, “She doesn’t have to tell you her thoughts.” She turned to me, “Sweetheart how are you feeling today?” “I am feeling okay mother.” I said, and I was about to go further but I bit my tongue. How was my Mother ever going to understand that I wanted to stay here? That I loved it here, and I felt as though I belonged here? “That is good, my dear, we should be leaving soon then. There is so much shopping to do before Christmas. We need to get some dress for the dances….” And she was off talking about all the parties we would be attending. George looked at me and made a face. He knew how much I hated the dances and how much I wanted to stay here. “Mom,” he interrupted, “why don’t we go for a walk? It’s such a nice day.” I knew he was trying to save me. “That would be lovely.” My mom replied. “Just as soon as I pack up these things for Christy.” And she started packing some of my stuff. “I’ll wait for you downstairs then,” George said. Then he turned to me he gave me an apologetic look. I sighed, ‘Maybe my going home would help me sort out these feelings I have, ’ I thought. David and Neil came into the room, ‘Then again maybe not.’ “Christy, how are you feeling?” David said as he came and sat down next to my bed. “I am feeling better.” I looked over at my mother, and sighed. “Christy, I wish you would quit sighing, I am not going to change my mind. We miss you at home, and I think a break from all this would do you good.” She said as she glanced at David and Neil. ‘That’s when I seen that she was right! I could go home, and I figure out these feelings. I could figure out where I belonged and whom I belonged to. I loved the Cove, but is this where I belonged or was it somewhere else? Sure, I didn’t like Ashville with all the parties and everything, but maybe I could go west and…’ my thoughts where interrupted. “Christy, you really need to get out of bed.” My mother said. “I agree with your mother.” Neil said and it looked like he was going to say something else, but David interrupted. “Yes, Christy why don’t we take a walk? We could go down by the pond.” Before I could answer my mother looked at me and said, “Christy I think that you should go with your brother and show him the Cove. I believe he really would like it. I was going to go, but there is so much packing that needs to be done.” I opened my mouth to speak, “You go on now he is waiting downstairs. I can do this packing.” I felt a rush of relief and I looked at Neil and David they both had looks of disappointment. I turned back to my mother, “Okay, Mother I will go, but are you sure you don’t want to come along?” “No you go ahead.” She turned to David and Neil, “I need your help…” I hurried out the door anxious to get out of their way. When I got downstairs I told George that we are going on a walk, and he took my arm and we left. When I told him what happened he chuckled. “What’s funny?” George chuckled some more, “Both of them have had - how shall I say this - a nice lengthily chat with Father, and I happen to know what it was about.” I stopped and looked at him, “What? What was it about?” “Hey you got your secrets and I have mine.” He said grinning. We started walking again. ‘Okay so he wasn’t going to tell me I knew that, so now what? I can keep bugging him, or I can pretend I don’t care. I think I will pretend I don’t care.’ “Well, George, Mother told me to show you the Cove, and you will get to see it all right.” I grinned wickedly. “You are? Well sis, lead way.” ‘Darn, that didn’t work. Oh well. I love him and he will tell me when he’s good and ready.’ I thought, ‘Besides I am sure he knows what I was up too.’ “Well let’s see where shall we go first….” Over the next few days I was busy packing, and getting ready to go. I was beginning to get excited about going home. I could spend some times with my old friends, and pick on my brother. I grinned now that would be fun! I glanced over at George; he didn’t know what was coming to him! David was trying to catch me alone or talk me into going for a walk. I knew that he wanted to know my answer, but I wasn’t able to give him one, at least not now. And then there was Neil… how did I feel about him? I just didn’t know. We hadn’t spent that much time together and when we did I usually would get mad or upset By something he said or did. It was all so frustrating! I was glad I was going home. Part/Chapter: 3 The day had come when I was to leave the Cove, and many people came to see me. My children didn’t want me to go, and I was heart-broken to see them so upset by me leaving. Mountie had such sad eyes, and I didn’t want to leave. I looked at my mother who was watching it all. “Christy, I said you needed to come home, I didn’t say you couldn’t come back.” She said quietly as she turned to look at the children again. Tears streamed down my face. My mother had seen why I loved it here so much, and I was so happy that I would be able to come back. As I walked over to the wagon that we would be traveling in I seen David. I looked at my parents who were walking with me to the wagon. “I need to talk to David alone before we leave. Is that okay?” At their nods I walked over to him. “I think that we should talk a few minutes before we leave. Is that alright?” He smiled, “Yes I would like that very much. How about we walk over there?” “Yes.” As we walked over to the spot he indicated I began to talk, “David, I wish I could give you an answer on your proposal, but I can’t not right now. I need to sort out my feelings for you. When I come back I hope I can give you an answer. But right now I just can’t, I’m sorry.” Then I looked at him, his jaw was tight and he didn’t look too happy. “I am going to miss you, Christy. I had hoped you could give me an answer - I don’t know why you can’t - but I will wait as long as it takes Christy, I will wait for you.” He said as he took my hand and looked into my eyes. “I will wait.” “Thank you, David. I know this must be hard for you to do, but I am glad you are going to wait for me.” “Christy!! We need to go now. Come on!” My brother called. “I need to go now, David. I’ll miss you, good-bye.” I let go of his hand and left. As I climbed into the wagon with my family I looked back to David, and he waved good-bye. Tears streamed down my face as I watched the children, and I waved good-bye to all of them. ‘Where is Neil?’ I wondered, ‘He must be on a call…’ When I got home the first few days went by in a whirl, but I thought about everyone from the Cove all the time. My mom had me taken to Mrs. Rockford (our dressmaker) and had fittings for dance dresses and other clothes. I insisted I didn’t really need them, but she told me my clothes were out of style and I needed new ones. So I decided to let her have her way, at least she was going to let me go back. I still couldn’t sort out my feelings, so I prayed and prayed. When I felt like I wasn’t getting an answer I fasted. Christmas came and went in a swirl of activity. I tried to be happy, but I couldn’t help but think about what was going on in the Cove. I mean here I was getting enough food, and having a wonderful time when people at the Cove were half starving. George never would tell me what went on when David and Neil had a chat with Daddy. ‘Could they asked Daddy if they could court me? Or did they tell him… ’ I kept thinking about it all the time. Finally the day before my train was going to leave I got this peace, and I knew what I needed to do. I talked to Daddy and I had told him how I felt and he just smiled and listened to me. “My girlie, just wait and see what happens. The Lord told us not to worry, or be anxious. God knows what he is doing, and he has a perfect timing for everything. When it’s time you will know what to do and say, just seek God he’ll never leave you nor forsake you. Come here.” He stood up and opened his arms and I went into them. “Thank you, Father,” I began, “You’ve helped me out a lot. I love you.” “I love you too, Christy. Now go on and finish your packing.” My dad said as he gave me a love pat on the butt. When I left I ran into my brother George, “Hey sis. You’re just the person I was looking for. I have a question… What would a girl like more flowers or something more expensive like some jewelry?” I looked at him as if he was crazy then it dawned on me, “Well George you don’t like someone do you?” I teased. He turned red, “Christy, just answer the question for me, please.” I looked at him and I knew he was serious; he never looked twice at a girl let alone buy anything for one. “Well I guess it depends on the girl. I personally would like flowers.” He grinned, “Thanks sis! I owe you one.” He gave me a peck on the check and went on down the hall. I wonder whom it is that he likes? How annoying! I wish I knew! Ugh… Now I was going to the Cove and I wouldn’t find out. Oh well I am sure I will find out sooner or later. I finished packing and was ready to go by the next day. I was actually going to miss Ashville, but I was happier to be going home. “Christy, dear, we are going to miss you.” My mom said as she gave me a hug, “I hope you had a wonderful time, and don’t stay away from us too long.” “I won’t, Mother.” I said as I looked at her. ‘She is changed a lot while I was gone. I was glad about that.’ I turned to my brother George, “You better keep in touch with me,” I said and I winked at him. He blushed a bit and gave me a hug. “I’ll miss you, sis. Remember I love you, and I’m behind you all the way.” “Thanks George. I love you too.” I turned to my dad, tears streamed down my face. “I am going to miss you, Father.” I said as I gave him a big hug. When we pulled away I looked up and to my surprise I seen tears in his eyes too. “My girlie, I love you so much. Remember God is with you put your trust in him, and if you ever need us we are here for you.” “Thank You, Father.” I looked at them all, “I’m going to miss you all so much.” “All aboard!!!” the conductor yelled. “Good-Bye.” I said as I hurried to get on the train. I sat down by the window and waved to them as the train pulled away. I settled down and began to get excited about going back to the Cove. ‘I wonder what everyone has been up too…’ Part/Chapter: 4 ‘I wish this train would hurry!’ I thought. But the train had to stop for several snowdrifts. The train crew had to go out and shovel the tracks. ‘How am I ever going to walk the Cutter Gap in all this snow? Oh I hope someone can give me a ride, home! This is just like when I first came. I probably will have to stay the night at Mrs. Tatum’s. The hours went on and the train had to stop every mile at least twice. ‘We don’t seem to be getting anywhere!’ I thought. But soon the train started going again. After a while the conductor and said, “El Pano one mile! El Pano one mile!” I was so glad when I heard those words! I would be there soon! I was trying so hard to keep still, but I couldn’t, and I was getting looks from other passengers. ‘Oh I don’t care!’ Another hour (or so it seemed to me), and I got off at El Pano. No one was there to meet me, of course. I hadn’t told anyone, because I was afraid someone would get hurt like last time. I went right over to Mrs. Tatum’s. ‘I am glad Mrs. Tatum’s isn’t that far from the train station!’ When I knocked on the door Mrs. Tatum was surprised to see me. She sent me right in by the fire and gave me some hot tea. Then after I had warmed up she sent me straight to bed. I woke up in the morning, and went to find Mr. Pentland. I couldn’t find him, but I had found out that he hadn’t any mail to deliver anyway. ‘Well it looks like I am going to have to buddle up and start walking. I want to get to the Cove today!’ So off I went I had walked a good 4 miles when the snow started up. ‘Great just what I needed!’ I thought. ‘Now what am I going to do? I guess I better find someplace to wait this out in.’ I started walking looking for a cave or some sort of shelter, and a ½ an hour later I found a Cave and bundled up in it. ‘Well it doesn’t look like I will be going to the Cove today. It’s cold out here.’ I shivered. I started to get really sleepy, and I tried so hard to keep awake, but I couldn’t and I was soon fast asleep. I woke up hours later, but I couldn’t move. ‘What woke me up?’ I wondered. I strained to hear. After a few minutes I heard it. It was a horse. Maybe someone was with it! “Is there someone out there? HELP ME PLEASE!” I shouted with all my might, and my voice echoed in the small cave. I tried to get up again, but it was useless. “Is someone here?” Neil! My heart soared. “Hello?” his Scottish brogue echoed in the cave. “NEIL!” I shouted with all I had. He hurried over to me. “Christy? What are you doing here?” His hand reached out for mine. “Christy you are half frozen! Can you stand up?” When I shook my head, he left and came back with a blanket he wrapped it around me. “I need to get some wood to start a fire. Rub your hands and feet together it will keep them warm.” He left and came back a few minutes later and started a fire. When he got the fire started he came and sat next to me, and pulled off my left shoe and started to rub them to get them warm. When he touched my foot I had this strange feeling that I had never had before. It felt like my heart was going to fly out of my chest. “Soon as we get you warm enough we will head to the Spencer’s cabin, because it’s the closest.” I began to warm up, and I asked Neil, “What were you doing out here?” He looked at me, “Actually I have been wondering the same about you. I didn ’t know you were coming back. I am sure that if you told someone you were coming I would have known.” “I didn’t tell anyone, because I was afraid someone would come and get me and someone would end up hurt like last time. I didn’t want anyone to get hurt because of me.” I said as I pulled the blanket tighter. Neil looked down as he replaced my shoe. “It wasn’t your fault, Christy. You shouldn’t blame yourself. Now try to stand up.” He said as he reached down and helped me up. I stood up a little wobbly and still chilled. “Come on Christy let’s get you to the Spencer’s.” He put out the fire, and grabbed my arm and helped me to his horse. When we got on he said, “Hang on as tight as you can. I don’t want you to fall off.” I held on to the saddle horn tight as he started Charlie in a trot. Though it was cold and my body felt numb my mind was still going. ‘What are my feelings for Neil? Every time I am around him I feel like a child. Then there are times like these when he seems so… oh I don’t know! What is it in his voice that I hear? And then I always get so dizzy why do I get so dizzy when he touches me?’ “We’re almost there, Christy, hold on.” I tried to consecrate on where we were going, but Neil’s arms around me and his breath on my face was taking over my thoughts. ‘I have to concentrate on something else!’ I chided myself. ‘What did Daddy tell me before I left? Oh yes, God will never leave me or forsake me. He has a perfect timing for everything. I don’t have to worry about tomorrow…’ “HELLO!!!” Neil yelled. “WHOA Charlie.” He said as he reigned in his horse. “JEB! I need your help!” Neil’s voice was the last thing I remember hearing. *BOUNS* Neil’s view! Neil was out riding home from a call… ‘God? I know you’re there, because I can feel you. I know it says in your Word that you will never leave me or forsake me, but what about Christy? Will she ever come back to me? Oh God, I have no right feeling this way towards her. She likes David! What I’m I going to do?’ ‘Trust in me.’ Came a whisper. ‘I will God, I will. Forgive me, it’s so hard…’ “Is someone out there? Help me please!” came this voice. ‘That sounds like... no it couldn’t be. “Is someone there? Hello?” “NEIL!” that’s when I seen her. It was Christy! My heart skipped a beat. I hurried over to her. “Christy? What are you doing here?” My hand reached out and grabbed hers. “Christy you are half frozen! Can you stand up?” When she shook her head, I left and came back with a blanket I wrapped it around her. “I need to get some wood to start a fire. Rub your hands and feet together it will keep them warm.” ‘What is Christy doing here? She could have died!’ I fumed as I got wood to start a fire. I quickly came back and started a fire. I sat down next to her and pulled off her shoe, ‘Why do ladies wear these kind of shoes? They must hurt her feet. Her feet are ice cold! Why she mind as well walked in her stockings for a lot of good these did for her!’ “Soon as we get you warm enough we will head to the Spencer’s cabin, because it’s the closest.” It was strange to hear my voice echoing back at me. I looked at her. She looked so frightened. ‘Oh how I wish I could just wrap my arms around her… I have to stop! Christy is half frozen and all I can think about is loving her.’ “What were you doing out here?” She said. I looked at her, “Actually I have been wondering the same about you. I didn ’t know you were coming back. I am sure that if you told someone you were coming I would have known.” “I didn’t tell anyone, because I was afraid someone would come and get me and someone would end up hurt like last time. I didn’t want anyone to get hurt because of me.” she said as she pulled the blanket tighter. I looked down as I replaced her shoe. “It wasn’t your fault, Christy. You shouldn’t blame yourself. Now try to stand up.” I said as I reached down and helped her up. She was still cold I could tell, “Come on Christy let’s get you to the Spencer’s.” I put out the fire, and grabbed her arm and helped her to my horse. When we got on I said, “Hang on as tight as you can. I don’t want you to fall off.” In the back of my mind, ‘What was I thinking? To have Christy this close it’s going to drive me nuts knowing that she likes David! Ughhh!!! Well I have to get her to the Spencer’s somehow.’ “We’re almost there, Christy, hold on.” ‘I hope she doesn’t fall off. Oh just wait until Grantland hears about this! He really won’t like me.’ I grinned. I could see the Spencer’s cabin ahead, “HELLO!!!” WHOA Charlie.” I said as I reigned in my horse. “JEB! I need your help!” I jumped off and quickly grabbed Christy. She was unconscious, so I carried her in my arms, enjoying myself all the way. Chapter 5 I woke up early the next morning and I looked around. ‘Where am I?’ Then I remembered as my eyes adjusted to the darkness and traveled around the room. There was Jeb sleeping in a chair and the children were all bundled up on the other side of the room. Then my eyes seen Neil; he was sleeping in a chair next to my bed. ‘He must have slept there all night!’ I thought. Something stirred inside of me as I looked at Neil, ‘He’s the one for you.’ I sat up and looked around ‘Who said that?’ I wondered. When I seen everyone was still asleep I settled back down. ‘He needs you.’ I looked around again. ‘Christy,’ I heard the voice say again, ‘I am here. This is the time for you to know. He is the one. He loves you.’ ‘God?’ I asked, but he didn’t have to answer I knew. I looked over at Neil, and I knew. I was trying to figure it out in my mind, but the whole time God was trying to speak to me I just wasn’t listening. Neil stirred in his sleep, and then opened his eyes and looked into mine. I looked into his hazel eyes, and right then I wanted to tell him I loved him to have him hold me close, and kiss me. I blushed and looked away. “How are you feeling?” Neil said quietly so he wouldn’t wake anyone. “I have never felt better.” I admitted. “Good. Here,” he said as he gave me a cup of water, “drink this.” I drank the whole cup. “That’s good, now try to get some more rest.” I laid back down, and closed my eyes and soon I was fast asleep. The next morning I woke up and everyone was awake and busy doing chores. I looked around for Neil and when I didn’t find him I was disappointed. “Good morning Christy!” Jeb said. The children all came around me and started asking questions. “Kids! Go finish up your chores.” A chorus of groans filled the air, “But dad!” “Now!” and they took one look at him and when they seen he meant it they left. “Neil had to leave early this morning, Vella Holt is sick. He wanted you to stay here until he comes back to get you or when the weather lets up which ever comes first. Now how about a warm breakfast?” “That would be nice, Jeb. Thank you.” I spent the whole day at the Spencer’s cabin, waiting and praying for Neil. When the weather started to let up Jeb came over to me. “Christy, the weather is letting up, so you better get ready to go. So I can take you over to the mission.” I sighed, “I’ll get ready.” I turned and looked back out the window one last time hoping I would see Neil riding up on his horse, but I didn’t see him. I sighed again and turned from the window. I hurried up and got ready. “Jeb, what if they weather starts up again, and you’re stuck at the mission? What will happen to the children?” “Well I am sending them over to Opal’s. She needs help at her house now with Tom gone and all.” Jeb said with a sad expression on his face, and I knew he was thinking about Fairlight. Tears streamed down my face and I whispered, “I miss her too.” “I know you do, Christy.” Jeb said before he turned to the kids, “You kids behave yourself when you’re at Opal’s. You help her out as much as you can. I will be over there to pick you up as soon as I can.” Jeb turned back to me, “We best be going now.” All of us left the house and headed our own way. The chilly wind blew around me as we headed to the mission. ‘It sure is cold out here.’ I thought. ‘I sure hope Neil isn’t trying to come get me. I wonder how Vella is doing…’ When I got to the mission shivering the first person I seen was Miss Ida. I inwardly groaned. Jeb and I immediately went over to the fire to warm up. Miss Ida began talking, “We did expect you, Christy. Miss Alice is in Big Lick Springs, and David went on a call right before this weather started up. “You’ve been here all alone?” Jeb asked. “Yes. I was fine though. I doubt that anyone would have even strayed out in this weather.” Miss Ida said as she looked at me. I sighed ‘I’m going to be stuck here with her for goodness knows how long! Oh bother! Well I guess that’s better then being cooped up with David knowing how I feel about Neil…’ “Would you like to stay for supper Jeb?” Miss Ida asked. “That’s right nice of you to ask Miss Ida, but I need to go get my younging ’s at Opal’s before this weather gets even worse then it is.” Jeb said stepping away from the fire and toward the door. “Thank you anyways.” He said before he left the house. The chilly blast from the opening and closing of the door just reminded me I was alone with Miss Ida. “Why are you here? We didn’t expect you until spring at least.” Miss Ida said with a scowl. “Miss Ida, I belong here, and I wanted to be here as soon as I could…” I started, but Miss Ida interrupted me. “Well you’re here and you put lives in danger coming here. Just think what might have happen if Jeb gets lost and can’t get back to his children. They already lost their mother.” And with that Miss Ida turned and left the room. ‘That was odd.’ I thought. ‘Miss Ida never showed any concern for the children before. Christy will live in the hearts and minds of fans forever. The next few days Miss Ida and I were alone together, because it was really bad out. Most of the time we didn’t get along, but on the second day… I walked into the parlor and Miss Ida was looking out the window. I stood there silently watching her, why was she always so… so… mad at me? What did I ever do? She turned and looked at me, and I braced myself for an argument. “Ya know,” she said softly, “I’ve never been away from my family for more then one day before. Now I know how you feel.” She stopped talking and I didn’t know what to say, I was to stunned to even speak. She turned to look back out the window again and wrapped her arms around herself. “I am sorry, for the way I treated you. I should have helped you, I should have made you feel more at home, but I didn’t. And for that I’m sorry.” Her shoulders began to shake a little and I knew she was crying. “Miss Ida, I forgive you.” I said as a tear hit my hand, a bit surprised because I didn’t even know I was crying. Miss Ida turned to look at me, “Thank you.” She wiped the tears off her face. Just then we heard some horses ride up. Miss Ida and I hurried to the door. When Miss Ida opened it there was David and Neil! My heart soared as I looked at him. “Ida, Christy!” David said as he hugged his sister, “I wasn’t sure you’d be alright!” He turned to me and grabbed my arms, “Christy, I can’t believe you ’re here!” Then his expression changed, “What were you thinking going out in this weather?” I took David’s hands off my arms, “I just wanted to get here, to see everyone, and I belong here surely you know that by now.” I said and I looked over at Neil who was warming himself by the fire, “How is Vella? Is she better?” Neil looked tired and I can see that he hadn’t shaved in a while, “Well the Holt’s all had pneumonia.” He sighed and he looked sad, “Vella was the worst, she died before I even got there.” He turned his back to us. I looked over at David, and he shrugged his shoulders. ‘Neil, doesn’t seem to be taking this well. I wish there was something I could do for him.’ “Well there is some hot coffee in the kitchen, David, why don’t we go get some?” Miss Ida said as she grabbed his arm. I turned and looked over at Neil again. He was sitting down on a chair and I could hear him crying softly. I went over to him and sat down. “Are you going to be alright, Neil?” “I don’t understand, Christy. Why would God let a little child like Vella die?” He looked up at me, and the expression on his face made tears come to my eyes. “I don’t know, Neil, I don’t know.” He was quiet for a few seconds before he said, “Margaret and I had wanted children, and we planed and planed then she had the baby and they died. I just don’t understand. Why would God let a little child die?” ‘So that was it!’ I thought, ‘he’s really upset about his baby. I guess everyone who dies reminds him of them.’ I reached over and grabbed Neil’s hands. “I wish I could help you Neil, but I don’t know how I could.” His sad hazel eyes looked up at me, “Christy, you’ve helped me more then you realize.” I smiled at him, “I am here for you Neil. I want you to know that.” I stood up and went up to my room to pray for him. Thankful that there was a fireplace in my room to keep me warm. When I came down to help Miss Ida with supper later that day I didn’t see David or Neil. Miss Ida must have known what I was thinking, “David and Neil went to the bunkhouse to rest. Here,” she said handing me potatoes, “will you peal these?” I grimaced, ‘I hate pealing potatoes!’ I looked at Miss Ida, and something hit me, ‘I doubt she likes it very much either.’ “Sure!” I said. “I don’t like pealing potatoes very much, but if you don’t want to...” “No Miss Ida,” I interrupted, “You always peal the potatoes so I won’t mind doing it this time.” I smiled as I leaned closer to her, “I really don’t like doing it either, but they are worth it. I really like your mashed potatoes.” She smiled at me, “Thank you.” Then she turned to check on the roast in the oven, as I set out to pealing the potatoes. ‘Miss Ida sure has changed, I wonder what happened…’ When I was setting the table for dinner, sure enough in walked David and Neil. I could see they shaved and cleaned up. “Did you both get enough rest?” I said as I set the last place. Neil smiled and I knew he looked better. I could see he was about to say something, but David beat him. “Well I feel better rested knowing you both are alright.” He went around me and sat down at the head of the table. I looked at Neil and our eyes locked, and that feeling came over me again and I started to get dizzy. I reached down and grabbed a hold of the back of the chair. Neil was immediately by my side, “Christy, are you feeling alright? Here sit down.” He said as he pulled a chair up for me to sit on. I took a deep breath, “I am fine, thank you. I need to go help Miss Ida now, will you please excuse me?” Neil’s concerned eyes looked into mine, as I turned on my heel and left the room. ‘What was I suppose to tell him?’ I asked myself, ‘No doctor I’m not all right. I am madly in love with you and every time you’re near me I feel lightheaded!’ I shook my head as I went into the kitchen to help Miss Ida. Christy will live in the hearts and minds of fans forever. We had dinner and I was sitting across from Neil and next to Miss Ida and David. I tried not to look at Neil, but it was very hard not to. I looked over at David and I was going to say something, but I couldn’t. I turned away and blushed, and when I looked up I looked right into Neil’s eyes the very thing I was trying to avoid. I seen something in his eyes, but before I could figure it out it was gone. “Christy, will you please pass the potatoes?” Miss Ida interrupted my thoughts. I looked over at her and smiled, “Sure.” and I passed them to her. “Is it just me or did something change between you two?” David said as he looked at me. I couldn’t answer. I didn’t know how too. I looked back at Miss Ida. “Let’s just say that I learned a lot when you were away, David. Now if you’ ll excuse me I will bring in dessert.” Miss Ida pushed out her chair and left the room. I looked down at my plate aware that Neil’s eyes had been on me since dinner began. I took a deep breath, looked at him and as I opened my mouth to speak, I found I couldn’t. His hazel eyes seem to dance as he looked at me, and I felt lightheaded again. I heard David say something, but I didn’t know what. “Christy? Did you hear what I said?” “Humm?” I said as I turned away from Neil. “No I didn’t David, I’m sorry.” I blushed under David’s accusing gaze. Just then Miss Ida returned and I was glad for the interruption. After dinner I was sitting by the fire and just watching it thinking about Neil, ‘God how am I ever going to tell him? How is this all going to work out? And what about David? I don’t want to hurt him…’ “What is in that fire that you find so interesting, Miss Huddleston?” Neil said as he sat down next to me. I didn’t look at him, “Nothing really.” I said as I blushed. “Nothing, huh? Well you’ve been staring into it for quite a while.” Neil said jokingly then he turned serious, “Christy, is something wrong? You haven’t been yourself lately.” I didn’t dare look at him, “I’m fine Neil. I guess I am missing home more then I thought I would.” Before he could say anything I added, “I am rather tired, and I think I will get to bed.” I got up and Neil quickly stood, “Are you sure you’re alright? You don’t…” “I’m fine, Neil!” I said a bit to harshly. “I just wish…” But I didn’t say anymore I hurried up to my room where there wasn’t concerned hazel eyes watching me. Neil went home that night and I was both happy and sad about it. David caught me alone the next day. “Christy? Can I talk with you a moment?” David said. “Yes, I guess so.” I sighed. David looked at me strangely, “How about we sit over here?” He said indicating a chair by the fire. The very one Neil had sit in the other day. I sat down thinking about the way Neil had looked at me, and his eyes… “Christy, I was wondering how you felt about the proposal?” My head shot up and I looked at him openmouthed. ‘Oh no! Not now, David, not now. How will I explain this?’ “Christy, are you alright? You have been acting very strangely lately.” I composed myself, “Yes, David I’m fine. I was just surprised that you’d bring this up. I haven’t really thought about it…” “Christy, you must have. Can you honestly say that you’ve been a way for all this time and you didn’t think about it?” David looked so earnestly at me I wanted to cry. “David,” I took a deep breath and plunged in, “I’m not in love with you, and I am so sorry…” Tears ran down my face as I jumped up and ran up to my room, which I had been doing very often lately. There was a knock on my door not long afterwards. “Christy? It’s me Ida. Can I come in?” I just cried all the more. ‘I hope she isn’t going to lector me.’ I thought as the door squeaked open. Miss Ida came and sat down beside me on the bed. “Christy, I came up here to speak for David. He wants to make sure you’re all right. He wants you to know he has been doing a lot of praying lately and he feels like God is telling him to let you go.” I looked up at her, “Really?” “Yes, and I want you to know that I just found out about it myself. I am sorry if I came between you and David.” I wiped the tears off my cheeks, “No, Miss Ida. It wasn’t you. It was me all along. I lead him to believe I loved him and I thought I did, but I found out I really didn’t, and I didn’t know what to do.” Miss Ida reached over and wrapped her arms around me, “It’s all right Christy, it’s all right.” After a while I calmed down, and Miss Ida left. I splashed some water on my face, and left my room. As I was going downstairs Miss Alice came in the door, I ran down the rest of the stairs and went to her. “Oh Miss Alice!” I said hugging her, “I’m so glad you’re here!” “Christy! I didn’t know thee was here!” We pulled away, “Are thee okay? Thee looks like thee has been crying.” “Oh Miss Alice. I have, but everything is okay now! I know now.” “Know what, dear?” she said as she removed her hat. “I just know.” I said smiling. Miss Alice looked at me, “Yes, I think thee does.” She smiled, “Shall we go into the dinning room? I do believe I smell Miss Ida’s cooking.” “Yes,” and when we walked into the dinning room my heart stopped there sat Neil at the table. Christy will live in the hearts and minds of fans forever. I sucked in my breath and Neil looked at me, ‘Oh God give me strength’ I prayed. “Hello everyone!” I smiled. “Well you look much better.” Neil said, “I guess all you needed was some rest.” I avoided David’s eyes, and looked at Miss Ida instead. “Mummm… sure smells good.” I went over to the empty seat next to her and sat down. Glad that neither David nor Neil sat next to it. Miss Alice came and sat next to me. “Before we began,” Neil’s Scottish brogue said, “I would like to announce that Ruby Mae and Will Beck are expecting their first child.” “Well isn’t that wonderful news!” Miss Alice said. “Oh! I have to go see her!” I said getting up. “Oh no you don’t, it’s to cold out there. Now sit down and let’s eat. You can see Ruby Mae tomorrow.” Neil said. I was very surprised, and I was about to object, but David said, “Neil is right Christy. Now sit back down. You can see her tomorrow. I can take you if you want.” I sat back down, “Alright I will see her tomorrow.” David seemed satisfied with that and began praying, “Father, we thank you for this wonderful food that has been set before us…” After the meal was over I helped Miss Ida with the dishes. While I was doing so I heard Neil asking David if he could use the phone. ‘Why would Neil need to use the phone?’ I wondered. I heard Neil dialing out and I was about to move closer to hear what he was saying when Miss Ida came over, “Christy, do you think that Zadie would like this?” I turned to her and she was standing next to a chest. “What is it?” My mind was still preoccupied on Neil using the phone. “Well it’s an old chest of mine, and I don’t think I will be needing it so I thought maybe Zadie would like it for her Hope Chest. What do you think?” The look on her face bewildered me, “Why I suppose any girl in the Cove would like it. They all can’t wait to grow up and marry.” Miss Ida smiled, “Good. I want to give it to her, but I don’t know if she will accept it. How do you do it?” “Well I have them work for it or they earn it by doing well with their schoolwork.” “Ummm… I guess I will have to think about it. Thank you.” Then Miss Ida left the room. ‘I wonder what that was all about?’ I turned back to the door just in time to hear Neil say, “Thank you sir. Good-bye.” ‘I missed it! Oh well I suppose I will find out if he wants me to.’ The next day I was getting ready to go visit Ruby Mae, when David came up to me. “Christy, you aren’t going by yourself are you?” Before I could answer he said, “I know it is awkward between us right now, and I am sorry, but you need someone to go with you.” “I will take her.” I turned around to see Neil standing in the doorway, “I need to check on Ruby Mae anyways.” I turned to look at David, “Alright.” He sighed and then turned and left the room. I turned back towards Neil “I need to talk to Miss Alice a minute. I shouldn’t be long. Will you wait for me?”* his eyes twinkled. “Yes, I will, but please hurry.”* “I will try.” He said and then hesitantly added, “Remember God has a perfect timing for everything.” Then Neil he turned and left the room. I had the funniest feeling we weren’t talking about the same thing. I didn’t have to wait long before he came back out all smiles. “What are you smiling about?” “Can’t a doctor smile? Now come on let’s get going.” When we went out to the barn Neil said, “It would be easier if we just took one horse. Since they don’t have a barn and we may be there a while. The horse would have to stand out in this, and…” “I don’t mind.” At Neil’s look, “Well are we going or not? It’s cold out here!” “Yes, you first.” I mounted up and he followed, “Make sure you hold on tight to that saddle horn.” “Believe me I will.” I said glad that he couldn’t see my face. Neil reached around and covered my hands with his as we set out. “I am enjoying this too much!’ I thought grinning from ear to ear. We reached Ruby Mae’s way to soon and we hurried inside where it was warm. Ruby Mae and Will were very excited about their baby and I knew they were very happy. Even though I was against them getting married at first I could see now they did the right thing, and I was happy for them. Neil examined Ruby Mae, and I couldn’t help but wonder how Neil felt each time he had to deliver a baby or deal with that. ‘It probably hurts him to know that he didn’t even get to know his child. I wonder how he deals with it?’ “Well,” Neil said as he entered the room. “She’s fine, and so is the baby. She is due in around 7 months or so.” “7 months!” I looked over at Ruby Mae and Will, “Just think, you’ll both be parents soon!” I gave them both a hug. “Congratulations!” “Well Christy,” Neil said after putting his coat on, “We probably should get going. It looks like it’s going to snow again.” He grabbed my coat and helped me get it on. I was very aware that he was so close and I could help but remember his smiling face this morning. ‘I wonder if it had anything to do with the phone call he made last night?’ We said our good-byes and left. When we went outside I could see why Neill seemed so concerned, it sure did look like it was going to snow again. I sighed. Part/Chapter: 9 Summary: 1) From the ending of the Christy book. Christy will live in the hearts and minds of fans forever. We got back at the mission just in time. The snow started falling half way home, but when we got there it was got worse. “Looks like a blizzard.” I said as Neil opened the door for me to the mission. “Aye. Looks like I will have to sleep here again.” Neil said taking off his coat and heading over to the fire. My heart leapt for joy, and I smiled. “I guess you will.” I said as I followed him. “I am glad thee made it back in time.” Miss Alice said, “How is Ruby Mae doing?” “Ruby Mae is doing fine. She is due around August.” Neil said as we stood close to the fire. I stood there warming myself not only by the fire, but mainly cause Neil was so close to me. I could smell the carbolic soap he used to wash his hands. I closed my eyes and took a deep breath. ‘I love that smell.’ And my mind drifted off thinking about Neil. “Christy?” I opened my eyes to see Neil looking at me. “Miss Alice was asking you a question.” His eyes twinkled and I wondered how long he had been watching me. I turned to her, “I am sorry, Miss Alice, my mind was elsewhere. What did you say?” She looked at me with a concerned look, and then looked over at Neil, and then back at me, “I was wondering what thee thought of Neil’s idea.” I looked at Neil and he was smiling at the fire, “What idea? I never heard of any idea.” I asked confused. “Christy where have thee been? Neil just said it a few moments ago, and thee were standing right there.” “I am sorry. I wasn’t listening.” I looked over at Neil, “So what’s your idea?” I said sitting down. He turned towards me, “Well I thought it might be a good idea not only for me, but for the mission, that we could start a clinic right here.” At my confused look he added, “Well not here in the mission, but I mean build a building around here. That way people can come here, and I don’t have to go all over the mountain. Also people can find me quicker in case of an emergency.” My eyes brightened at the idea. ‘He must have read my mind! I thought of that a long time ago! “I think that’s a wonderful idea! We need to get beds, sheets….” “Whoa! Hold on a minute, Christy.” Neil interrupted holding up a hand in defense, “It is still winter, and it’s just an idea…” “Yes, but it’s a wonderful idea. I had thought of it a while ago, but” I sheepishly added, “I didn’t think that you would ever do it.” Neil was watching me as I talked and when I finished he looked back at the fire and poked at a log, “Well you’re probably right, but things have changed…” It was quiet for a few moments as I looked over at Miss Alice, “Well I think thee should pray about it, Neil. Personally I think that it’s a good idea. We also should talk to Dr. Ferrand.” Miss Alice got up, “Well I need to get back to my cabin. I leave tomorrow morning for Cataleechie.” We said our good-byes and she left. I sat back down by Neil watching as he was still staring into the fire with a faraway look on his face. ‘I wonder what he’s thinking?’ I didn’t have to wait long to find out. “Christy?” Neil said still looking into the fire. “Yes, Neil.” “I talked to your father last night on the phone.” My eyebrows shot up. ‘So that’s who he was talking with!’ “When they were here before you left I talked to him about some things. I asked him to pray about it, and he did. He called asking for me a few days ago, but I wasn’t here. And well I called him back last night. He had an answer for me, and I am very happy about it.” He smiled. “Yes?” I said when he stopped talking for a few minutes. Waiting for him to go on. He looked up at me; “When you went home something changed in you.” He said as he moved closer to me, “Before I say anymore, I need to ask.” A pained expression crossed his face, “I need to know if you are in love with David.” He said looking into my eyes. I was shocked, because it was the last thing in the world I though Neil would dare to talk about. I felt the heat creep up in my face, and I knew if I didn’t control myself I would mess everything up. ‘Oh God, help me say the right thing.’ I took a deep breath, “At one time I thought I was in love with David I have to admit.” I seen the pain on Neil’s face, “But I found out I don’t love him like that.” I quickly added. Neil looked up at me with joy on his face, “You don’t?” “No.” I smiled. He ran his finger through his hair and squeezed the ends of them. A habit I found very attractive. He got up out of his chair and walked around it. Then he looked at me, “Are you sure?” he asked. “Yes, of course I am sure. God showed me the truth, and I couldn’t be happier.” I smiled at him. Just then David walked in. “Ida wanted me to tell you both that dinner is ready. Where is Miss Alice?” David said looking around the room. We both sighed, “She went home, she has to leave tomorrow morning for Cataleechie.” I said. “Alright. Let’s go eat then.” David said waiting for us to move. I took the first step giving Neil an apologetic look. We went in and David sat at the head of the table, ‘I don’t like it when he sits there. Isn’t there something in the Bible that says we should take the lower place?’ I sighed, ‘Oh well.’ I sat down and Neil sat between David and me. I looked across the table at Miss Ida and she smiled knowing full well what was going on. Part/Chapter: 10 Summary: 1) From the ending of the Christy book. Christy was ill and Neil prayed for her. Christy will live in the hearts and minds of fans forever. After dinner David took Neil right over to the bunkhouse. He said he needed to talk to him. I watched Neil’s back until it disappeared from my view in the storm. ‘I was hoping to find out what he was going to tell me. Now I won ’t know until tomorrow.’ I sighed and left to window to go help Miss Ida with the dishes. The snow had stopped early the next morning. When David and Neil came in for breakfast I was so happy to see him! ‘I am glad no one needed help last night.’ I looked at him and smiled. His eyes twinkled back. During breakfast David announced, “I am going over to see Jeb this morning.” Miss Ida’s head popped up, “I need to talk over a few things with him. See how he’s doing and everything.” “I would like to go if I could.” Miss Ida said softly. All eyes turned to her. “Well without a woman around I am sure the house needs cleaned, and I can help the girls. That is if that’s okay with you.” She said looking at David. “Yah, that’s fine. You better bundle up though it’s cold out there.” It was quiet through the rest of breakfast, and I couldn’t help but wonder if Miss Ida wasn’t sweet on Jeb! As I thought about it, ‘no that couldn’t be.’ After breakfast Miss Ida turned to me, “Oh I am sorry, Christy! I forgot about the dishes.” “That’s okay. I can do them by myself. You just go along.” At Miss Ida’s look I said, “I can do it don’t worry.” She smiled, “Thanks!” She said as she hurried to her room. I grabbed some dishes and headed into the kitchen. I was surprised when I seen Neil with a towel over his shoulder stacking dishes, “Neil, what are you doing?” I asked. He turned towards me, “Well I was going to help you do the dishes. What does it look like?” He smiled. “You don’t have to do that.” I said walking over towards him with some more of the dishes. “I know,” he said lowering his voice, “but it’s quiet in here, and we need to talk. Besides I don’t mind doing the dishes as long as you wash.” Neil said as he took the dishes from my hands. “Of course.” I said as we set out to work. We had been doing the dishes for a few minutes, and I was wondering when Neil was going to say anything or if he was. “Christy, yesterday I told you I talked to your father about some things. Well,” he stopped and looked at me, “one of those things was you.” I didn’t look at him, but I started scrubbing the plates. “Christy?” When I didn’t look at him he reached over and touched my face. I blushed and I finally stopped at what I was doing and looked at him. “I want you to know that I asked him for your hand in marriage.” My lips started trembling and tears ran down my face. Neil reached over and wiped them off, “I had him pray about it, and he finally gave me permission. So I am asking you, Christy, will you marry me?” He never looked so serious in his life. As he looked at me, I knew he loved me, because it was written all over his face. “Yes.” I whispered as I smiled. He looked at me in disbelief, “Really?!” “Yes!” I said. He smiled and leaned down and kissed me on the lips, it was such a sweet tender kiss and it made me feel lightheaded. The kiss ended all to soon, and when he let go of me I almost fell over. “Are you alright?” Neil said. I looked at him and smiled, “It’s nothing another kiss can’t cure.” He grinned as he leaned down to kiss me again the door squeaked open. “Ahem.” We both turned to see David standing there heat rushed up my face. ‘I hope he’s not mad.’ “Am I interrupting something?” he said as he looked back and forth between Neil and me, smiling. ‘Is David really smiling? God must have really changed him!’ Neil looked at him and said, “Not at all, David.” Then he turned back to me and kissed me! I was shocked, but I loved every minute of it. When we pulled away I was glad that Neil still had his arm around me. “Well,” David said, “Miss Ida and I were leaving and I thought it would be best if you leave Neil. I mean,” he quickly added, “it wouldn’t look good…” “Yes, I quite understand David. I planed on going back to my cabin. I got a lot of stuff to do. However Christy will be here alone and I don’t…” “Oh you don’t have to worry about that, Opal has been wanting to talk with her so we can drop her off there on our way to the Spencer’s.” David said. “That is if it’s all right?” I didn’t know whom he was talking to Neil or me, I looked at Neil and he didn’t seem to have a problem with it, “Yes, that will be fine David. Can you give me a minute?” At David’s nod I hurried to my room to get ready thinking about what just happened all the way. ‘I wish we were married right now,’ I smiled, ‘then I could be with him…’ When we got to Opal’s she opened the door and rushed out. “Christy! I have been missin’ ya sumthin’ fierce!” she hugged me. “Cum on and let’s git out of this cold.” We hurried inside, and to my surprise the house was very clean. “Your house looks nice Opal.” “Well thank you Miz Christy. I have been cleanin’ and cleanin’, because,” she looked at me and smiled and then frowned. “I hope this doesn’t make you feel uncomfortable none. But Birds Eye has asked me to marry him, and I thought about it and thought about it…” I looked at her astonished that Opal could even think of getting married again so soon. ‘Tom didn’t die that long ago, and here she was thinking about getting married again. I could never do that with Neil…’ “You don’t hate me do ya Miz Christy? I haven’t given him my answer yet.” When I didn’t say anything she went on, “It’s hard to keep a house up with youngin’s under foot and…” she looked at me with sad eyes, “It’s been hard.” “I know Opal. I don’t hate you. I was just surprised.” I pulled her over and held her and she just cried. “Go ahead, Opal, let it all out.” Part/Chapter: 11 Summary: 1) From the ending of the Christy book. Christy will live in the hearts and minds of fans forever. After Opal had a good cry she told me that she missed Tom, and she would feel bad if she married Birds Eye. “Oh Miz Christy, I don’t know what to do. I loved Tom, but he ain’t here no more, and I need someone, and Birds Eye has been so nice. Did I tell you he got saved?” Her eyes brightened, and I shook my head, “Oh Miz Christy I was just happy to see him in church, but when he got saved that was sumthin’ to behold!” “Well I feel better knowing he was saved.” I said. “I can’t be believin’ that no one told ya.” I shook my head in bewilderment, “Not even the Preacher?” I shook my head again. “They must have forgotten with everything going on. Did you hear that Ruby Mae and Will Beck are expecting?” “Oh Lordy, Miz Christy that be old news!” Opal smiled at me. I chuckled. “Yes, I guess it is.” “Now,” Opal said as she grinned, “Why don’t you tell me why you look so happy?” I looked at her, “Oh I would love to, but I haven’t told anyone yet.” She looked at me and said, “Can I guess then?” I just smiled. “Does it have anything to do with the Doc?” Opal said. I looked at her in disbelief, “Fairlight said before she passed on the she thought you and the Doc made a mighty fine couple.” Opal smiled at me and I blushed. ‘Fairlight knew all along who I was going to marry. I miss her so much.’ Tears sprang to my eyes. “Don’t you worry none, your secret is safe with me. Now I knowed you be leavin’ soon to go back to the mission house, but can you help me clean this here corner?” “Of course I’ll help.” I paused for a few moments and then added, “Thank you, Opal for being my friend.” I said as I gave her a hug and then tackled the cobwebs in the corner. David came and picked me up just as we finished cleaning the corner. I hurried up and got ready to go and before I left the house I looked back at Opal, “I think that Tom would be happy for you Opal, and I know that Birds Eye is a good man.” I quickly gave her a hug and left. All the way home Miss Ida seemed to be acting stranger then normal. ‘I wonder what happened? She looks like she has a secret. Ahh, I wish I knew what it was! Could she be??? Nah.’ The rest of the day went really well, except the fact Miss Ida was so happy I didn’t know what to think. ‘Maybe she’s gotten into the Moonshine?’ I chuckled at the image. I talked to my father that night on the phone just to make sure everything was fine, but I didn’t tell him that I was engaged I wanted Neil and I to do it together. The next day the sun started shining and the snow was melting. ‘Finally!’ I thought looking out the window. ‘I am glad because I want to get married soon, and I don’t want snow to be anywhere in sight!’ “Humm…” I closed my eyes. “Now isn’t this a sight to behold!” I turned to see Neil standing there. I suddenly got shy and blushed, ‘Why do I always act so foolish when Neil’s around?’ “Hello, Neil.” I smiled. “What were you thinking about?” Neil said his smile getting wider. “Humm?” I looked at him, “Take a guess.” He smiled and took me into his arms and kissed me, “Was it that?” he said when we pulled away. “Well not exactly, but close.” I said. “Humm??? What could it be?” He looked like he was concentrating real hard and his facial expression was so funny I burst out laughing. “What? What’s so funny?” “You!” I said. “Now whatever did I do?” He said looking at me so earnestly that I stopped laughing. He smiled and pulled me into his arms again. “Was it our wedding that you were thinking of?” He whispered against my ear. “Yes, of course, and you, oh and snow.” I said chuckling. “Snow?” Neil pulled away. “Yes, snow. I am glad it is melting, because I want to get married soon, and I don’t want snow anywhere in sight!” Neil grinned at me, “I couldn’t agree more. Now shall we set a date and call your parents?” “Yes! What date were you thinking?” I asked sitting down. Neil pulled a chair up beside me, “I was thinking about today.” He grinned. “Neil MacNeill!” I blustered. “I was just joking,” he smiled, “How about in 3 months? Would that be enough time?” “An April wedding? Humm… Well that sounds good to me! Except it seems so far away.” I sighed. “Yes, I know.” Neil said leaning back in his chair, “But when your making all the plans it won’t seem that long at all. So” his brow wrinkled in thought, “how about the 27th?” I looked at him, “I hate odd numbers. How about the 22nd?” “Sounds fine to me, but will you have enough time?” “I will have plenty of time. Now shall we call Daddy?” I smiled. “Aye.” Over the next few days’ people all over the Cove found out about the upcoming wedding and were coming to congratulate us. Opal and Birds Eye came together and they told me they were going to wait until August to get married. I was happy about that. Part/Chapter: 12 Summary: 1) From the ending of the Christy book. Christy will live in the hearts and minds of fans forever. Over the next few months I was getting stuff ready for the wedding set for April 22nd. I was very busy making phone call’s to my mother and other people that I hadn’t paid much attention to Miss Ida until one day… “Christy? I know you’re busy and everything, but can we talk a minute? I have a question to ask you.” Miss Ida blushed. “Why sure, Miss Ida, come in.” She came into my room and sat down beside me on my bed. “I am not sure how to say this, but please don’t get upset with me.” She looked at me pleadingly. “Well I will try not to, but I don’t even know what it is so…” She started crying, “I am in love with Jeb Spencer, and I can’t help it.” I looked at her in astonishment. ‘So I was right all the time!’ Aloud I said, “Well Miss Ida, does he know?” “No, I don’t want to hurt him, because Fairlight just died and, oh! I just don’t know what to do!” she wailed. I smiled, “Miss Ida, just wait on God. He has a perfect timing for everything. I know it’s hard.” “You mean you’re not mad at me?” she said. “No of course not. Everyone needs to get on with life, and I think that since you’ve changed so much you’d be perfect.” Miss Ida started crying again, “That’s just it! I’m not a good person. I was so mean to you when you came and I was mean to Fairlight. I know Jeb has to know about it, so how could I ever get him to like me?” I looked at her, “If it’s God’s will everything will happen right.” “What if it’s not God’s will?” Miss Ida blew her nose. I looked at her, “I don’t know Miss Ida, but right now you just need to pray about it, okay?” She looked at me, “Thank you, Christy. I will do that.” She got up and left the room, and I sighed. Then I quickly prayed for Miss Ida and Jeb before working on more stuff. It was one month until our wedding when Neil cam rushing in the mission. “Listen to this everyone!” He said waving a paper in the air. “Dear Neil, This is to inform you that I have prayed and I believe that it’s God’s will for you to build a building on mission property for your clinic. The mission will not be able to supply the materials needed, but we will help in everyway that we can. I will be up in Cutter Gap in a month for your wedding we can talk the details over then. Yours sincerely, Dr. Ferrand.” Neil looked up from the letter he was reading his eyes were shinning. “That’s wonderful, Neil!” and we all were quite happy about it. To my surprise David even volunteered to help build the building. “There is only one thing.” Miss Alice said, “Thee will need someone to help thee, and I am sorry, but I am unable to help.” Miss Alice had a secret and I didn’t know what it was, but I had a feeling that her not helping had something to do with it. “As you know I have been spending a lot of time in Cataleechie. Well they need someone down there to teach and to doctor, so I will be moving down there.” We all looked at her in shock. “You really don’t need me here, because Christy is here to teach and Neil you’re here to Doctor.” “But Miss Alice I need you here.” I started crying. She pulled me into her arms, “Christy, I will be here until after your wedding, and I will come up often to visit. I will miss thee.” “I will miss you, too!” I said clinging to her. “Thee will be fine. I need to go on with my life, Christy and I believe it’s God’s will for me to go there.” She pulled away from me, “Now if thee will excuse me I need to go.” She turned and left. “Well,” Neil said, “she’s right. I have been thinking about getting another doctor up here to help me, but I didn’t want to worry about it with wedding so close. Besides we don’t even have a building yet.” “Oh let’s not worry about it.” I said, “Everything will be fine, now Neil I need you to...” It was only a few days before my wedding and Miss Ida had been busy helping me get ready and helping Jeb with his children. They had become very attached to her especially the little guy. I had noticed that Jeb seemed to be looking at her differently, and I knew before long they would be courting. Ruby Mae was getting bigger and bigger all the time, and spent most of her time at home. Her pregnancy was going very well, and I was hoping they would have a little girl with red hair. David and I had a talk and everything was settled between us, which I was very grateful. I found out that Neil had talked to him before coming to me and David had prayed about it and he felt it was God. I couldn’t be happier. My parents came up for my wedding along with George and a beautiful girl, named Rose Harding that he was courting! He wanted to surprise me and he did! I really liked her and we had a lot in common. The day had come and people from all over traveled to Cutter Gap for our wedding. It was wonderful, Neil had bought me a simple gold wedding band, and I loved it. David preformed the ceremony. Miss Ida was my maid of honor and Jeb was Neil’s best man. I could see them stealing glances at each other every now and then. When Neil finally kissed me, people stated hooping and hollering, and I couldn’t help but think that I wanted to do that. Part/Chapter: 13 Summary: 1) From the ending of the Christy book. Christy will live in the hearts and minds of fans forever. Over the next feel days I felt like I was floating on air. I was finally Mrs. MacNeill, I wasn’t a spinster anymore! I put my hand on my stomach hoping that there was a little life growing inside of me. I smiled and leaned against my chair. I had began teaching school again a week after Neil and I got married, and I was so happy to be working with the children again. I missed them so much. Neil and David got started with the clinic building and Dr. Ferrand came up with some arrangements. It had been decided that we were going to get another doctor and nurse to help. We already had a doctor; Luke Dean, coming to help but we hadn’t gotten a nurse. ‘I hope we get a nurse soon,’ I thought. ‘I wish Miss Alice…’ The days turned into months and the clinic was finally finished and we had a nurse! I hadn’t met her, but when Neil told me about her… “Her name is Susan Long. She loves God and,” he winked at me, “she’s not married.” “Neil!” I said wondering what he meant by that, then it dawned on me, “She is, huh?” I grinned wickedly. “I would like to meet her soon.” “You will darling, you will.” Neil said. “But first, this husband of yours wants something to eat.” He stomach growled as though making a point. I chuckled, “Okay, I will get it.” When I met Susan several days later, I knew that Neil was right. ‘She’s just the kind of girl for David.’ I grinned. I can’t wait to see his face when he sees her. I didn’t have to wait long, “Excuse me,” David said coming into the classroom where we were, “I seem to have forgotten my notes for…” he stopped when he seen Susan. “This is the new nurse, her name is Susan Long. Susan this is Reverend David Grantland.” Her eyes brightened, “Hello Reverend Grantland.” She said shyly offering her hand. “Hello. I hope you enjoy it here.” He said shaking her hand. They didn’t say anything for a few minutes, but continued to look at each other. “Ahem.” I cleared my throat. David quickly let go of her hand and turned towards me, “You were getting your notes?” I reminded him. “Oh yes. Thank you.” Then turning to Susan, “Will you excuse me? I must finish my sermon.” Then David got his notes and left. I grinned as I looked at Susan’s blushed face, ‘Ah! Love is in the air.’ The clinic started and was a success. At first people were a little timid, but they thought it was a good idea and came. They were still proud and would not except anything they thought was charity. The new doctor and nurse were doing very well, and I heard that David and Susan had been spending time together. I was very glad to hear that. So everything was going well except for a few fights at school everything was going well. Opal and Birds Eye were courting and they made a cute couple. Birds Eye was gentle to the children, except Issak didn’t seem to be to happy about it all, but he seemed to be getting better each day. Jeb had FINALLY asked David if he could court Miss Ida and I don’t think David even had a clue about what was going on! But he let them after much prayer. Then there was Neil and I. Other then a few stupid arguments we were doing pretty good. 3 months after we were married I went to go see Susan… “I think I am pregnant.” I said smiling then added quickly, “But I haven’t told Neil anything yet. I want to make sure.” She smiled and nodded, “Your secrets safe with me.” Then she took me in a room and examined me. After it was all over she just smiled and winked and I knew. I didn’t know how I was going to tell Neil. Because he had already lost one wife and child how would he react to me? I thought about it and thought about it, actually it was more like worry. I talked to my mom and she thought Neil would be just fine with it, but I was still not sure. Then one day… Neil came in exhausted from a days work at the clinic he sat down and was telling me about it. All I could think of was how am I going to tell Neil that we are going to have a baby? Finally Neil stopped talking and looked at me, “What’s wrong?” he asked gathering me into his arms. ‘How can he not know?’ I wondered. ‘I HAVE to tell him.’ My lips trembled and I started to cry. As I turned towards him I said, “Neil I am 4 months pregnant.” I said looking into his hazel eyes. He smiled “You ARE!!!” he picked me up and swung me around then set me back on my feet and kissed me gently on the lips. “I hope it’s a girl who looks just like you.” He whispered in my ear. I sniffled, “I thought you might be… oh I don’t know!” I laughed. “Is that what’s been bothering you all this time?” He said. “Well yes, I didn’t know how to tell you, because of Margaret and…” He put a finger to my lips, “Shush. That’s all over. It won’t happen to you, I won’t let it. There is so much more we can do not that we couldn’t before. Nothing will happen, I promise.” He leaned down and kissed me again. I was glad that everything was okay, again. Everyone in the cove soon found out that I was expecting, and Ruby Mae was so happy, “Then my youngin’ will have someone to play with! Maybe they can even be best friends. Iffen yours is a girl and minin is a boy they can get hitched! Wouldn’t that be right fine, Miz Christy? Then we would be related!” I sighed, ‘Wouldn’t that be nice?’ Part/Chapter: 14 (Last Chapter!) Summary: 1) from the ending of the Christy book. Christy was ill and Neil prayed for her. Christy will live in the hearts and minds of fans forever. Chapter 14 (an even number!) Someone came pounding on the door around 2:00 o’clock in the morning. ‘Doc! Doc! Ruby Mae is having her baby and she wants you and Miz Christy to come! Hurry up doc!!” Will Beck’s voice hollered up at us. “We’re coming!!” I yelled back down, “You better get back to Ruby Mae. Go on!” and Will turned and ran off. Neil and I hurried and got ready and we left the house within minutes. We both rode Charlie over to Ruby Mae’s. We could hear her hollering before we even got there. Neil jumped off the horse and hurried to the house. I tied it up Charlie and followed him. Ruby Mae had a terrible time it seemed to me, and almost made me wish I wasn’t due in a few months. But when it was all over I knew Ruby Mae couldn’t have been happier. “Will you look at her Miz Christy? Ain’t she as pretty as a picture?” She smiled as she showed off her baby. I smiled back, “What are you going to name her?” Ruby Mae looked at Will, he looked over at me, “We decided Miz Christy, that is iffen it be okay with you, that we would name her Christy Ludd after you.” I looked at the both of them unshed tears in my eyes, “Of course you can!” I smiled. Neil grabbed my elbow, “I think we should leave now and let Ruby Mae get some rest. Ruby Mae we will be back later today to check up on you. Right now you need to rest.” Then the day came… I had pains in my back, but I thought nothing of it. I was at home alone resting. ‘Neil should be home soon.’ I thought, but then came Issak running up to the house. “Teacher!” he said. I went to the door and opened it, “Yes Issak what is it?” Issak stopped to catch his breath, “The doc wanted me to come fetch you. He wants you to go to the mission. There has been a lot of stuff going on so he won’t be able to come home for a while and he wants you close by.” “Okay, I will get ready to go. Why don’t you come in?” So Issak and I headed over to the mission, and I tried to cover up the pains in my back, but Issak seen it. “You be okay teacher? You don’t look to good.” “I’m fine.” I said. I was glad when I seen the mission house. We headed inside, and there sat Miss Alice! “Oh Miss Alice! I am so glad you’re here!” I said, embracing her. “Well I am glad too. How are thee doing?” she said as we pulled apart. Just then I had a sharp pain in my abdominal, “Well” I said between gritted teeth, “looks like you got here just in time!” “Go get Neil!” Miss Alice yelled. After what seemed like days of labor I finally had a beautiful baby boy and he looked just like his dad. We named him Neil David MacNeill Jr. after his dad. He was a joy, and we loved him. The days flew by and Opal and Birds Eye were married. David and Susan were engaged, and so were Miss Ida and Jeb. The children were growing up anxious to be on their way. Hazen Smith was true to his word and Lizzette, John, Rob and many of the other children went to college and grew up to be fine children. Some children weren’t so lucky and ended up working in bad places, and I always felt it was partly my fault. Ruby Mae, Miss Ida, Opal and I became good friends. We always seemed to be pregnant right after each other. We spent a lot of time sewing and cleaning up after the children, but we loved ever minute of it. George married Rose Harding not to long after I got married. I loved my new sister and they came to visit often. They also supported the mission. Miss Alice’s cabin burned not to long after I had the baby. She was cooking and forgot about it, and it started a fire. She got out just in time to save her life, but by the time everyone got it out it was to late. David and Susan are happily married and have children. They moved to another part of the Cove to be off to themselves more. So David had his bunkhouse torn down so they could use some of the lumber. This is the end of my story. My question to you is what is, why don’t you tell people your story?* * I would like to hear your story fanfic and otherwise. ;) The End
