Titled: "Butterfly Kisses" Author: Allysen I kept looking at myself in the mirror, and it never got any better, no matter what angle I chose. What was I going to do? I watched myself as I leaned closer to the mirror, opened my eyes wide and then squinted them looking at myself critically. I stepped back and took a good look and then stepped back to the mirror again. "What a dumb thing to do!" I groaned and then stuck out my tongue at my reflection in the glass before me. I stepped away from the dresser and sat on the bed deliberating my predicament. I heard heavy footsteps climbing the stairs outside my bedroom and groaned again. They had called in the magician to do the job they were unable to do. Which meant that Miss Alice, Ruby Mae and David sent for Doctor MacNeill. I should have known that that was what the end result would have been. I knew I had them worried, but I just felt dumb. If only he'd taken several more days to come. I groaned for the 3rd time when Neil MacNeill knocked urgently on the door and I covered my face with my hands as if that would help. "Come on, Christy." Doctor MacNeill called from the other side of the door. "I know you're in there. Let me in." "Go away, Doctor. I'm fine." I called out and under my breath I added. Please, please go away. "Come on, Christy." Neil was persistant. "I'm not leaving until you let me in. You know that." I thought his voice softened into a more gentle tone. "Please, Christy." I stood up reluctantly, wondering how this situation had gotten so out of control. I leaned toward the mirror again and told myself, "You did this yourself, you've no one else to blame." I opened the door reluctantly and saw Neil peering intently at me. I lowered my head so that my hair would hide my face. He pushed the door opened further, stepped in and closed the door firmly behind him. He took my arm and led me to the window where the sun came shining in and warmed my face with it's brillance. He gazed critically at my face as much as I had done earlier. "Well, Lassie," Neil's choked voice sounded as if he was having a hard time holding a laugh inside. "That's the most beautiful shiner I've ever seen. How did you manage that?" I stuck my tongue at him and then regretted my action immediately. "I ran into the door." I retorted and then wished I hadn't said it quite that way. I was sounding like a spoiled child. "What am I going to do?" "Well, there's not much I can do now," he said regretably. "How about a raw piece of meat?" I shook my head. That was NOT an option! "How about some bread soaked in milk?" I raised an eyebrow and gave him that look. "However, I guess I could kiss it and make it better." Did I hear him right? I wondered. I wanted to hear him say it again. "What?" I asked. Neil leaned over me and cupped my chin in his hand. I felt myself flush and I had a hard time bringing my eyes to meet his. "Actions are sometimes better than words in some situation, Lass." I closed my eyes and felt butterfly kisses cover my eyes, my face, my lips... Maybe a black eye wasn't so bad after all. The End!
